GPS Maps - How Important Are They?

By Korbin Newlyn

Many people have heard about a GPS map but not many people realize what they are or how they work. Most of the time, only people who have traveled extensively such as pilots, navigators, sailors and similar people would be most acquainted with GPS maps because this kind of new technology is very essential in regards to charter courses when you travel.

However, the military, researchers and various other people who would have the need or desire to be aware of their exact locations at any given time are also utilizing this kind of technology.
On the other hand, for the majority of ordinary people who would not want or need to know about any systems or maps that could let them know exactly where they are at any given point in time, GPS maps are not as well known.

Exactly what is a GPS Map?
GPS is an acronym that stands for Global Positioning System, this system is a global radio navigation system that is comprised from the interaction of 24 satellites orbiting the Earth, along with their corresponding ground stations. In the distant past, navigators and sailors would depend on the stars to point them on their way to their destinations. Fast forward to the present, through the use of modern technology of a GPS map, travelers such as sailors, pilots and those who travel by land no longer have to use the stars to guide them.

A GPS positioning system utilizes the orbiting satellites as reference points in determining the distance from one point to another and to find certain objects on the planet. With the use of satellite data, it would be fairly easy to calculate the distance of a certain place to another place.

The technology has become so advanced and precise that it can calculate your position exactly down to the centimeter. For instance, if you are using a GPS device to find a certain area anywhere on the globe, it can pinpoint precisely where that area is and what the distances is from where you are standing. The exact nature of the technology within GPS systems is such that when we refer to a GPS map, we can rest assured that the information we can find within these GPS maps are easy to follow and accurate. Everyday uses for GPS Maps

The GPS map has too many uses in our current society. For one thing, the police department can help fight crime by using a GPS map; by installing a GPS vehicle navigation system in police cars, the police officer can easily respond to alerts in the city. GPS maps give police and other government services the ability to find a way around the city just as if they know every corner and every street by memory alone.

Because the technology has progressed to the point where it can find a location down to just a few feet it has been utilized extensively by the military as well. When you see the documentaries on TV showing a "smart bomb" strike a target with pinpoint accuracy what you are seeing is GPS technology in action. What they do is incorporate an on board GPS navigation system into the missile to guide it to its target.

GPS - What It Is and How It Works

By Michael Russell

A GPS unit can be purchased in stores for anywhere between $100-$1000 dollars and allows a user to know their location anywhere in the world. Unlike the GPS receiver the actual global positioning system is composed of approximately 30 satellites, which orbit the earth.
Furthermore, at any time of the day, anywhere in the world, there must be at least 3 GPS satellites visible for a receiver (unit) to function properly. By using radio frequencies to contact the GPS network of satellites a receiver can pin-point a users location via a process called three dimensional trilateration.

Originally the GPS system was developed by the United States Department of Defense, as a new means of tracking navigation. Ironically, GPS is free for civilians; anyone can pick up a unit at a local store and begin to know his or her location immediately. In fact GPS has become so popular as a means to aiding navigation that map makers, surveyors, businesses and scientists use it as part of everyday operations. A very useful feature of GPS is that it provides a precise time stamp allowing users to make calculations of their velocities as well as track their changes in locations.

There are minor errors with GPS; in fact certain problems can occur if a user is next to large objects such as buildings, canyons, tunnels, etc. The cause being that radio waves bounce off of large objects, giving the impression that key satellites are father away than in reality. Originally users in large cities with skyscrapers experienced these problems rather frequently. In order to solve these problems differential GPS (DGPS) was developed as a means of providing more accurate information. By sending out more frequencies, DGPS receivers could receive more accurate information instantly resulting in fewer errors and transmission problems. In addition, DGPS units could reports latitudes, longitudes and altitudes of current locations and included this data into maps, which were stored within the unit. Currently, you can use maps stored in a DGPS unit, you can download new maps, or connect your unit to a computer to allow you to find your way more accurately.

The newest GPS receivers typically have the following features; display how far you have traveled, how long you’ve been traveling, current speed, average speed, a trail showing you where on the map you have traveled and can even display estimated times of arrival given current speeds. The technology has grown so much that many consumer products have been fitted with GPS units. New cell phones, cars, rentals, boats and government vehicles have been fitted with positioning units; making travel safer and more reliable. In addition GPS is believed to have contributed to lower crime rates and in certain countries greater compliance with speed limits.

Currently, according to the retailer Amazon.com, the top vehicle GPS units are: the Garmin Nuvi, Street pilot, Pocket Navigator, TomTom One and Magellan Maestro. On the other hand, for handheld units the most popular are: Garmin Forerunner, Lowrance iWay, Via Michelin and the Magellan Explorist. If you’re interested in purchasing a unit, be sure to check consumer reports to determine the right GPS unit for your needs.

Soundproof Insulation - For Your Peace Of Mind

By David Faulkner

You long to live the quiet life. But the biggest obstacle to achieving your dream is, ironically, you own home. Whether it’s surrounded by noisy neighbors and street traffic, or is itself the source of your noise problem with knocking pipes and thin interior walls, your escape from the madding crowds is not performing as you would like. And you’d like a solution, preferably as soon as possible.

One of the easiest ways to make your home more appealing is by adding soundproof insulation. Soundproof insulation will not only provide you with the restful, welcoming haven that you’ve always imagined a home should be; it will increase your property value. And the chances are good that it will the home life of everyone in your family. Why?

A Happy Family
Soundproof insulation will drastically reduce the friction between the adults annoyed by loud music being played and the teenagers who are playing it. Soundproofing insulation will keep private conversations from being overheard when curious ears are listening. Soundproofing insulation will let other family members sleep in when someone has to set his sort her alarm for an early morning awakening, shower, and exit. Soundproof insulation, in other words, will make the close quarters of your home just a little less intimate.

One of the overlooked benefits of soundproof insulation is that it will add to your home’s energy efficiency. Soundproof insulation is, in most cases, acoustic foam injected into your home’s walls through opening in the attic. By expanding to fill every gap in the wall, like those around electrical outlets, it will both provide an extremely tight barrier against heat loss in the winter, and keep warm air out in the summer. You can expect your soundproof insulating to pay for itself eventually in the savings on your home’s energy costs.

If You’re Building A Home
If you’re planning a new home, you can safe yourself from unwanted noise by having soundproof insulation installed at the construction stage. You’ll have to wait until all the plumbing and electrical wiring is complete; then fiberglass batting will be fitted on the walls. The quality of the soundproofing will depend on the thickness of the insulation used.

Soundproofing is also available in pre-made wall coverings which are more expensive than soundproof insulation, and not as effective at lowering energy costs. If you are interested in soundproof insulation for your existing or future home, your best bet is to contact a soundproof insulation contractor who can determine the best solution for your needs.

Steam Model Trains - A Blast From The Past

By David Faulkner

Trains were the first viable form of transport to hit America, especially after the Civil War. Few people today actually know about their roots and do not much care, apart from railroad model enthusiasts that is. They are fully aware of the significance of steam trains and that is why many of them today have steam model trains. The steam train enabled man to travel across America and allowed goods and services to find their way to the west coast. They were only available in the east up until that point. Steam trains were powered by coal. The burning coal produced steam, which was then converted into kinetic energy to propel the train forward. Steam model trains paid homage to these earlier marvels of technology.

