Massage School Learning Experience

At the end of our first day of massage school, we all circled up to share our feelings. I got teary eyed and said, "I miss my kids and cannot wait to go home and see them."

The months, weeks and days leading up to this experience had been very stressful for me. I had been a stay-at-home mom for the past fifteen years, with six children ranging in age from two to fifteen. I was embarking on my second career. My husband could not understand my stress and concerns. His constant reassurances that everything would be fine at home for the next five months, and that it was no big deal to undress in front of complete strangers, did not help.

As the first day of school got closer, I was so stressed that I broke out with a huge fever blister, right smack dab in the middle of my bottom lip. It hung around for the first two months of school!

It was amazing for me to realize how many of my ideas about education could be traced back to my elementary school teachers. I was actually remembering educational experiences from over twenty years ago; which fed right into my stress, of course.

Another stress was the unknowns of massage school in general. Would I be the old lady in a class full of young people? Would there be guys I would have to work with?

Did my brain even still function? All of these and many more doubts went through my mind.

The first day of school erased about half of these worries. There were eleven students in my class; all but three attending for the purpose of a second career, like myself. They all seemed harmless enough, including the three guys. What a relief!

Thus we embarked on our five month journey together. I have seen and heard about classes were everyone became instant friends forever. We were all pretty much to busy in our own lives for that to happen.

Massage school definitely has a way of showing you yourself, up close and personal. I had always considered myself to be laid back, nice. This unraveled with the first learning experience; which was just a nice name for a test. It is supposed to help mentally to call it something else. At that point I found out that I was very competitive, and even almost mean about it. Wow! Insight number one.

Another eye opener came a few weeks into school when we were having a communications class. I usually skipped these. In this particular situation we were to partner up with another student, and tell how we felt about each other. My partner told me that when we had begun school she did not like me, but she was beginning to! That hit pretty hard, obviously, since I still remember it.

Number three came in our daily circle when we were given time to share how clinics were going, and how we felt about the work we were doing outside of class. I was so excited to share about my work with the university cross-country team. When the teacher called my name, another student remarked, "What are you going to brag about today?" Boom! Insight number three.

I am glad to say these three and many other experiences did encourage introspection and change, but that did not make them any easier to take at the time. The biggest lesson learned was to be careful about the words coming out of my mouth. This has served me well in my business and my life. This lesson, still with my twelve years later, is the same, with this addition: be kind.

On the last day of massage school we all circled up to share our feelings for the last time. When my turn came I said, "I'm glad this is over, and I can't wait to go home to my children."
Everyone chuckled, but all agreed.

Why Workers Resist E-Learning

With new methods of work having been introduced across companies there is a need to retrain workers in new technologies techniques and understandings. As time is always short and people cannot be taken out of their routine jobs and sent to class to learn the new ways of working, The solution is to learn by remote, or what is known as e-learning.

The Learning Management System (LMS)

In today's virtual era a new approach to up-gradation and training programme has evolved that has been defined as e-Learning. The Learning Management System (LMS) is an e-learning platform, specially created to bring ease a uniformity to the e-learning process.

LMS has been adopted by many companies to ensure that an interactive learning course is furnished to the workers. The workers can use the LMS in their spare time or at more convenient times without disrupting their normal course of work or life.

Resistance to E-learning

However even with all the advantages LMS has not had a great success and workers are not enthusiastic in adopting it.

An ASTD survey, in July of this year, asked trainers who was the most resistance to the introduction of workplace e-learning. The result----------managers (40%), trainers (25%), learners and technical support (both 15%).

The traditional reason is that it is a solitary learning method. While LMS is interactive in the sense that the learner or student can interact with his tutor by mail yet it is too impersonal and lacks the warmth of response from either side. Workers miss out on the liveliness of the classroom or group atmosphere. It tends to be lonesome hence tiring and quickly given up. The level of interest is generally too low given the fact that there is lack of a competitive atmosphere.

Also the advantage of taking an e-learning course when and where you want becomes a disadvantage instead. Workers in fact become stressed when they are forced to ad more into their already hectic schedules. Lack structure and a concrete timetable leads to the feeling of being used, workers are resentful of the intrusion upon their spare 'breathing' time.

