The real threat to Google

It's not the prospect of a Microsoft-Yahoo deal. The Web giant's bigger worry is the mobile phone in your pocket or purse. Here's why.
By BusinessWeek

Google's biggest threat may not be Microsoft (MSFT, news, msgs) or Yahoo (YHOO, news, msgs).

No, one of the most formidable challenges facing Google (GOOG, news, msgs) is likely sitting in your pocket or purse. It's your cell phone, and it will put added pressure on Google and other Internet companies to revamp the way they handle online marketing.

As more people use cell phones -- with their tiny glass screens -- to gain access to the Internet, Google and other online advertisers will have less space, or what's called ad inventory, in which to place marketing messages for customers. Google makes money selling ad inventory and a cell phone just doesn't provide much room for it.

Google can fit about 10 ads on a standard computer screen. (If you look at Google search results on a PC monitor, paid ads are the listings at the very top and along the right.) But on your cell phone, if you type in a search query at google.com you get only one or two paid ads in response.

Imagine the horror that would befall your business if a large slice of what you sell suddenly disappeared. A similar fate could befall companies that depend on online advertising, as small screens become the gateway to the Internet.

No one's suggesting that consumers will abandon standard computer screens overnight. And early research shows that mobile advertising may be more effective than standard online advertising, suggesting that it will be more lucrative for the companies that rely on it. Still, the shift is coming fast enough that Google must start preparing now.

It was Apple (AAPL, news, msgs), a frequent Google collaborator, that tipped the trend. Consumer use of mobile Internet in the United States has longed trailed that of Asia and Europe, where standardized cell networks made it easier for handset makers to produce gadgets that tap the Web at blazingly fast speeds. But in the summer of 2007, Apple rocked America by launching the iPhone. The computer maker wasn't the first to put the Web on phones, but for many consumers, the iPhone made the experience more robust.

Almost two-thirds of Americans have had some experience with mobile Internet use, and the adoption trend is most pronounced among teens and young adults, according to Pew Research Center. About 60% of adults 18 to 29 use text messaging every day, compared with only 14% of their parents. Nearly one-third of young adults use mobile Internet. This is the future; people take their media habits with them as they age.

So, as Apple and demographic trends thrust the mobile Internet upon us, how will advertisers and we consumers of electronics respond?

Google will try to expand ad "shelf space," especially by redesigning cell-phone software. In November, Google announced it was launching an Open Handset Alliance to design a new operating system, code-named Android, which would provide a "truly open and comprehensive platform" for cell-phone users. A few scratched their heads as to why Google would get into the cell-phone interface business. But now it's clear: Web screens will soon be two inches wide, and Google wants a say in what fits on that tiny screen.

Our bet is that the new Android interface will encourage mobile device users to flick through multiple layers or pages, similar to the iPhone album-art menu. This would create more room for ads.

Expanding the visual ad inventory will be crucial for Google, as evidenced by the recent announcement that it will begin selling small display ads on cell-phone screens.
Another implication is that consumers may have to start paying for "free" stuff.

Sure, there's a lot that's free on the Web now, as many, including Chris Anderson of Wired, have noted. Yet, even Anderson notes that most "free" content models really just transfer the hidden cost from you to third-party advertisers, who subsidize your content in hopes of getting attention. If online social media such as Twitter, Facebook or Digg can't figure out ways to entice money from advertisers, they'll have to grab it from you.

Our hunch is that free content systems may stick to the big Web pages, where more ads can fit. For tiny screens, systems such as Twitter that work well in small detail will eventually have to charge, make money some other way or go away. Consumers push back on paying for something that is already free, so the only solution may be to keep ads very minimal -- and very personal.
Which brings us to one of the biggest implications of wider use of the mobile Web. Advertisers will increasingly rely on personalization.

Today, collections of Web sites known as ad networks track consumer behavior across multiple sites, and then shoot targeted ads to users. This behavioral targeting approach, found via WPP Group's (
WPPGY, news, msgs) 24/7 Real Media, Blue Lithium, Tremor Media and other Web networks, often results in ad response rates five to 10 times higher than standard banner ads.
Personalization works, and several companies are devising ways to make it work better.

Microsoft recently filed a patent application that would use offline data such as credit-card transactions, estimated physical location (from cell-phone towers) and TV viewing habits to serve you a customized ad the next time you go online. (Microsoft owns and publishes MSN Money.)

The fact that you bought cleats for your kids this morning, went to a high school football game in the afternoon and turned on ESPN when you got home would conceivably trigger a personalized sports ad on your cell phone.

ComScore (SCOR, news, msgs), the Web site ranking service, is taking a different approach, using "biometric signature" profiling to match the keystrokes and mouse-click patterns of different users on a single computer. The idea here is to get beyond the gadget to the individual user who touches it. The system can identify whether Dad or Mom or Sis is sitting at the keyboard, and then match the individual user with a rich profile of demographic data to improve ad targeting.

Pondering all this, we called Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, to see what concerns privacy groups might have about a future where marketers track your every move.

Personalization is actually a great idea," Rotenberg said, "but it should be done in a way that doesn't require detailed data collection" about an individual.

It's a nice hope -- that advertising and Google can survive in a world where the ways to reach consumers via glass screens grow smaller and smaller. But we suspect hyperintrusive data profiling is coming fast.

After all, Internet screens will soon be a lot smaller. And no company as rich or as smart as Google will give up so crucial a slice of sales without fighting back.

Where The Web Is Weak

By Andy Greenberg, Forbes.com

Tolstoy wrote that happy families are all alike, while every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. Something like the opposite might be said for Web sites. Many of the Web's millions of insecure pages can be hacked with just one or two tricks. But patching the bugs in each of those vulnerable sites requires a unique solution.