It was only after the Second World War that they were actually replaced by the electric powered trains that we have today. One of the major reasons that steam locomotives were popularly replaced by electricity is that they were much slower and less efficient so ticket fares were much higher than they were after electricity trains took centre stage. Steam locomotives were completely gone by the 1970s and were sorely missed. They soon had a nostalgic following that demanded their return. As a result, the steam model trains were perfect to appease those enthusiasts with because they could still get a taste of the past, but in the comfort of their own homes!

There are many manufacturers that offer replicas of steam model trains now because they are proving to be so popular at the moment. Most model railroad enthusiasts will have at least one in their collection to remember the days gone by fondly. They are classic in every way and look extremely stylish. Steam model trains can really enhance your model railroad experience and it is a small price to pay to get hold of one for your collection. There is a real market for the steam model train. They are much sought after by collectors and individuals will often fight over limited edition ones.

You can get hold of a steam model train as part of a set or starter kit but these are much more expensive that regular starter kits. They will cost you no matter how you buy them though so if you are a beginner it would probably be better to purchase one in this form than on its own.

Steam model train enthusiasts are spread out all over the globe and will wax lyrical about them. They do have a little something that other model trains lack. Every collector should have a steam model train, if only to remember the past and how technology has advanced transport in recent years. Once you set your steam model train in motion though, you will realise just how addictive they are!

Women Mountain Biking - Looking Beyond The Risks

By David Faulkner

The old saw about women being the weaker sex has, in recent decade, come up for debate as increasing numbers of women have begun to excel at many of the sports which were once considered the exclusive provinces of men. Women have even begun to compete in extreme sports, including mountain biking.

There is no anatomical reason why women mountain biking cannot manage the strong pedaling required, and enough of them have now taken up the sport that they are no longer a rarity on the mountain biking trails. But mountain biking, like any sport, can cause long-term health consequences in its participants.

There us a question of whether or not women mountain biking are endangering their reproductive systems. Research has indicated that male mountain bikers significantly increase their risk of scrotal damage overtime; there is good reason to think the women might also be at reproductive risk.

The Risks Of Women Mountain Biking

The studies done on men show that they may experience the growth of either benign or malignant scrotal masses as a result of mountain biking, and those results may imply that women mountain biking can develop assorted reproductive illness. One proven effect of women mountain biking is, in a few instances, hymenal rupture.

Even though there many be negative consequences for their reproductive systems, enormous and increasing number of women mountain biking today is a sign that most women think the benefits of mountain biking outweigh its risks. The strength-building, cardiovascular benefits, heightened reflexes, improved coordination, and tremendous self-confidence which women who mountain bike experience are certainly desirable effects.

And the large number of women mountain biking has had another effect; there are now several women’s groups organized to educate women about the health and safety issues surrounding women’s mountain biking.

One of the organizations in the forefront of promoting healthy women mountain biking is the WOMBATS, or as they are officially named, the Women’s Mountain Biking and Tea Society. The members of WOMBATS all have one thing in common--their love for the adventure of mountain biking. The group accepts women regardless of their age, ethnicity, or culture; the only requirement for admission is that an applicant be an avid mountain biker.

The myth that women are a weak sex is dead, and the reality that women mountain biking is taking the mountain biking world by storm is becoming clearer each day. If you don’t believe it, head for the nearest mountain biking trail, watch the women of all ages and physical stature taking the terrain in their biking stride, and then tell yourself they are the weaker sex.

How Can A Massage Chair Benefit Me?

By Michael Russell

At fancy gadget stores, you’ll often find at least one massage chair waiting for you to test. Moms, kids, or just about anyone will take advantage of a free massage. For some, the new massage chairs even look like Darth Vader’s bathtub. But are they buying the chair? Why would anyone want to buy a massage chair when you can go to a masseuse and get a quality massage. There are some compelling reasons why one would get a massage chair.

Massage chairs allow you to relax in your own home without any distractions. The main advantage of this would be the privacy provided with a massage chair. Sometimes individuals do not feel comfortable going to a masseuse or do not want to take off clothes to a stranger. By having the chair in one’s home, a person anxious about public massages would be able to feel more relaxed and comfortable.

Massage chairs are pricey. They could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to even over ten thousand dollars. Ostensibly, the cost is steep. But the cost is a one-time cost. Think about the cost of a masseuse in a nice spa or massage organization. Each individual massage could run you around $100. If you were to have a massage 15 times a year, you’ll be spending $1,500 a year. A nice massage chair could pay for itself in a few years. As long as the model is a good quality chair, you can expect the chair to be available for many years.

You can also benefit by not worrying about making appointments to the masseuse. If all of the sudden you feel that your muscles are tightening or feel physically stressed, the massage chair is there for immediate use. The massage chair doesn’t make you wait. In fact, you’ll find that a lot of spas are booked on prime times. There could be some considerable work finding the right time to balance with your active lifestyle.

Not all masseuses offer clients more than one style, such as Swedish or Shiatsu. In a lot cases, the masseuse is a specialist in one or a very few styles. Today’s massage chairs provide more than one style. Since the massage chair rollers can mimic almost any hand pattern, it can give you more than one type of massage style. Importantly, this is all dependent of the type of chair.
But as more of these instruments become advanced, the chairs will offer limitless options.

Physical benefits of massage chairs can match massages from a real person. You can benefit from back and neck relief, muscle loosening, better blood flow, fewer muscle spasms, improved back posture and much more.

It also allows you to customize certain motions and patterns for a unique massage experience. You may not be able to do that with a massage therapist. Moreover, if you go to a spa, you may not get the same masseuse that provides the massage that you like. At least with a massage chair, you can count on getting the same type of massage that you enjoy.

Massage chairs are a great way for individuals to enjoy massage with privacy, customization and greater flexibility. The chairs will allow you to benefit in many ways including a better physical body and lifestyle.

Vince McMahon - Controversy Personified

By Adam Bradley

On June 11, 2007, WWE aired a segment at the end of RAW that featured Vince McMahon entering a limousine moments before it exploded. The show went off-air shortly after, and WWE.com reported the angle as though it were a legitimate occurrence, proclaiming that McMahon was "presumed dead". Although this was the fate of the fictional Vince McMahon character, no harm came to the actual person (that is, his death was part of a storyline).

With this being a seemingly obvious storyline why have so many fallen victim. Plenty of news agencies across America believed the story was actually real when it first occurred and even veteran fans have questioned whether the death was real or not.

WWE will certainly face a backlash for this stunt, from the authorities if nothing else, but controversy sells and Vince McMahon may well have pulled off a marketing masterstroke. The controversy itself won't upset Vince McMahon as he's used to it.

Back in the 1980's Vince McMahon was accused of sexual harassment by former referee Rita Chatterton. Chatterton even claimed on the TV show Now It Can Be Told that in 1986 she was raped by Vince McMahon in his limousine after she refused him oral sex. No charges where ever made.