Workers resent giving up the 'holiday' conventions, seminars and work shops provided them.
Also the work force is still a mix of generations; older generations are not comfortable with computers or the web and prefer the old system of learning. LMSs can sometimes be too complicated even for the tech savvy new generations.

Solution to Resistance

Every problem has a solution-

For better results and quicker acceptance e-learning should be blended in with traditional forms of learning, creating a hybrid in learning.

Don't be discouraged by the initial resistance try and have meetings and open discussions where workers can discuss there apprehensions and resentments against e-learning.

In the beginning circulate an internal monthly newsletter to highlight usage increases, feature different courses each month, and promote learning groups.

Hold a few work shops and start the e-learning program in a relaxed atmosphere. Encourage worker to ask questions and allow them to settle into e-learning slowly

Most important of all remember----------- Rome was not built in a day.

Don't be discouraged if you encounter initial resistance. Many people who resist you now may be the ones who need e-learning the most. They may very well appreciate the benefits of e-learning once they're comfortable with it.

It is critical to spend time and resources supporting your e-learning program. Promote elearning internally regularly - to get management buy-in and to ensure people are aware of, and use, the online training. Consider Your e-learning vendor should be eager to support you to ensure your success. Don't be shy about asking for and using this support - whether it's online resources, telephone support, or just regular contact with the company's sales representative.

Try to find internal champions to help you get the word out about e-learning. If you have a limited budget for promoting the solution, start small by demonstrating e-learning to smaller groups. Never underestimate the power of word of mouth in government agencies.

Garner support from individual supervisors or managers. Remember that support at the manager level is critical to success of any organizational change.

Learning Forgiveness

". . .Father, forgive them. . ." Luke 23:34

When we know the cross, we know forgiveness.

From that holy Body flows the blood which cleanses from all sin.

Just as Jesus looked upon the fellow to His right and then the other to His left, forgiving them, so Jesus looks upon our repentant hearts. He forgives us of our wrongs. We have all broken God's laws. There is none of us righteous, except Jesus the One born without sin.

Therefore, this sinless sacrifice has the credentials by which to forgive us of our wrongs. Only He has the wherewithal to do that; no other religious leader in history can perform that miracle upon the soul. Jesus only.

Consequently, because we know of forgiving grace through Jesus' mercy, we likewise can climb upon our cross by which to forgive those who have wronged us. In ourselves we do not have the equipment to show mercy. We are basically too selfish for all that.

Yet when Jesus' mercy is poured out upon our souls when we don't deserve it at all, then we are modeled by Him in how to forgive. He has already displayed for us the act. Therefore, follow this Jesus--which is what He has called you to do once you pick up His cross--into forgiving hearts.

There are persons who have been mean to you. They have lied about you. They have tried to cripple you when you did nothing to deserve it. They laid traps for you. They told friends things about you that were never factual.

And now those people go on their merry ways with you hunkering in the dust.

What are you going to do about all that injustice? You are going with Jesus into forgiveness. It will be painful. It will be hard. It will cause you to flinch. Yet you know that your forgiving another is your own healing just as it was the healing upon the body of Jesus.
"By His stripes we are healed."


And by His stripes He provides us with forgiving grace by which to look upon our enemies with prayer.

That in turn blossoms health within our own hearts.

To refuse the forgiving grace is to fester our own spirits. Eventually, we will die from such boils upon the soul. We are going to disease our inner parts if we continue with our grudges and seeking vengeance upon those who have wronged us.

But when we follow Jesus to the cross, entering into His provision of mercy, we then realize that it is a double blessing. We forgive and in that we are healed. We extend grace and in that we are lightened of our burden.

Is not Jesus kind in inviting us to forgive others as we have been forgiven. "Forgives us as we forgive those who have trespassed against us." Yes, it is basic, as fundamental as what we term "The Lord's Prayer."

So it is that we piously pray that prayer over and over again, alone and in the company of Christians; yet it is whether we live it out or not that determines our sincerity.