Case in point: Last month, a single attack ripped through the Web, infecting more than half a million sites including those of the Department of Homeland Security, the United Nations and the British Government. Using Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) searches, the attackers' software--written partly in Chinese characters--identified sites vulnerable to a hacking technique called SQL injection and infected them en masse with malware designed to steal the bank codes of the sites' visitors. (See " Google Hacking Goes to China.")

In late April, the sites hosting that malware were identified by security researchers who in turn notified the Chinese Internet service provider and had them disconnected from the Internet. But the job of cleaning up the Web's mess, says Jeremiah Grossman, the chief technology officer of White Hat Security, is far from over.

In fact, Grossman says that the majority of those sites remain vulnerable to the same attack. The typical SQL injection vulnerability, he says, takes a site's owner more than four months to locate and fix. That's because, unlike exploits that affect a typical software program, Web vulnerabilities can't be secured with an update downloaded from a vendor--every site has its own bug to excise.

"We can't issue a mass patch," says Grossman. "Each issue is unique. Together they present an almost catastrophic problem."

In Pictures: Eight Ways To Hack The Web

The 500,000 or so sites compromised in the latest attack are just a fraction of the threat to the Web. In a study released last February by Google, more than 3 million of the 60 million pages analyzed were found to invisibly download malicious software to users' computers. According to the study, about 1.3% of Google searches turned up at least one of those malicious pages, more than triple the percentage of malicious results from just eight months earlier.

The number of legitimate sites vulnerable to being hacked and corrupted with malware that infects visitors is far higher still. According to White Hat Security's most recent analysis of about a thousand major Web sites, 16% were vulnerable to SQL injection, an exploit based on mixing malicious commands with innocent user input to gain access to a site's server. Fully 65% of the sites analyzed were vulnerable to another exploit known as cross-site scripting, which can mix malicious elements into a legitimate site when a user clicks on a carefully crafted link.

Grossman has also repeatedly warned of another common Web vulnerability he calls a "sleeping giant." So-called "cross-site request forgery" can be used to steal information from many password-protected sites. If a Web user logs in to a Web service and then is tricked into visiting a compromised page, the second malicious page can steal the user's "cookies"--files collected by his browser used to verify his identity. Those identifying files give the coders of the malicious page temporary access to whatever sensitive information can be found on the password-protected site.

The persistence of vulnerabilities like these, says Johannes Ullrich, who teaches a class on Web vulnerabilities at the SANS Institute, is partly a cultural problem. To patch a vulnerability before it's exploited, an enterprise's security team has to convince Web developers to devote their resources to what may seem like a minor issue--but a big-time drain. Making fixes often involves wading through thousands of lines of code, Ullrich says, in some cases written by developers who left the company long ago.

Last month's massive round of SQL injections was the largest-ever round of malicious Web hackings, but hardly the first. Last February, the server hosting the Dolphin Stadium Web site was compromised just before the Superbowl began. In June, thousands of Italian-language sites were similarly targeted with SQL injections in an incident that security researchers now refer to as "the Italian Job." The same Internet service provider that hosted those sites was attacked again in early May, infecting another round of sites with malware designed to exploit users.

But securing the Web isn't just about protecting sites' visitors, Ullrich argues. It's also about protecting a company's own data. The attackers who used SQL injections to plant malware on hundreds of thousands of sites last month, for instance, could just as easily have stolen corporate data. "If the attackers hadn't left a trail by inserting malware on the sites, we probably wouldn't even have known that they had gained access to the databases," Ullrich says.

Even for a security conscious business, protecting against Web attacks isn't easy, Ullrich says. Because a Web page has to be accessible by all visitors, keeping out cybercriminals isn't as easy as building a firewall. "You can't block all visitors to your Web site. So quite frankly it comes down to the fact that only the code itself prevents an attacker from accessing your database," he says. "The Web is simply a very thin layer of defense."

Using A Spyware Removal Program

By Jason Hobbs

A spyware removal program is, naturally, a program designed to remove malicious spyware from a computer. Unfortunately we live with an online world where innocence and trust struggle to exist. There are many who would rather take what they can in any way they can. One way they do this is to spy on you from inside your own computer and steal whatever they can find. You may be surprised at just how easy it can be too.

Most of us with computers are connected to the Internet all the time or at least part of the time. This makes us potentially vulnerable to outside threats. Most of us know this so we install a firewall and email virus protection. For many of us that's enough. We don't have a spyware removal program. Occasionally the firewall tells us it has blocked a threat, and occasionally the virus protection picks up something nasty too. We feel safe.

Meanwhile, completely invisible to us, a spyware program has managed to intrude. It may be one of the less harmful ones, or it may be a very nasty one. Let's imagine it's a Trojan that can record every keystroke you make on the keyboard, and completely unaware of the situation you have decided to check your online bank balance...

You trust your online banking facility. You have a good username and password that no one is ever going to guess. You're right, but with a Trojan successfully implanted in your computer, they don't have to guess! When you type in your details the spyware program records it and passes the information to the owner of the program. Next time you check your bank balance you are in for a shock!

You need a spyware removal program in addition to a firewall and virus protection. In fact, you need several different spyware removal programs. Each one should be good at picking up different things. No one program is perfect, but several together can complement each other and pick up most of the spyware.

The best way to use a spyware removal program is to let it scan the system and report on what it finds. Expect it to find some spyware. It will probably be fairly harmless stuff, but get rid of it nevertheless. Then re-boot your system and scan again with the same program, deleting whatever it finds again. Do that until it reports the computer clean. Then start up a different spyware removal program and do the process all over again.