Vince McMahon was also accused of sexual harassment in 2006 by Boca Raton, a tanning bar worker. It was first thought a lie as Vince McMahon was in Miami however it was later revealed he was in Miami the day the incident was reported but not the day before when it was alledged to have taken place. Vince McMahon though has once again escaped any charges.

Vince McMahon has also come under fire for constantly placing himself into sexual angles with many WWE Divas, including Sable, Trish Stratus, Stacy Keibler, Dawn Marie, Candice Michelle, Torrie Wilson, and Jackie Gayda.

McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment as a whole has been the center of controversy in the past, especially in the "Attitude Era" of what was the World Wrestling Federation - including D-Generation X for their sexual references, and Stone Cold Steve Austin for his trademark drinking of beer and flipping the middle finger. On the McMahon DVD, Stephanie comments that she had to nix a potential incest angle. According to her, Vince was to reveal himself as the father of her baby; when she said no, he pushed for Shane to be the father, but she turned that idea down as well. She also nixed Vince's idea that her wedding to Triple H be aired live on PPV and said that the only reason Vince ever hired Eric Bischoff was to be able to say that his longtime nemesis once worked for him.

Of course his biggest case of controversy occurred in 1992. The Vince McMahon owned WBF went out of business as alleged steroid abuse among both McMahon's wrestlers and bodybuilders came under scrutiny. McMahon was put on trial in 1994, accused of distributing steroids to his wrestlers.

As a legal move, his wife Linda was made CEO of the WWF during the trial. He was acquitted of all charges though he admitted to taking steroids himself in the 1980s. The prosecution made Hulk Hogan, who had recently left WWE for WCW, its star witness, and his testimony in the trial severely damaged the two's friendship, even though Hogan's testimony defended McMahon. After Hogan's testimony, McMahon went before the media declaring that he wished that Hogan had not lied about him on the witness stand. Vince McMahon may not be dead but when he does finally pass to the other side his gravestone should read "controversy personified".

Is John Cena Finally Over

By Adam Bradley

Never before in the history of the WWE have they being so determined to get a superstar over with the fans as they have been with John Cena. Almost three years after the push began the question still remains as to whether Cena is over or not with the fans.

Certain opponents have managed to get the fans to cheer for Cena but only Edge managed it out of his opponents with talent. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho all failed to get the fans on the side of John Cena. The opponents where Cena has been cheered for where hardly a sign of approval, a guy like The Great Khali is always going to be booed as he has no talent for the marks to respect and he's meant to be booed by every one else.

So why have WWE stuck by John Cena for so long? As already discussed he's not massively popular, he has his fans of course but no more than the likes of Christian had when he was with the WWE or than Chris Benoit. Sure he has great microphone skills but John Cenas in ring performance level is far below that of these two.

John Cena's character doesn't really stand out as amazing either his attitude seems forced and is nowhere near the level Steve Austin achieved but this seems to be where WWE want Cena to be as they have almost completely dropped his rapper gimmick in recent times.

It's been argued that Cena could've been the greatest heel in the company if the WWE had turned him at the height of the fans disapproval of him but why didn't they? The two arguments that have been used are that WWE didn't want to risk the merchandise sales by turning Cena heel and the other is that Triple H (as the number one heel at the time) was totally against the move and originally he blamed Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho for failing to get Cena over, something Triple H himself failed to do.

The WWE's commentary team didn't help matters by claiming the booing was because Cena was controversial. Why? What part of John Cena's character was ever controversial? He was never as aggressive as Austin or as in your face as the Rock. Nor did John Cena cheat to win matches or flip out with members of the crowd when things didn't go his own way. Using the controversial tag was just a cop out on the part of WWE.

John Cena must be respected though as against all the disapproval he never let it effect his professionalism and for that he deserves credit, Cena has always kept his persona intact no matter how loud the crowds objection to him.

In recent months it appeared fans where starting to warm to Cena but once put in the ring with an opponent that has any popularity Cena seems to come out the loser with the fans. The Great Khali was a good move by WWE as Cena was always going to prove more popular but now with a match in which two fan favorites in Lashley and Mick Foley are amongst his opponents the boo's and jeers are once again resounding towards Cena.

How much longer WWE persist with Cena is unknown but with no one standing out in the current roster John Cena will be a major player for a while to come, whether you like it or not.

Is DNA Testing In America Today Reliable?

By Sam Ness

DNA is present in nearly every cell of not only the human body but in all living things. The DNA is stored in the nucleus, which is regarded as the brain center of the cell, and if each DNA were unraveled from its spaghetti like structure it would stand nearly as high as a man. DNA is often referred to as the molecule of heredity, as this DNA is responsible for the genetic propagation of most inherited traits.

This is why DNA testing is used so successfully in forensic identification, or identifying or exonerating persons of crimes. DNA testing has also made it possible to positively identify victims of natural disasters, which may have been impossible through any other ways. Many unsolved crimes are being reinvestigated if DNA samples are available. Often enough, a new culprit is found, and when the case goes before the courts, he or she is found guilty.

At the same time, more and more people sitting in jails are freed, because DNA evidence indicates their innocence.

Because the DNA sequences are unique to a type of species, DNA has been used to prove the genealogy of individuals and groups of people. But it doesn't stop there, due to the fact that any type of organism can be identified by examining the DNA, this technology is being used to identify endangered and protected species of wildlife, and to detect bacteria and other organisms that may pollute our air, water, soil or food. DNA testing is also used for organ transplant programs in matching donors to recipients.

The DNA issue has become one of those issues that have raised much controversy over the past few years as the technology advances, which it is doing at a rapid pace. Some people find that keeping DNA on file is an infringement of civil liberties, as it is not as simple as a mere fingerprint. DNA has that person's whole blueprint stored, such as ethnic group, hair color, family lineage etc.

DNA has proved invaluable in proving paternity cases, either before the courts or as the latest trend shows for individuals who buy a DNA do it yourself kit where they take a swab inside the cheek and send the sample away for testing. It also opened it to manipulations, with some dishonest people trying to manipulate, or cheat a DNA test with far reaching legal ramifications.

No matter how vigilant the authorities are, this is quite easily done by substituting DNA blood test sample. Law authorities are trying to implement more reliable systems constantly. This is very welcomed news especially for difficult cases of parenthood and serious crimes.

Tracing ancestral origins through DNA testing has unlocked the door to many who had come to the end of the road in assembling their family tree. DNA is being used to determine Native American or Jewish ancestry, and DNA is able to confirm paternal and maternal lineage for both males and females. The genealogy driven DNA testing has proven to be just one of the countless many areas that are now available since the secrets of DNA have begun to be unlocked.

DNA testing holds many puzzles for Sam Ness. His website DNA-Test-Secrets.com tries to aid those seeking truth.

Breast Cancer - Prevent With Healthy Living

By Michael Russell

Generally speaking, breast cancer can be explained as an abnormal growth or a mass of cells, also known as a tumor, anywhere within the breast or immediate surrounding area. Usually the breast tumor is felt to be a lumpy mass during the early stages of breast cancer. If a woman feels a lump or abnormality of the breast of any kind, she should see a doctor immediately. In many cases, there is no cause for alarm, but because breast cancer can be a killer, medical attention is highly recommended.