Yes, it takes a lot of time, but buying a new computer and setting it up the way you want it will take even more time and expense. That's what you'll end up doing if you let spyware run rampant, and it will if you don't do something about it.

None of the protection you have on your computer is perfect. The firewall will occasionally miss things. The virus protection will miss things too. It happens. You can help these programs by keeping all the definitions completely up to date at all times and scanning the system at regular intervals of no more than a week apart. It really is worth it.

How Do You Want To Advertise Online

By Tsuyoshi E. Suzuki

Online advertising is often more cost effective than offline media, where seconds of exposure on TV can sometimes cost a few thousand dollars. Banner advertising has been popular 10 years back. It is powerful and immediate. The internet has become an essential component of any ad campaign. It is growing more than traditional advertising, and includes both search marketing and search engine optimization, which both tap into consumers' seemingly limitless demands for finding information on the Internet. In one eMarketer forecast, search engine marketing alone is speculated to climb to almost $6.5 billion this year, and to reach more than $10 billion by 2009.

Real-time reporting can be queried on any campaign parameter. Ad networks are critical for aggregating audiences. But if they're disconnected from the rest of the market, they can hinder efficiency and profitability because they offer limited supply and demand. Its AdLearn technology, which maximizes advertising revenues across the network, learns from the results of previous campaigns and gets smarter with each advertisement placed.

Advertising cannot compete with sales promotion and direct marketing activities in generating short-term (less than one year) sales effects. But in the long-term, the cumulative force of good advertising. Adopting online advertising into the political marketing mix has been a long-term process. In 2007 and 2008 political campaigns reached a breakthrough, incorporating online advertising as part of their campaign equation from day one. Advertisers are also considering ways to send relevant ads to mobile phones, though many people want to get free data or free calls in return for watching ads on cell phones.

Search engines will forever be linked in a type of partnership arrangement with corporate websites, through what others say about your business online, and how your company name, brand, and website are displayed in the search engine results pages. This is even more of a true statement when considering many of the large companies have numerous divisions and/or separate websites each targeting a particular market segment. Search Engine Advertising is now the world's fastest-growing advertising market. This year in the both the United States and United Kingdom it will eclipse newspaper advertising in total ad spend. Search and other partner sites with the Sponsored Search program. Connects businesses and customers online.

Internet services grew and so did resources. What fell out was the business idea, companies that were not built on a lot of solid ground. Internet advertising exceeded $17 billion in 2005. It has now surpassed billboards, magazines and cable in spending. It grew at an annual clip of 18% from 2001-2006 and only cable TV (10%) was close to a double digit growth rate. Other channels basically kept pace with GDP growth (about 3%), with newspapers (1%) and radio (2%) most negatively affected.

Online advertising is widely regarded as the most effective direct response medium, and achieves higher response rates than traditional direct mail ad campaigns, for a fraction of the cost. It is about getting the right product in front of the right audience. It's about the ultra niche markets talking directly to their target client base.

Internet Marketing - Why is Web 2.0 Essential to Your Business?

By Daegan Smith

How many popular sites do you know? Do you have any reasons why they became what they are today? Web sites such as Flickr, Propeller, Digg, MySpace, StumbleUpon are the only few of the many sites popping all over Internet. Most of these sites tag any kind of content like audio, video, graphics, articles, photos, etc. The difference with these social bookmarking sites to a conventional search where you acquire inclusive results for key words, these sites produce results based upon what other people labeled and have crated their popularity by casting their votes. If your Internet marketing business uses Web 2.0, you'll likely gain a lot of members thereby increasing your profits.

How Web 2.0 improves your business?
Social interaction and bookmarking sites marked as Web 2.0 also include wikis, podcasting sites, blogging, and video sites. So what makes these sites used by a good number of people? Those sites differ from the rest because the content in them can all be user generated. Just like Flickr and Facebook. Like what happened to YouTube, when it was purchased by Google, the number of people who visit has greatly increased. Sites such as BlinkList, del.icio.us, or Scuttle allow you to tag web pages, blog posts and any other written content. Google Video and Flickr allows you to share your photos to other members of these sites.

How Web 2.0 works for your business?
For example, when you visit a Web 2.0 site and you observed a blog entry, do you notice that at the end of the post, there is a bookmarking button? When you become a member of sites like this one, you are required to complete your profile and allow you to post anything unless it breaks the site's rules. After your post, do you notice you are obliged to describe your post and tag the fitting keywords? Yes, that's how it basically works. When people look for information in search engines, tags are generally helpful. People find immediately the written content they may be looking for. In addition, what makes this sites so cool is that they are open to anyone who views them. Moreover, if you don't want any other people who can view your content, you could possibly do so by setting your profile to private.

Applying Web 2.0 to you Internet marketing business
Web 2.0 is indeed an amazing marketing method for your Internet marketing business. If you create your own Web 2.0 site, make sure your rules are properly imposed by all members so it continues to run and attract more people into visiting it. Or, if you wish to start your own internet marketing business immediately without creating your own Web 2.0 site, you may tag your posts and that of the others. Just make sure you follow the rules so you won't be banned from the site. When people look for key words and have found any of the words you tagged, they'll see your products and services. If these people purchase any one of what you sell, then you generate sales. What's more, it doesn't cost you anything. Thus, when you go about joining an Internet marketing business, make sure you are using Web 2.0. There are many people who seem so far at making their online business successful. That's because they are not using Web 2.0. Make sure you're not one of them.

Analyze Your Traffic Make You Succeed

By Tsuyoshi E. Suzuki

Internet marketing is becoming more sophisticated as the shopping audience increases and is spawning its own industry within the industry of the internet. Internet companies will use very sophisticated internet marketing techniques in an attempt to gain an edge over the competition and in order to attract visitors to the site. It is the process of promoting an organization using online media, typically with the goals of increasing sales and boosting profits.

Internet marketing does not simply mean building or promoting a website nor does it mean simply putting a banner ad up on another website. It is becoming the principal vehicle for this customer-contact process. Other traditional marketing activities still have a role but are often used in a complementary way to give maximum impact and return on the total effort.

Web analytics measures and analyzes the result of internet marketing efforts by studying trends, behaviour and improving productivity and search engine marketing effectiveness accordingly. By applying web analytics a company can monitor a website in order to increase their business performance and improve their site to include the needs and preferences that visitors are demanding.

Web design is an art that is the business of small and large enterprises alike. Designing a web site is more about creating a positive image of a company.

Web presence is therefore vital for bringing in the right visitors to your site. Websites claim you're going to make money online by setting up a website, throwing up an offer and some content and watching magical bucks start rolling in, but it is actually hard work and there's no such thing as "magic".

Effective search engine marketing is an ongoing process that needs to be monitored, analyzed and adjusted to match changes in both your business and the online environment. Effective Internet marketing is what drives websites to the top of major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN. For the first time, companies large and small are able to compete on a level playing field.

Millions of people are buying products and services on internet with the help of websites. So websites are now popular platforms for such sales generated on internet. Millions of people are starting home businesses and many are failing. Could it be their lack of marketing know-how that is causing their failure?

Internet marketing is hard, technical, detailed work. Internet Marketing is not easy to do. It is also by no means difficult. Internet marketing is the great equalizer!

The Secret To Success in Internet Marketing - Or Why You Might Not Be Successful

By David L Paul

Once again the ugly question has been posed to me from a would be internet millionaire- what is the real "trick" to making money. This was asked after I had just spent two whole days trying to impart information about websites and why you need one, getting traffic to your site, converting traffic into sales, and so on. I has frustrated me for years that the folks I try to help never seem to listen to what I am trying to tell them- instead they are always waiting for the "real secret", you know, the one that doesn't require education, experience, and hard work. Believe me, I've been looking for years, and there isn't any shortcut to success. Problem is, there are so many marketers and their minions screaming to the top of their lungs that you can "passively generate millions of dollars on autopilot" or "make 7,777 dollars a week while you walk the dog".

The noise that they generate makes my attempts at bringing reason to the mix sound like a whisper in a hurricane! But like a fool I keep trying. Why? Because I see the damage that is done every single day. I know it isn't what the average marketer wants to hear, but barring a few exceptions, you are going to have to work hard, be consistent, and probably spend considerable time before you will ever see any significant amount of money. I didn't make what I consider to be a living wage until my third year online. Now I will grant you that if I had to start all over again it would not take as long because I know how to do it now. The nature of the internet is one of hype, and almost always what you hear is either blown way out of proportion, or simply being repeated over and over by other marketers trying to jump on the easy money bandwagon.I know that many of you that read these words have experienced what I am talking about, and many of you still believe that there is easy money to be made with little or no work.

I would never want to try and discourage anyone from learning the hard way, so I won't spend a lot of time trying to dissuade you. Well, having said all of this, I want to talk about some good things, too. The internet is the only place that you can open a business for little or even no money. You can't even compare it to what it would take to open a brick and mortar business.
I've done that, and it takes a whole lot more time and work to get into the black, and then you still have to struggle to keep it up. Frankly, I never want to do it again! Another thing about the internet is that it enables communication and associations that would be very difficult or even impossible in the non-virtual world. And on top of all that, there really is good money to be made on the web. And let me boldly state that I have cracked the money making code! Just kidding.

The Consumers Rights in The Internet Transaction Shall Be Regulated

By Dilip Katariya

The existence of internet in the communication world cannot be avoided anymore. The sophisticated instrument used to be used by the United States Department of Defense in 1957 to communicate with its colleague has become a worldwide major communication instrument. It is hugely spreading and now almost the whole countries in the world are using and utilizing internet for communication. The major users of internet are the United States, Japan and China and they take the role in communication through internet. It is predicted that such three countries are dominating the internet users and it is equivalent to half of the world population.

The benefits of internet do not need to be questioned anymore. The facilities such as E-mail/Listserv/Mail Exploder; searching/web/ftp; Usenet and Newsgroup are very useful for the internet users to interact one to another, to socialize and communicate, and exchange information. But it is really unfortunate that those huge benefits are often to be misused by the internet users.

The crimes such as hackers, cyber talking, terrorism, fraud, theft especially for the banking data, personal data, Intellectual Property Rights, sabotage, harassment and denial of service are most crimes regularly happened. The motif are varies such as business, group and organization competition and interest, and hobby. In many cases the purpose is to get personal benefits. For an example the case of Steven Haryanto with wwwklikbca.com, klikbca.com, klickbca.com that have been deceived the consumers to conduct internet banking transactions. The purpose is simply to o steal the consumers' private data.

The internet misused indication is quite apprehensive. Steven's talent in creating misleading websites to hit and trap the careless BCA customers needs to be aware. What is Steven's aim and motif if it is not something related to the crime? Similar to such case, the false websites internet transactions offered fake fancy goods such as Rolex watches, branded bags, international trademark shoes and international books where the sellers expect the buyers to pay the sold goods with credit cards. Once the transaction and payment are completed but the purchased goods never been delivered.

From the survey that had been conducted by 12 world consumer organizations at the end of 1998 and 1999 reported that the negative factor of the internet transaction so far faced by the consumers is that one of ten from the ordered goods never been accepted by the consumers.