When breast cancer is detected early, it can be treated quickly and effectively - usually with excellent results. Quick treatment is essential because all breast tumors start off benign initially. If the tumor has not begun to grow abnormally and is removed during the benign stage, the cancer may not spread. If the cancer does not spread, the woman is able to lead a normal, cancer-free life from that point on.

As with most cancers, the exact cause of breast cancer has not been pinpointed. However, there are many risk factors applied to many women. There are many arguments that breast cancer is hereditary, so if there is a history of the cancer in a woman’s family, she should see a doctor regularly for preventative measures. While heredity may play a role, life choices do as well. For instance, women who smoke cigarettes and consume alcohol regularly are at a higher risk for breast cancer than those who do not. Additionally, obese women that do not engage in regular physical activity are at an elevated risk for breast cancer.

It has been found, however, that altering the levels of hormones in the body can lead to different forms of cancer, breast cancer included. Many women take drugs and supplements that have estrogen as a main ingredient. These medications are used to increase sexual drive, assist in lactation, or deal with menopause. There are studies currently underway to help determine the influence of increased levels of estrogen on the development of breast cancer.

Despite the exact causes of breast cancer being unknown, there are many resources explaining and suggesting how a woman might prevent it. While much of this literature is purely speculation, there are precautions all women can take including maintaining a healthy body weight. Because overweight women have a higher chance of developing breast cancer, it is a good idea to lose the fat. Also, regular visits to the doctor are recommended. However, one of the best ways a woman can monitor her breast health is by conducting the at-home exam once a month.

In addition to regular doctor visits and maintaining a healthy body weight, a healthy diet and plenty of exercise can also influence the onset, or not, of many types of cancers. Foods that contain nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants essential to preventing breast cancer include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and legumes. Other good foods are any type of citrus, tomatoes and soy products. A diet low in carbohydrates may also be helpful.

Combining the healthy diet with regular exercise, a positive attitude and an overall healthy lifestyle may dramatically reduce a woman’s chances of developing breast cancer. By no means are these suggestions the only answer, but should be followed as part of an overall attempt at living as healthy as possible.

Five Easy Tips for Healthy Weight Loss

By Carl Walker

If you want to lose weight, it isn’t enough to simply go on a diet – you have to make a change in your entire lifestyle. This is a difficult task, and many people do more harm to themselves than good as they pursue it. Here are five tips for healthy weight loss that will help you keep your eyes on the goal.

1. Slow and Steady is Better than Up and Down
It’s tempting to jump into a diet with both feet, ruthlessly slashing your favorite foods and promising yourself that you can really live on carrot sticks and celery for the rest of your life. But sooner or later, your body is going to rebel, and you’ll binge. Then you’ll feel bad. Then you’ll give up. It’s far better to change your eating habits slowly and see steady progress.

2. Be Careful to Get Enough Nutrients
Your body needs food. It needs carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals, proteins, and roughage. Be careful that when you cut your calories, you don’t cut necessary nutrition as well.

3. Water is Your Friend
Water removes toxins from your body, keeps you refreshed and energized, and helps keep you from feeling so hungry. Many cravings and hunger pangs are actually signs that your body is dehydrated. Drink plenty of water each day.

4. Don’t Overdo the Exercise
Exercise is a vital part of any healthy diet, but if you hurt yourself, you won’t be able to exercise efficiently. Listen to what your body is telling you. Push your boundaries gently, but don’t exercise yourself to the point of exhaustion or injury. Research your exercise plan to make sure that you are not exceeding the recommended number of times per week you should do various workouts.

5. Be Kind to Yourself
It’s easy for dieters to get angry at their bodies for being so slow, for weight loss being so difficult. Try to be patient with the time it takes to lose weight and with any relapses you might suffer. Remember that the weight didn’t go on overnight, and it’s not going to disappear overnight, either.

Stop Smoking Methods - Why Is Nicotine So Addictive?

By Peter Ward

The latest research into nicotine addiction is leading to an improved understanding of the effects and working mechanism of the drug on the body, even indicating a genetic predisposition to becoming addicted to cigarettes.
Advanced neuro- imaging techniques assist researchers by allowing them to observe specific changes in the brain under the influence of nicotine. The hope is that these findings will allow the development of new and effective smoking cessation treatments.
When a person smokes a cigarette they ingest around 1 to 2mg of nicotine, after inhalation the smoker receives an initial “high” due to stimulation of the adrenal glands. This causes a rush of adrenaline which stimulates the body; this in turn causes a release of glucose, an increase in blood pressure as well as breathing rate and heart rate.
The calming effect of nicotine that smokers report is a response to the loss of withdrawal symptoms rather than the drug itself. It seem that the effect of nicotine on the brain is to activate parts of the brain that regulate feelings of pleasure, increasing the levels of the chemical, dopamine, also associated with sensations of physical reward. Research also indicates that certain other chemicals in tobacco smoke reinforce the nicotine effect.
An enzyme called monoamine oxidase which helps break down dopamine, is less effective when smoking causing the pleasurable dopamine effect to last longer. Another chemical acetaldehyde seem to chemically enhance the effect of nicotine The addictive nature of nicotine comes from the fact that these pleasurable effects are short lived, causing the smoker to desire more of the drug to obtain the pleasure reward, so driving them back to tobacco use.
The other addictive aspect of smoking for some people is the “ritual” of smoking. The purchase, the handling, the lighting and smoking of a cigarette all add to its habit forming nature.
The desire to smoke can be put into two main categories.1) The physical craving for nicotine, resulting in the dopamine effect, that the body experiences due to the chemical changes detailed above and…2) The thoughts and attitudes held by the smoker themselves, what are the real reasons behind a persons smoking habit. Often understanding why a person truly smokes can help them quit by addressing underlying problems.
By understanding these two sides, combination treatments such as the use of nicotine replacement therapy, in the form of patches or gum, in conjunction with behavioural therapies, such as, neuro linguistic programming or cognitive behavioural therapy treat both aspects of the addition together. This kind of combination approach has proved highly effective. An improved understanding of nicotine addiction, as well as how it works, will lead to advanced treatments in the future. These will add to existing forms of treatment
Peter Ward writes on a variety of health and associated health issues. The website below offers free guidance and advice on smoking cessation. Concentrating on changing smokers attitudes and thoughts to help them quit smoking by understanding why they smoke in the first instance. Click on the link : http://www.quit-smoking-asap.com

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston as Seen Through Numerology and Astrology

By Scott Petullo

The media won’t tell you what Brad and Jennifer’s marriage was really like because they don’t know.
We do know that their marriage didn’t “fail” just because it didn’t last forever.

We do know that since both of them are independently very wealthy and that money is not an issue, they were unlikely to stay trapped in a bad marriage due to financial limitations.

We do know that since both of them are attractive and very successful, they most likely had less fear than most people about being able to find new romantic partners after divorce, and therefore were more likely to “call it like it is” instead of pretending it to be a good marriage.

We do know that each of them have the right to date whomever they want after they split.

We do know that there is a saying in Hollywood that “Any press is good press.”

We do know that there is no such thing as a victim.