Another case is that 2 buyers from England and Hong Kong had waited for more than 5 years to get the refund from the seller. Further that nearly 73% of the sellers failed to fulfill the contract in the internet transactions and 25% of the sellers do not mention their addresses and telephone numbers in the internet transaction. The result is that the consumers will be harmed then where the consumers should report it to?

The crimes in the internet world are happened so often but up until today Indonesia still has not tried to give any legal protection towards the consumers. On the other side the information and technology developments have made the internet using be greater. If the legal protection is still very low then the crimes are going to be increased continuously in the future.

We should realize that in an internet transaction, the internet users or consumers expect that there is a law and legal order. The buyers wish that there is no false advertisement or websites spreading around that finally could damage their interests in the transaction. On the other side the sellers in internet also have the same principle that there will be law and legal order in conducting the internet businesses. Therefore it can be concluded that the sellers and buyers are expecting the certainty of law and trading through the websites world in order to have the both parties equal rights and duties.

The legal certainty for internet field in Indonesia has not been realized yet. It continuously happens since there is no valid rule governs the interests of the businessman and consumers.
For a developed country such as England, they already have a protection model towards the consumers especially for the internet transactions. One of them is Distance Selling Regulation 2000 that governs the consumers' rights in the internet transactions. The Article 7 Paragraph 1 stipulated that the suppliers/businessmen are obligated to provide the information to the consumers in a proper time before conducting any transaction.

The information contains the identity of the businessman, term of delivery, price, payment system and the most important thing is that the consumer has the right to cancel the transaction, except for special terms as mentioned in the Article 13 of the regulation for example that the price of goods is fluctuated based on the market. How is about the protection towards the consumers in Indonesia? We only could be patient and wait for the realization.

Internet Marketing Tips - Internet Marketing Versus The Rest Of The World

By Steven Wagenheim

For those of you making a living online, or trying to, and deciding whether to tackle the "make money" niche or something else, this article may just help make up your mind. I am going to reveal some startling facts that will definitely have you thinking about whether or not you want to tackle the hard to crack niche of Internet marketing to marketers.

Okay, let's get right down to the facts. I write a lot of articles for Internet marketing. However, I also write articles for other niches as well. Now, if you've written for Ezine Articles in particular, you know that you get to see how many views each of your articles has, as well as how many articles you actually have out there. Well, these numbers may astound you. I have four times as many Internet marketing articles as I do articles for other niches and yet, my other niche articles get more views per day than my Internet marketing articles by a ratio of three to two.

Let's really examine this because it's important. Four times as many articles, yet only two thirds as many views. Why do you think that is? The answer is going to surprise you, though it shouldn't. See, whether you want to believe it or not, not everybody who has a computer and comes online wants to make a living on the Internet. The truth is, the percentage is very small.
However, the number of people who come online everyday who have health problems, or financial problems or some other kind of problem, far outnumber the Internet marketers. My own personal results are living proof of this, and I make a fine living with Internet marketing to marketers.

The point is this. There is a huge world out there that does not revolve around Internet marketing. Think about all the things that you do on a daily or weekly basis. You buy food, clothes, newspapers. You watch TV, listen to the radio, play CDs and DVDs. You go to movies.

You drive cars. You go to the doctor for a checkup. And yes, maybe you do have health problems that they can't seem to fix and maybe you're looking for some info online that will help. Maybe you want to buy a new camcorder and you're looking for a review online for a particular brand.

Everything I have mentioned above, which doesn't even scratch the surface, has the potential to be turned into a money making business. So before you jump into the "sell money making products to money makers" niche...consider one of the millions of niches you could probably do much better in.

You Can Make Money Online
You can begin to earn internet income with ease. I have made money online and I am still receiving income on the internet. I was given the impression that I would not earn dollars on the net unless I had a domain name and a website that was professionally built up and well maintained. Some other people said I could have an internet presence totally free. I choose to believe the latter and acted on my belief and I made money on the internet. I still do.

Fastest Way to Internet Income
The fastest way to internet income if you do not have your own product is to join affiliate programs. There are many affiliate programs on the internet marketing diverse products to potential buyers. Join the ones you have affinity with their products, either through use or knowledge of their industry. Joining affiliate programs is one way towards making you richer on the internet because the products you will market are not new to users and in most cases, they are world-class products. You might just be the person to convince the buyer to whip out his credit card to order the product and enable you earn your first commission online.

How to Boost your Internet Income
Registering for affiliate programs and doing nothing else will hardly make money for you. You need to sensitize potential target audience about the existence of such product by advertising your affiliate links. You can do it through pay per click advertising. You can also market your presence through writing articles with your links included. There are other methods of online awareness but they are beyond the scope of this work. I started marketing my affiliate links through setting up blogs at blogger.com and wordpress.com. I still have the first blog I set up on blogger.com which is still doing well.

I populated the blogs with free articles from free articles directories and also decorated the blogs with banners provided by the affiliate programs I registered with. Breaking through was hard but I did it and made sales commissions. I also went ahead to use free websites which I still have.

I have since graduated to making more internet riches through residual income. I have also employed my own paid websites and also pay per click adverts to enable me expand my financial horizon. I am making more profit now and you can too. Take action and stop procrastinating and you will soon make your own money online and make yourself richer.

Live Your Dream - Make Money On The Internet

By Paul Jesse

Sure, we all want the best, we all want more, but how can we do that? Do you keep working at the same job day in and day out? Should we continue to work for another person? Many people today are answering no, to both questions. You may be like thousands of others and are ready to live your dream and start your very own business. If you want to make money online at home, you have to take the right steps to do so.

The internet is a vast expanse, therefore, you can take the skills you already have and create a business for yourself. For instance, if you are an artist, you should consider web design or graphic design as a business venture. This of course will require some software skills, but can be learned if you have the right skills in the first place. Those who make crafts as a hobby often find that their crafts can be sold on places such as eBay, for a profit as well. At the same time, many multi level marketing businesses allow you to sell and market their products to make a profit of your own.

You have many different roads to take on your path to understanding how you can work from home online. Your success will be determined by your level of knowledge in making it happen. You might have the skills to create fabulous crafts or graphics; however, simply knowing how to make the product or provide the service isn't enough. The internet is so large and filled with other people, just like you, that are trying to make their way that you have to be able to compete with them at the same time.

The services or products is the first step to creating your own internet business, however, you must also market, advertise, and work extremely hard to make it work. The first step to any internet business is having a website, whether you create the website yourself or have one created for you, it is crucial.

You have choices, you can either start an online business to supplement the income you currently make or you can go full force, start your own business and finally fire your boss. Either way, you can make money on the internet. Success is not something that is easy to accomplish, there are several factors that work together to determine your success. Things such as your personal investment, with energy and time, services, products, website, and marketing.

It is not something that is going to be quick or immediately. If you are looking to make money on the internet, it is going to take some hard work and commitment. You have to be able to compete with others doing the same thing and find success.

Internet Dating Online - Don't Make These 3 Mistakes

By Daryl Campbell

To say that online dating is changing the relationship process is an understatement. While no one believes that it will completely replace the offline meeting places of bars, nightclubs and everyday environments, the benefits of internet dating online are quickly surpassing the traditional dating rituals. From the privacy of your own computer, you can specify the exact type of person you are looking for, get a plethora of individuals to choose from and chat extensively to find out if the two of you have compatibility. If not then you move on the next one. All without having to buy more drinks or waste gas.

Is it really possible to find that special someone? According to Online Dating Magazine there are now over 120,000 marriages per year that are a direct result of online dating. If you are looking for a long term relationship, dating online can be a terrific resource. However like anything else, it must be used properly. That is why you must do your best to avoid the following mistakes:

1. Insistence
You are anxious to meet the other person. They on the other hand are taking it a bit more slowly. While it is possible to find a happy median, being too aggressive is not the way to go. It can come across as obnoxious and scary. Insistence on arranging a face to face meeting may cause the other person's alarm to go off. In turn, they might come to the conclusion that it is better to be safe than sorry and cutoff all contact with you. Play it smart and be patient.

2. Perfection...NOT!
The word perfection should only apply to taking an exam. When it comes to relationships there is no such thing, No matter how long or hard someone tries to get something perfect it will never happen. You do the best you can and move on. If you expect perfection out of your self you are going to run into occasional disappointments but expecting flawlessness from a potential online dating partner is a formula for disaster. The other person is not going to answer all of your questions exactly like you want them to because there is no such thing as one hundred percent compatibility. Expecting perfection is not realistic and you are only setting yourself up for a failure if you want to go that route. Online or off you must be ready to accept the humanity of the other person and that includes their difference of opinion on certain topics.

3. Lying
No matter how small or insignificant you consider it, lying is still lying and trying to build a relationship on it spells trouble. Yes you want to make your dating profile and your online chats interesting but you can do that without deceiving the other person. One of the great positives and negatives of online dating is the anonymity it provides. Some people have taken that to mean they can exaggerate or tell a blatant falsehood when it suits them. Guess what? In the overwhelming majority of cases, the truth always comes out. So be straight with the other person. After all, you would not be thrilled if you found out they were also lying.

Online dating has so much to offer and it can be lot of fun as long as you keep certain things in mind. Stay away from being overly aggressive, expecting perfection from the other person (and yourself) and lying about who you really are. Keep these things in mind and just maybe you will find that special someone in cyber space.

Internet Dating - Testing Internet Dating Sites

By Michael R White

After much experience with various Internet dating sites I have decided to coin the term "profilebot". This term is used to name small computer programs that are written to either create Internet dating profiles or to send emails en mass to trial members on the site.

Since the annual amount spent on Internet dating is increasing each year lots of people want to get a slice of that profit margin pie. The problem is competition. How can a new Internet dating site compete against the bigger more established ones? Getting clicks is only the beginning.
Having a large member base is an important element so why not create a small piece of software that trawls the Internet for profile information and copys it to create hundreds of profiles to increase the size and therefor strength of a new site.

I strongly believe that this practice although misleading is common place on some Internet dating sites. One of the major problems for new sites is the lack of "women seeking men" profiles and the influx of "men seeking women" profiles. This is common on most Adult Sites. So the profilebot technique is fast and efficient way to remedy this and even the apparent stakes for the potential market of male paying members.

Also because so many sites can be a complete waste of time most guys who don't have money to burn will sign up for the free trial and see if the site looks promising. But what next? If a guy is not getting any emails from the female members why would he become a full paying member? He would not, but if he started getting emails from all sorts of interesting and sexy women then he would probably sign up straight away.

This being said imagine the temptation of a site owner who has poured all of his/her money into a site in the hope it yields a slice of that huge annual Internet dating market pie. But it's sitting there without many paying members.

Wouldn't it be tempting to create a profilebot that starts emailing seductive messages to all those lonely guys in the hope that they sign up to respond. They would sign up immediately and begin responding to those messages! And the cash would start pouring in.

The way to test it is to simply open a free trial member account. Don't fill out any of the fields at all. Just enter a user name, age and city. No photo, no blurb. Leave it for a couple of weeks. If the site in question is using a variation of the profilebot technique then in a few weeks you should have a bunch of emails from supposed female users. I have tested this on a few sites and found that this or a similar variation must be true.