We do know that most relationships have time limits. Just because a couple is physically together, does not mean that their relationship didn’t end months, years, or even decades ago.
Keep in mind that you don’t know exactly when Brad and Jennifer finally decided to go their separate ways. However, looking into their basic numerology and astrology charts, we learn quite a bit about their relationship.

We are almost positive we have all of Brad’s birth data, But we’re not sure about Jennifer’s birth time. Therefore, we’ll do a general overview reading using mainly their full dates of birth.
Were both Jennifer and Brad destined for big-time fame? Yes.

Does Jennifer have many indications of higher than average love life challenges in her basic charts including plenty of romantic heartache and disappointment? Yes, absolutely. She (her higher-self, not her personality) has chosen to balance a lot of this type of karma carried over from past lives.

Does Brad also have his share of not-so-pleasant love relationship karma? Yes, absolutely.
Reportedly, Jennifer and Brad met and started dating in 1997. Does the approximate time (12 month window) they initiated their relationship suggest a long-term harmonious connection based on their basic charts? No, not at all.

Brad and Jennifer were married July 29th, 2000, which is about 1/6th of the way through a transition period for Brad including extremely challenging fear-about-the-future energy and an overall collapse of cherished ideals; anything but supportive of a solid, long-term marital foundation.

We suspect he knew he was making a mistake by going ahead with the marriage, but we also feel the event was going to happen no matter what. Fate is fate.

Based on our findings, 2003 was extremely emotionally trying for Jennifer and they both knew their marriage was finished in 2003.

Instead of viewing their relationship and consequent break-up as a negative, we choose to see it as a part of their personal destinies, including important lessons that their higher-selves desired to learn. Now they can both move ahead with their lives and address the other karma they are supposed to balance.

Brad and Jennifer’s relationship and marriage seemed like a fairytale in the beginning, especially if viewed at face value through all the special reports and magazine articles. Unfortunately, fairytales don’t exist in real life. Too many couples expect, even demand a dream relationship and learn the hard way that if it’s not meant to be, it will not be. Instead, the best approach, as we’ve said before, is to accept each relationship for what it’s meant to be for however long it’s meant to be.

Twin Flames, Soul Mates & New Age Romance - More Myth Than Reality

By Scott Petullo

The only truly fulfilling and perfect love is self-love.
Many of us want to find our “soul mate,” a term often used to imply that there is one perfect partner for each individual. Metaphysically defined, a soul mate is simply someone you have known in a prior existence. Each person may have hundreds or even thousands of soul mates.

Edgar Cayce, one of the most successful psychics and medical intuitives ever in the United States, stated many times that there isn’t just one person out there who is perfect for you. He expressed in his readings that there are many love relationship possibilities for each person.

When you meet a soul mate, you may feel like you know the person but you can’t quite place from where. Your souls knew each other in a different time and place, although your present personalities usually don’t remember the details. You may have been lovers, siblings, relatives, friends, acquaintances, coworkers, or even enemies. You may instantly like or even love the person, or you may instantly dislike him or her.

Soul mate relationships that develop into love relationships take many different forms, depending on the karmic reasons the couple has reunited again. The present life interaction also depends on how much of their own baggage they’ve worked through, how much they take responsibility for their behavior and their lives, and how aware and honest they are with themselves and others.

There is always a reason for two souls reuniting. It may be due to unfinished business, such as one owing the other in some important way. It may be in the form of a project they are to complete together, such as the birth of and caring for a child. Sometimes it’s a test, to see if they can interact without hurting each other.

Some souls reunite simply for the purpose of enjoying each other again and have little or no negative karma to work through. They may have earned this relationship of harmony through many lifetimes of working through their conflicts. These are the kind of relationships sometimes portrayed in romance novels. Many of us fantasize about having these kinds of relationships, where there’s little conflict and an excess of love, admiration, acceptance, and respect. Few of us, unfortunately, experience them.

A twin flame or soul has been defined as a soul who was created at the same time as you and who may be your “other half.” Based on our research we feel this definition of twin souls is the result of earthbound thinking. We don’t “pair off” with only one partner in the spirit world.
Pairing off here on Earth and hoping for a lifetime relationship with the same partner often seems motivated by a fear of being alone and/or a fear of abandonment.

A different definition of a twin soul could be a soul mate with which you have shared many lifetimes and, through those experiences, perfected the relationship. This soul is one of the most ideal soul mates for you—assuming you both get your current personalities and hang-ups out of the way.

In his book Edgar Cayce on Soul Mates, Kevin J. Todeschi suggests yet another definition: “The primary distinction between soul mates and twin souls is that soul mates are brought together as a means of assisting both people in soul growth and twin souls often come together in an effort to achieve a joint task or a united work.”

Cayce also indicated that twin souls are not always romantically involved and that there is more than one twin soul for each person.

Hence, while most people associate a soul mate with romance, the main purpose has to do with personal growth, often through trials and challenges. In fact, many of our clients who have been in soul mate relationships say they are hesitant to get into another one, yet they realize that they’re here on earth primarily to learn, not just to get what feels good.

(Additional information about soul mates and twin flames can be found here:
http://www.howisyourlovelife.com/about_the_book.htm )

How do you know you’ve found a relationship soul mate? Sometimes it involves intense feelings from the very start, other times it’s not so obvious. Are you sexually compatible? Is there lots of passion in your relationship? What about trust and mutual respect? Do you share the same views about love and relationships? It’s possible to determine how compatible you are with another person through numerology, astrology, handwriting analysis, and past life regression.

Fast Product Launching

By Mark Fortimer

A new product launch means lots of hard work, preparation, and time that needs to go in no matter where you work or for whom. The launch of the product is a critical event and everything has to go right in order for the product to succeed in the market. Once the product is launched there is no time to go back and fix things because all that should have been taken care of earlier. The only way a product can succeed is if it well planned before its creating begins and is carried through flawlessly through the launch. Here are some useful tips you can use during your product launch.

You need to start advertising your product before the product launch so that the market is aware of your launch plans and date. There are many ways to do this; both online and offline.
The key thing is to spread the word that a new product is on the way.

Try finding business partners and tie up with them. If you happen to be selling cars then it does not hurt to have your ads show up on a website that offers car repair or runs a gas station. This way you get to cover two target markets at the same time.

Use press releases and other tools to generate news regarding your product. There are several ezines and printed publications that you can use for this purpose.

Make sure you test out everything before the product launch date. Your landing page and other associated elements must be working perfectly.

Interest Held But Rate Rise 'Still On The Cards'

By Abbi Rouse

Last week, the Bank of England's monetary policy committee (MPC) announced that interest rates were to remain at 5.5 per cent.

As a result, consumers looking to take out secured and Home Loans - in addition to existing borrowers - are likely to find their monthly repayment costs staying consistent.

Following the decision to raise the interest by quarter of a per cent last month, the MPC has been reported to have held the base rate so as to allow the committee more time to judge the full effect of increases in May and January.

However, despite the decision, secured loan borrowers are warned that they have no time for "complacency" with future rises predicted by various industry experts.

Director general for the Council of Mortgage Lenders, Michael Coogan claimed that as millions of homeowners are to come to the end of their fixed-rate deals over the next 18 months they could see their monthly mortgage costs raising by up to 1.5 per cent.