Another question to ask is can you reply to paying member without signing up if they contact you? The most reputable site allow this function because they know their system works and they are getting good business due this very fact.

In most cases these "female users" will be hot to trot and totally gorgeous. To good to be true in fact. The funniest part is when the email says " I really like your picture" thats when you know the message has been falsely generated. Because there's no picture on that profile.

If you understand all the different time wasters in the Internet dating world then you have a shot at making it work for you If you use this test on an Internet Dating Site then you have a better chance of finding the site thats going to yeild the best results for you!

Children & Internet Safety

By Kelly Liyakasa

As children and teens use the Internet more than ever before, parents continue to face potential problems arising from the trend. Stories highlighting issues affecting teens and kids alike run rampant on television news channels. We've all heard of the potential risks attached with youngsters using sites like MySpace and Friendster, such as predators obtaining personal information or even classmates bullying someone via their online profile. Plenty of studies and recent industry reports indicate the browsing habits of youth and their parents' concerns.

• Over 60% of teens ages 13-17 report having a profile on a social networking site.

• Nearly half of teens with profiles were asked to share personal information with someone they didn't know personally.

• Over 50% of parents feel the Internet mainly has positive impacts on their kids.

• About 70% of teens have unintentionally encountered adult content when surfing the Web.

• Only 1 in 4 teens who received inappropriate messages online alerted a parent or guardian.

• Nearly half of parents surveyed don't check out what their children type in chat rooms or instant messages

• Over half of parents surveyed don't have or don't know if parental control and monitoring software is installed on their PC's.

6StarReviews.com reports that parental control software is a viable means for concerned parents to regulate what goes in and out of their PC's. Net Nanny, for example, blocks all adult content and allows parents to fully monitor where their child surfs and what they're saying in chat rooms or instant messages.

Child Safe, another popular product, is not only simple to use, you can have comprehensive Internet usage reports emailed right to you. Though monitoring your child or teen's activity is beneficial, it's still important to allow them some leeway and discuss Web safety in terms they will understand.

Website Hosting And Internet Consulting - How To Pick The Best

By Shawn Mitchell

When looking for a website hosting and Internet consulting company, keep in mind that there are very few companies that will offer both of these services rolled into one. Quite simply, your need for website hosting is much different than what you need for Internet consulting. In internet consulting, this usually deals with such things as Internet marketing, such as advertising, how to get traffic to your site, etc.

Also, read reviews about them on the Internet by customers who've both use them in the past and are currently using them, and find out about their customer service and also how secure their servers are.

Quite simply, even if you do get a virtual Private server for dedicated hosting with some companies, their servers are not very secure, and you still are at risk. The best way to find this out is to read reviews.

The internet has proven to be a very reliable source in finding what was deemed to be a very unreachable product. The Internet has made the world a smaller place; you can advertise a product or service from the depths of a small village and still find a buyer from the corner of the world who is some millions of mails away from you.

Some of the best proven and working methods, programs and strategies to earn residual income are described below:

Affiliate Program
This is one of the great mechanism and program that's available over internet to make money working part-time right from your computer desk. It is a kind of marketing product or service of other companies or people whom even you don't know and whom you may ever not even meet face-to-face.

The basic idea is the visitors of your advertisement or website will reach the another website from your link that can offer a product or service using this affiliate program business.

When purchases are made by customers that was led by your advertisement or website to their site you get a percentage of that sale. Affiliate programs would give you the benefit of magnetizing your ad or web visitors without the actual need of carrying or promoting a certain product / service.

How to Start Affiliate Program Business
There are two ways to gain from affiliate program business, one of that can be of your own product or service to offer on the Internet and the other one is that you join as a affiliate for someone's product or service that can make you earn residual income.

When can you would start your own affiliate program? Well, imagine instead of you trying to master various traffic generation strategies by yourself, you unleashed a bundle of affiliates to do the driving for you! And starting an affiliate program may or may not as hard as one might think. It is quite easy at affiliate network websites such as Clickbank.com., if you are going to give them the tools and information to be successful.

The merchant owner gets the opportunity to advertise his product or service to a far larger market than possible through just his / her own efforts. By having more affiliates the product owner has greater sales and this increases earnings and getting affiliates to market that can save time, effort, and money.

However, the most advisable approach would be you prefer to be an affiliate for someone who can simply give you an affiliate link with a great product and a great plan for success similar to what you can see at Affiliate Program business source by Our Effort.

You just need links to start making money. Promoting other's services and products is not something that is difficult to do. However, you will find that with all of the many companies that offer affiliate programs, and referral options, they all have their own rules that you must follow.

Affiliate Program marketer is defined as a business relationship with a merchant or other service provider who allows you to link to that business. When a visitor clicks on the link at your site and subsequently makes a purchase from the merchant, you receive a commission based on the amount of the sale, a referral fee or a pay-for-click fee. This is a simple, straight forward agreement between a merchant and an affiliate.

Many people, who are just getting started in affiliate marketing, fail to take the steps necessary to get to the end of the process which actually make money. This leads to people giving up early, and putting their goals of making money online to the back burner. The affiliate marketer will never be a successful affiliate marketer if they do not first understand the steps one must take to get the end result, which is a monthly earnings.

An Affiliate Program marketer should necessary take certain steps to be a successful affiliate business. Some of these steps will help you understand what it takes to go from the bottom to the top, and will keep you on track of successful affiliate program business.

First of all, knowledge is the key foundation - the building blocks to success. Start by gathering the best information you can find about affiliate program marketing and absorb the knowledge. Even the best information remains kind of worthless, however, until after you discover how to use it and gain the knowledge on how to make it serve your purpose.