He said: "More than two million borrowers over the next year and a half will reach the end of fixed-rate deals and will face the prospect of higher mortgage payments."

Mr Coogan went on to add that consumers coming to the end of a two year fixed-rate deal for a £114,000 mortgage could find their monthly loan costs rising by £143 a month.

Meanwhile, an investor survey conducted by Barclays indicated that 87 per cent of respondents believe interest rates are set to be raised again over the course of this year, with 45 per cent believing they will break the six per cent barrier.

Equity analyst Henk Potts claimed that businesses are "continuing to push through price rises" with July indicated as the month most likely to witness the next rise.

David Stubbs, senior economist for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, claimed that although the hold was "not unexpected", at least one further rise is still on the cards" with an increase to at least six per cent mooted by the end of 2007.

However, Warren Bright, chief executive of propertyfinder.com, claimed that as consumers are yet to feel the total impact of the two most recent base rate rises on their ability to make homeowner loan repayments, the MPC should avoid pushing interest rates up unnecessarily.

"We would warn against any further action that puts pressure on people trying to buy and sell homes," he asserted.

These sentiments were echoed by David Merifield, president of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber.

Mr Merifield told the Sheffield Star that the MPC was 'right' to keep the interest rate level for June at 5.5 per cent and suggested an excessive rise could result in "monetary overkill".

As a result, those looking to take out a competitively priced personal loan could be well advised to act quickly as Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England, has indicated that interest rates could well rise in the short-term.

Speaking to the Confederation of British Industry in Wales, he warned consumers against taking out personal loans which they may be unable to afford should the base rate rise in the future.

He said: "Obvious though the point may seem, it is unwise to borrow so much that the repayments are affordable only if interest rates remain at their initial levels."

However, Mr King did have some good news for consumers - pointing out that inflation levels are set to fall - due to lower energy prices which could help Britons with attempts at making repayments on personal loans, credit cards and other forms of borrowing.

Despite this announcement, interest rates seem almost certain to increase at least once before the end of the year, so for those with financial management difficulties opting for a low-rate personal loan to consolidate their debts now could well be a wise option.

Harbour Island Bahamas - Best Kept Secret

By Perry Joseph

Promise not to tell? One of the best kept secrets of the Bahamas is Harbour Island. This romantic little island, known as "Briland" by its inhabitants, is a short hop from the States. A one hour flight from Florida to North Eleuthera followed by a brief cab and water taxi ride gets you to this Bahamas gem in a hurry.

Harbour Island is less than 4 miles long and a 1/2 mile wide. Its long wide beach is famous for its hard-packed pale pink sand. The likes of Fodors and Conde Nast rate it as one of the "best Bahamas beaches." The beach, combined with some great restaurants, hotels and vacation home rentals, makes Harbour Island a destination of choice amongst Bahamas enthusiasts. It's no surprise to find a few "rich and famous" there -- they know they won't be hounded.

Central to Harbour island is Dunmore Town. This quaint and friendly community features old Victorian structures adorned with Bahama's colorful pastel paint schemes. No high rise hotels, fast food or traffic jams on this island!

Golf cart rentals are the transportation of choice. Swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and just plain walking the beach are some of the popular activities. To be sure, Harbour Island is not known for its shopping and night life nor is there any gambling. If you seek large crowds, wild parties or theme park rides, this is not your destination.

Harbour Island's weather is delightful; especially during late Winter and Spring when there is little chance of rain. Ocean breezes take any edge off of moderately warm temperatures ranging from the 70s to 80s during the day and late 60s at night. Air conditioning during season is unnecessary -- ceiling fans are adequate. Nothing beats falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean through an open window.

Dining out is casual. The better restaurants include Pink Sands Hotel, Coral Sands, The Landing, Rock House, Romora Bay Club and Harbour Lounge. For local fare, Ma Ruby's should not be missed. And there are more... Part of the pleasure of exploring the island is checking out the restaurants. When compared to other Bahamian islands, Harbour Island has one of the best selections of restaurants -- all within close proximity to any place you stay.

On the ocean side, hotels include Pink Sands Hotel, Coral Sands Hotel and Dunmore Beach Club. On the bay side, it's The Landing Inn and the Rock House. On a budget? There are other hotels to choose from. Visiting Harbour Island is not cheap, but if it was, then everybody would be there, right?

Harbour Island's vacation home rentals and villas are numerous. Location and size come at a price. If you desire "beachfront", the better locations are usually on the north and south along the east coast. If you want to save a little, there are some nice rentals in Dunmore Town and others located in the interior of the island. The beach is always minutes away.

Look for home rentals on the internet offering more than a few photos so you know what to expect. A number of rentals are handled by rental or real estate agents who may not provide much in the way of details, descriptions, map locations or photos. Owners who care about promoting their home rental typically have independent web sites and accept e-mail inquiries directly.

The better house rentals on Harbour Island are booked nearly a year in advance of prime season. Those who want the best make early reservations -- many are repeat customers. You can also take a "standby" position on a number of rentals in hopes someone cancels. Ask for referrals and double check policies for deposits and refunds.

If you seek a memorable and relaxed Bahamas vacation coupled with sun, sea, great food and a romantic beachfront that will knock your eyes out, consider Harbour Island. See you on the beach!

Swimming with Dolphins in California

By Thomas Morva

California’s Central Coast is home to a variety of marine life including several types of dolphins.
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), a Federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast, supports one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems. It is home to numerous mammals, including whales and dolphins.

Stretching from Marin to Cambria, the MBNMS encompasses a shoreline length of 276 miles and 5,322 square miles of ocean.

Warm water conditions in the Monterey Bay have attracted several species here from warm water areas, including the Long-Beaked and Short-Beaked Common Dolphins, normally seen from the Channel Islands south to Baja California.

These Common Dolphins congregate at the edge of the Monterey Submarine Canyon, where sardines, mackerel, and squid seem to be their primary attraction. Other dolphins and porpoises in the Monterey Bay include the Pacific White-Sided Dolphin, Rissos Dolphin, the Northern Right Whale Dolphin, the Bottlenose Dolphin, Dalls Porpoise, and the Harbor Porpoise.

The US government has prohibited swims with the dolphin activities in the marine sanctuary. There is only one swim with the dolphin activity center in California and that too in a private enclosure of a theme park owned by the Six Flags Marine World in collaboration with Ocean Discovery.

The new Caribbean-themed destination is the only place in Northern California where guests can personally interact with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, southern stingrays and warm-weathered penguins.

The 2-acre area provides guests the opportunity to interact with and feed some of the world's natural wonders while learning about the animals and the importance of natural habitat conservation and protection.

Ocean Discovery provides interactive experiences with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins inside a custom designed 200,000-gallon pool where guests can have direct contact with the animals and their trainers. During designated times guests can touch and feed the dolphins with the assistance of the Park's veteran trainers. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the dolphins from an underwater viewing area.

Six Flags Marine World is located in Vallejo, California, off of Interstate 80, just 30 miles northeast of San Francisco, 50 miles southwest of Sacramento and near the Napa Valley Wine Country.

Dolphin Swim Info provides detailed information about swimming with dolphins, including profiles of the best places to swim with dolphins: Florida, Hawaii, Cancun, California, Malta, Key Largo, and the Bahamas. Dolphin Swim Info is affiliated with Original Content.

Cheap International Plane Tickets

By Steven Gillman

The best place to buy cheap international plane tickets is online. We've tried travel agencies and they can't compete with the discount ticket websites. You can search google ("cheap airfare South America", for example), or go straight to one of the well-known sites, like Expedia, Travelocity, Cheap Tickets, Hotwire or Priceline.

I just did a quick search for the cheapest airfare from Tucson, Arizona, to Buenos Aires, Argentina, using the five sites mentioned. They ranged from $1221 down to $873, and there were fares as high as $3728. Hotwire happened to have the cheapest, but they were the worst of the five when I searched for a domestic flight earlier. You cannot say which service will find the cheapest international plane tickets from week to week. My number one money-saving tip is to always check several websites when shopping for inexpensive flights.

My Accidental $1000 Discovery
Before going to Ecuador, I searched several websites that deal in cheap international plane tickets. The cheapest airfare from Traverse City, Michigan to Quito, was $1720. Out of curiosity, I checked Miami to Quito, and it was only $400. Airfare from Traverse City to Miami was $300.
Book two separate flights and save more than $1000! The discount sites aren't set up to check in this way (yet), so you have to do this on your own.

If your first flight is late and you miss the second, you may not get a refund, but it is still cheaper (every time I checked) to just book a flight to Miami and catch a flight to Quito without a reservation, thus avoiding this problem. This strategy is best for those in towns without international airports. If you live in Miami, you already have cheap international airfare.

Courier Flights
As an air courier, you can get really cheap international plane tickets. Courier companies ship material in the luggage space of an aircraft passenger because it can be quicker, cheaper, and more reliable than sending the shipment unaccompanied, since checked luggage bypasses many of the typical customs delays. The courier company begins by purchasing airfare, and then they resell the plane tickets to you. In exchange for your luggage space, they give you a discount on the airfare.

An Example Of A Courier Flight
I saved over $150 on my plane tickets this way when I went to Ecuador the first time. I had to walk several suitcases of car parts through customs, but there was a representative of the courier company on either end, and I did get to look inside the luggage, so I knew what I was carrying. I had to carry a plane propeller on the return trip, but it wasn't too much trouble, and made a good story.

Limitations To Courier Travel
You generally can only be an air courier if you travel alone. Once in a while, a courier company will have opportunities for flights on or near the same date. Otherwise, your travel partner can pay full fare on the same flight. You also can usually only bring carry-on luggage, since the point is for the shipping company to use your checked luggage allowance.

Really Cheap Courier Flights
Sometimes air couriers fly internationally for free, and almost always very cheap. It is a matter of how badly the company needs you and how flexible you can be (can you fly to Paris on Friday?). In general air courier opportunities are becoming rarer, due to the recent heavier regulation of international flights. There still are opportunities for cheap tickets, though. You can find out more at The Air Courier Association Website (www.aircourier.org). The ACA can also help you get really cheap plane tickets by way of airline ticket wholesalers, discounters, last minute specials, and stand-by travel.

More Tips On Cheap International Plane Tickets
When searching for fares using the discount websites, try several different departure and return dates if you can. The difference of a day or two can save you a lot. There is little logic to airfare pricing, so don't try too hard to figure it out. Just be aware that if you leave on Friday instead of Wednesday (or vice-versa), you may save $100.

Check the boxes that say "any time" for departure and "2 or more connecting flights". Even if you aren't sure that you want to leave at midnight, see what your options are-the savings might change your mind. Whenever the search criteria allow you choices, take the ones that are the least restrictive for the airlines. Again, if the savings aren't enough, you can always book first class, direct flights, or whatever you prefer.

Buying your plane tickets at least a week in advance is usually cheaper. Also, there can be a dramatic difference (but not always) if your trip is over thirty days. You may want to cut it from 32 days to 30 to save hundreds of dollars on your fare. Play with the dates on one of the websites mentioned. You never know what you might discover.

Want To Go Really Cheap?
You can take a bus to a major city, if you don't live in one, and then take an international flight from there to save quite a bit of money. My wife and I recently went to Ecuador for six weeks. The cheapest discount website plane tickets we could find were $3400 for the two of us. By taking a bus to Miami ($352 round-trip for 2), then flying from there to Quito ($622 round-trip for 2), we saved over $2400 - even after the taxi fare from the bus station to the airport. That's a lot of money to us, certainly worth an extra day-and-a-half on a bus. (The whole six weeks cost less than $2500.)

The bottom line is that if you spend a few minutes or an hour to do some research, you might save hundreds of dollars. Good luck and happy travels.

Dubai Lifestyle - The History of the City and Day to Day Life in Dubai

By Rhiannon Williamson

Background Information to the United Arab Emirates and Dubai: -

Dubai is one of the seven states that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE); it is located in the Middle East. The UAE borders the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf and is situated between Oman and Saudi Arabia. The United Arab Emirates was formed in 1971 by the then ‘Trucial States’ after their independence from Britain.

The UAE is governed by a Supreme Council of Rulers, the council is made up of the seven emirs and they appoint the prime minister and the cabinet for the country. Despite being ultimately ruled by the Supreme Council, as with the other six states, Dubai maintains a large degree of autonomy from the UAE when it comes to general decision making for the city’s development.

Oil was first discovered in the United Arab Emirates in the 1950s, before that the country’s economy was built on fishing and pearling, since 1962, when Abu Dhabi became the first of the emirates to begin exporting the oil, the country's economy has been completely transformed.

Sheikh Zayed, who has been the president of the UAE since its inception, quickly understood the economic potential for the country from the oil industry. He has continued to ensure that each of the emirates benefits from the oil generated wealth, he has insisted on the reinvestment of oil revenues into the healthcare system, the education system and the general national infrastructure.

The development of the oil industry has led to a large influx of foreign workers to the UAE, in fact Dubai’s population is the fastest growing in the world and the foreign population makes up about three quarters of the entire UAE population! As a direct result of this fact the UAE is one of the most liberal countries in the Gulf, with other cultures and beliefs tolerated. Dubai has also been quick to understand the need for diversification. Oil in the region is only projected to last for about 30 years and so Dubai has successfully embarked upon a major diversification program aimed to at developing industries and commercial enterprises to take the place of oil as the predominate commodity of the state's economy.

The climate in Dubai is sub-tropical and arid or desert like. The city enjoys almost year round sunny blue skies. Rain is infrequent and if it does fall, it falls in the winter.

Temperatures range from lows of 10°C to extreme summer highs of 48°C. The average maximum daily temperature in January is 24°C and the average maximum daily temperature in July is 41°C when humidity is very high.

Day to Day Life in Dubai

Accommodation
If you are considering moving to Dubai one of your first thoughts will no doubt be finding somewhere to live. This is not something you’ll find too tricky, there are many companies advertising rental accommodation in the classified sections of local newspapers and they offer everything from private villas to luxury apartments or even shared accommodation. Whatever your budgetary and lifestyle requirements are, the specialist relocation and housing companies will be sure to have something to assist you. If you prefer to find your accommodation privately and avoid any agency costs, many people use supermarkets notice boards to advertise or request accommodation.