Second, Start applying the knowledge, take action, and start building your affiliate business. You may make mistakes, even though you have invested the time and money. However, you will learn from your mistakes as time goes on.

Third, Test and fine-tune, test and fine-tune. This one never ends. And it's often the divider line between success and failure. Attention to small details often returns big rewards.

Fourth, follow the rules of the game to be a successful affiliate program marketer. Affiliate Program marketing rules can be so very different. They can range from not mentioning the brand names that they sell anywhere on your website, to not have that particular market in your website URL. Because, they are so different for each program and company that you promote, you are going to have to be sure that you read each one well and make sure that you understand it fully. If you all ready have your URL for your website, you may not be able to participate in some of the affiliate programs. This is because you will not meet the requirements for the rules.

Another rule that you are going to see often when you are into affiliate marketing is the page rank rule. Some of the companies that will allow you to promote their services or products will not want you to have a higher page rank than they do. Nor will they allow you to have a website that is higher in the search engine rankings.

Fifth, find a best affiliate marketing software. If you can find a program that fits your needs and will help you keep everything straight, you may not have to worry about keeping track of them yourself. Use your software to keep track and make sure that you are doing your affiliate marketing the right way.

Internet experts estimate The World Wide Web is growing by over one million pages a day as more and more people come online and utilize it for all their day-to-day requirements.

Anyone can make money on the internet if you just have the desire and knowledge of the right internet marketing tools that provide the highest return on investment.

Last but not least, do not take on a product that you personally do not believe in or think is a good deal. You will not promote it effectively and will not be doing yourself or your merchant any favors.

Do a little research; there are several affiliate networks that can provide information on the most profitable products and best paying merchants such as Clickbank, Commission Junction, ShareaSale, to name a few good place to start.

Once you get people coming to your site or advertisement you are starting your own list whom you can promote other products too. This is not instant; however it will build over time giving you a tidy income.

Why Internet Marketing Means Nothing

By Ivan Piskov

Internet marketing is very popular term and it sounds very pompous: 'I am an Internet marketing expert'. Yeah, all rise!

Actually it means nothing concrete and that's why it is so easy (and so useless) to write about it.
There is no such business called internet marketing. People are making money from adsense, from affiliate programs, from email advertising, from e-stores, auctions, surveys, dropshipping and more in countless forms using countless mix of marketing techniques and all these online activities can be described with this one term internet marketing.

When someone is selling, or recommending, or advertising or just writing about any kind of product or service on the internet, depending on the marketing channel or the technique applied, this marketer is practicing only a single part of All available internet marketing strategies and methods.

So, what practical meaning has all mentioned above?

Don't waste your time with internet marketing tips, tools, experts, articles, directories and so on. Find your specific talents and improve on what attracts you the most: if you are a math guy - try SEO, if you are communicative type - jump on blogging, email and writing, if you are type of a techy guy - development and scripts might be your online area, if painting is your passion - welcome to web design and so on.

Don't build a website using internet marketing in the title - you can build such an authority website only to collect inbound links and then pass on Google Page Rank upon family of connected sub sites, but this strategy is a bit complicated, so better avoid it in the beginning of your online activity.

Don't use the term internet marketing in your paid advertising - it's too broad and you'll get highly untargeted traffic and close to zero sales. You know it, but I will just repeat it: the money is in the small niches.

Don't be jealous if you are not mentioned as an 'internet marketing expert' on some meaningless list or an article. Make yourself known as a seo-expert, master-copywriter or top-class programmer because such niche guys have the fattest bank accounts while most of the self proclaimed 'experts' are just talking about money.

Find your passion and learn how to make a substantial web business out of it. Develop your own unique style in what you are doing and success will not pass you by.

Home Internet Business Opportunities - Respect the Newbie

By David Kahan

First of all if you have read any of my previous articles or blog posts I really despise the word “newbie.” For those of you that happen to be newbies, (a slang term for a newcomer to online gaming or an Internet activity) this article should make you feel more confident when dealing with those individuals, or nobies (my new term for NO experience) that may be knocking at your door and kicking the tires of your new online venture to see if you are the right one for them to be in business with. You see, what they don’t understand is that there will come a time that they jump into an internet business venture and have absolutely no clue what they are doing. With that thinking in mind, they have no right judging you for your lack of experience, after all, you must have some knowledge of internet marketing or they would never have found you. This article is dedicated to all newbies that deserve a lot of respect for at least making the decision to start or get involved with an online business venture.

As a newcomer to an internet business venture you will come across many “offerings” that will claim to make your lives easier, make you more money, automate “the” process, etc. But what you need to keep in mind is the basics of internet marketing to get your website exposed to the masses. Granted, getting started may seem to be the hardest thing to do initially, but keeping it simple with article marketing, blog posts, good anchor text or key word links to your website, will make your life easier and make you look like a seasoned internet marketing veteran to the new person looking at your site. Remember, there will come a time that people will start to contact you regarding your venture and however they found you is only important to one person, yourself. You have now taken the basic steps to get your site noticed and again, that is all that matters. When Mr/Mrs newbie asks how long you have been with your business, the only answer necessary is “long enough to understand how to drive people to my website.” Or you can also reverse their question, by asking them if they are new to your type of business.

That way you can tell them that you have a marketing system in place that is easy to follow and designed to drive people to any website. Newcomers to the online marketplace are only looking for direction and a mentor they feel comfortable working with. Likely your initial phone contact with them will be more important than if you know how to market your business. Remember marketing online is not only a learning process, but everyone (almost) has to start with the basics of marketing and build on that. Let me also remind you that only a small percentage of internet businesses survive, usually due to a lack of focus goals and persistence. Again, the importance of what you know and how to get someone else started is much more important than how long you have been involved.