In terms of which areas of the city offer the type of accommodation you are after, Jumeirah, Umm Sequiem and the Safa Park area are upmarket and offer villa-type accommodation. Satwa and Garhoud also offer villas but are slightly cheaper. Rashidiya, Mirdif and Al Quoz are mainly Arabic areas and they actually attract a lot of expats.

If you are after an apartment the most popular areas are around Bur Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Road with cheaper flats are available in Deira, Satwa and Karama. Some of the more exclusive apartment developments offer shared gym and pool facilities together with garaged car parking and the like.

Education
If you are considering moving to Dubai with family and are interested in finding out about the education system and the availability and quality of schools, one of the best ways is to ask around! Because of the numbers of expats in Dubai there is actually a large number of primary and secondary schools from which you can to choose. Most schools are private fee paying schools and really the best way to get an idea of the reputation of a school is to ask friends, colleagues and other expats who live in Dubai. Many of the schools also have their own websites where you can learn about the curriculum they follow, after school programs etc.

When it comes to enrolling your child in the UAE there are a few restrictions you should be aware of. For example you are not allowed to change your child’s school during the academic year…unless approval is given by the Ministry of Education and the circumstances are ‘special’.

This means that you have to make sure the school you choose for your child will definitely suit them. Another restriction you should be aware of is that is you move to Dubai on or after the 1st May each year you can’t enrol your child into the schooling system for that year. Instead you’ll have to enrol for the beginning of the new school year which is usually the beginning of September.

Health
Another consideration you may have if thinking about relocation to Dubai may be the state of the health care system available there. It is fair to say that Dubai has many very well equipped hospitals and surgeries. Dubai’s Department of Health and Medical Services runs Dubai, Rashid, Maktoum and Al Wasl hospitals, with Dubai Hospital one of the best medical centres in the entire Middle East. Al Wasl is a maternity and gynaecology hospital.

The Department of Health also run out patient clinics or surgeries and in addition there are a number of quality private hospitals in Dubai offering in and out patient facilities – e.g., The American and Welcare Hospitals. Overall both the private and publicly offered health care services in Dubai are first class.

Working
Working in Dubai you will enjoy a tax free salary and all shop goods can be bought at tax free prices, making it an incredibly attractive city to international workers and international companies. Job opportunities in Dubai and diverse and plentiful, particularly since the additions of the Media and Internet cities…Dubai is a city expanding its horizons at an unrivalled rate.

It is important to mention that some countries worldwide have tax laws enabling them to tax their nationals on their worldwide income. It is important to check your status with an international accountant before taking up employment in the city.

Lifestyle
Dubai has a thriving expat population who make the most of their tax free lifestyle in this amazing city of opportunity. The nightlife in the city is excellent, with cocktail bars, wine bars, themed bars and typical British or Irish pubs available, many of which offer food and entertainment as well.

High standard international cuisine is available in the city’s many restaurants and if you are looking for lively evening entertainment there are numerous night clubs around the city. Some of the clubs attract international DJs; there are also Middle Eastern, Indian and Asian nightclubs offering entertainment with singers and dancers. Dubai also welcomes international touring singing and entertainment acts which cater to all tastes and ages…from traditional theatre groups to ballet, from opera to international rock and pop bands - all are regular visitors to the United Arab Emirates.

You can be assured of an exciting pace of life in Dubai and a high standard of living.

A Look at Punta Cana Weather

By Jennifer Bailey

The weather in the Dominican Republic remains tropical year-round with the temperatures averaging around 25°C (77°F). The summer and winter seasons differ by only a slight variation in temperature. Visitors coming to the Dominican Republic, practically any time of the year can expect to be treated with extended periods of blue sunny skies -- ideal weather for getting a nice tan.

The best time to visit Punta Cana is during the "cool" season from November to April. During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm with relatively low levels of humidity and low precipitation. Temperatures along the coast are constant around 29°C (84°F) during the day and drop to a comfortable 20°C (68°F) at night.

The "hot" season runs roughly from May to October when the average temperature rises to 31°C (87°F) during the daytime and drops to about 22°C (72°F) at night. But with the high humidity levels during this season, the temperature feels much hotter. Rains do bring some respite from the heat during May through August, but usually this turns out to be no more than a 30-minute tropical shower. It is advised that travelers pack light and include a lot of cool and light fitting cotton clothing.

Despite such minimal difference between the temperatures in summer and winter, the climate tends to vary a lot from year to year due to the influence of the weather phenomena known as "El Niño" and "La Niña" among others. The greatest threat to the Dominican Republic comes from hurricanes. The Caribbean hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30. August and September are the more hurricane-prone months. The major resorts have become adept at getting back on their feet quickly after a hurricane.

As in most tropical areas, in Punta Cana too the menace of mosquitoes looms large. The mosquitoes usually appear after dusk but they are seasonal and more noticeable in the rainy season. Visitors are advised to wear long, comfortable cotton pants after dusk and use insect repellent sprays before venturing outside.

Living in Mexico - Two Prices for Everything

By Douglas Bower

Readers love to write to contradict my too-often made point of American prices versus Mexican prices in Mexico. They will disagree with me by saying, "Well, I've never seen any indication of a dual price gouging therefore it can't exist." Lovely bit of logic, don't you agree?

What might be going on is further proof of the Bubble Theory of Expatriation that I've been reading from my favorite ethnographer. Actually, it is the Mexicans who live in communities that support the gringo colonies who suggest the Bubble Theory. This theory is really very easy. It goes something like this:

"To learn about a culture is best accomplished by living in the culture as do the locals (in this case Mexicans) in that culture."

If you notice, in any area where there is a gringo enclave, you will not see Mexicans living within the gringo enclaves. So, if you want to learn the culture, perhaps you should get the point that you will have to live in the culture as do the Mexicans you claim to know and whom you claim: "they love us here."

See? It's easy. Live in the culture!

One thing that those Gringos who are Bubble-Dwellers will miss out on is the salient fact that there are two prices. One is the gringo price and one is the Mexican price. If you live in The Bubble you will never, ever, in your expat career know this. You will miss it.

My long-time expat friend, "EH", who has lived in Mexico for more than thirty years, told the contractor she hired to fix up the rural house she bought: "I want Mexican prices on everything."

Why do you suppose she asked that?

When a mutual Mexicana friend of mine and "EH"'s heard who she hired to be her contractor, she immediately went to "EH" and told her to hire someone else who would give her the Mexican prices.

Why do you suppose she did that?

When the wife and I told the son, a good friend, of a real estate baroness in Guanajuato that we were moving to another city, he told us, "Be sure you let the owners of the potential home you rent that you are artists (we're writers) and not wealthy retiree Americans coming to live in that city."

Why do you suppose he told us that?

Those Gringos who live inside The Bubble, the artificial colonies, will never be able to know to the degree they are being charged the American prices for everything under the sun.
Right now, where we are living, we are being charged about fifty bucks more than what a Mexican would be charged. Why's that?

We are Americans. It is assumed we are all filthy rich. Think about that when planning your retirement to Mexico and if you can (or want) to afford the pricing discrimination that is a daily affair here.
