Where The Web Is Weak

By Andy Greenberg, Forbes.com

Tolstoy wrote that happy families are all alike, while every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. Something like the opposite might be said for Web sites. Many of the Web's millions of insecure pages can be hacked with just one or two tricks. But patching the bugs in each of those vulnerable sites requires a unique solution.

Case in point: Last month, a single attack ripped through the Web, infecting more than half a million sites including those of the Department of Homeland Security, the United Nations and the British Government. Using Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) searches, the attackers' software--written partly in Chinese characters--identified sites vulnerable to a hacking technique called SQL injection and infected them en masse with malware designed to steal the bank codes of the sites' visitors. (See " Google Hacking Goes to China.")

In late April, the sites hosting that malware were identified by security researchers who in turn notified the Chinese Internet service provider and had them disconnected from the Internet. But the job of cleaning up the Web's mess, says Jeremiah Grossman, the chief technology officer of White Hat Security, is far from over.

In fact, Grossman says that the majority of those sites remain vulnerable to the same attack. The typical SQL injection vulnerability, he says, takes a site's owner more than four months to locate and fix. That's because, unlike exploits that affect a typical software program, Web vulnerabilities can't be secured with an update downloaded from a vendor--every site has its own bug to excise.

"We can't issue a mass patch," says Grossman. "Each issue is unique. Together they present an almost catastrophic problem."

In Pictures: Eight Ways To Hack The Web

The 500,000 or so sites compromised in the latest attack are just a fraction of the threat to the Web. In a study released last February by Google, more than 3 million of the 60 million pages analyzed were found to invisibly download malicious software to users' computers. According to the study, about 1.3% of Google searches turned up at least one of those malicious pages, more than triple the percentage of malicious results from just eight months earlier.

The number of legitimate sites vulnerable to being hacked and corrupted with malware that infects visitors is far higher still. According to White Hat Security's most recent analysis of about a thousand major Web sites, 16% were vulnerable to SQL injection, an exploit based on mixing malicious commands with innocent user input to gain access to a site's server. Fully 65% of the sites analyzed were vulnerable to another exploit known as cross-site scripting, which can mix malicious elements into a legitimate site when a user clicks on a carefully crafted link.

Grossman has also repeatedly warned of another common Web vulnerability he calls a "sleeping giant." So-called "cross-site request forgery" can be used to steal information from many password-protected sites. If a Web user logs in to a Web service and then is tricked into visiting a compromised page, the second malicious page can steal the user's "cookies"--files collected by his browser used to verify his identity. Those identifying files give the coders of the malicious page temporary access to whatever sensitive information can be found on the password-protected site.

The persistence of vulnerabilities like these, says Johannes Ullrich, who teaches a class on Web vulnerabilities at the SANS Institute, is partly a cultural problem. To patch a vulnerability before it's exploited, an enterprise's security team has to convince Web developers to devote their resources to what may seem like a minor issue--but a big-time drain. Making fixes often involves wading through thousands of lines of code, Ullrich says, in some cases written by developers who left the company long ago.

Last month's massive round of SQL injections was the largest-ever round of malicious Web hackings, but hardly the first. Last February, the server hosting the Dolphin Stadium Web site was compromised just before the Superbowl began. In June, thousands of Italian-language sites were similarly targeted with SQL injections in an incident that security researchers now refer to as "the Italian Job." The same Internet service provider that hosted those sites was attacked again in early May, infecting another round of sites with malware designed to exploit users.

But securing the Web isn't just about protecting sites' visitors, Ullrich argues. It's also about protecting a company's own data. The attackers who used SQL injections to plant malware on hundreds of thousands of sites last month, for instance, could just as easily have stolen corporate data. "If the attackers hadn't left a trail by inserting malware on the sites, we probably wouldn't even have known that they had gained access to the databases," Ullrich says.

Even for a security conscious business, protecting against Web attacks isn't easy, Ullrich says. Because a Web page has to be accessible by all visitors, keeping out cybercriminals isn't as easy as building a firewall. "You can't block all visitors to your Web site. So quite frankly it comes down to the fact that only the code itself prevents an attacker from accessing your database," he says. "The Web is simply a very thin layer of defense."

Making Social Sites Safer

By Wendy Tanaka, Forbes.com

Maggie didn't always feel safe on MySpace. The 17-year-old New Rochelle, N.Y., resident used to receive lewd instant messages from a man who found her on the popular social networking site.

But after making a few changes to her profile recently, Maggie, who asked us not to publish her last name, got rid of the perpetrator and reclaimed her sense of security on the site. "I blocked the person's screen name, reported him on MySpace, changed my age to 99 and made my profile private," she says.

These small, common-sense actions can make a huge difference in safety on social networks, experts say. MySpace, Facebook and other social networks advocate taking such measures and post safety guidelines on their sites. While the majority of people on social networks are safe, a few high-profile cases of sexual predators and cyberbullying, such as the Missouri teen who committed suicide in 2006 after receiving taunting comments on her MySpace page, have prompted the industry to seek more ways to keep users out of harm's way.

At the behest of 49 states and the District of Columbia, MySpace in January agreed to implement a number of new safety policies. So far, MySpace has taken several steps, including creating an online tutorial to help parents better understand social networking and adding a software tool that allows parents to determine if their teens have a MySpace profile. In May, Facebook agreed to similar measures to make its site safer.

See: "Seven Tips For Keeping Kids Safe Online"

MySpace, the world's largest social network with more than 117 million monthly users, also created a task force to develop age and identity verification technology to protect minors from inappropriate behavior and content. In February, the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School was selected to head the task force, and two dozen other companies and organizations, including Facebook, Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ), Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) and the Progress and Freedom Foundation, joined the initiative.

The task force, which is working on recommending identity verification technologies that can be used in the industry, has met twice so far. The discussions have centered on whether identity technologies can make social sites safer, or whether consumer education works best. State attorneys general believe more technological solutions are necessary, but some task force members contend that identity technologies on the market aren't adequate. And even if they were better, they likely can't prevent every unwanted incident and they could block contact between friends and relatives.

"So, if he's 16 and she's 21, they shouldn't talk? Maybe they're brother and sister," says Adam Thierer, a senior fellow at the Progress and Freedom Foundation.

Thierer also says that too many checks and restrictions could turn off users and hamper advertising on social networks. "There's only so far the sites can go before undermining their business and cutting off their customer base," he says. "At some point, it becomes an annoyance for users."

Both Facebook and MySpace, however, say safety improvements should make their sites more attractive to advertisers. "It makes users loyal and advertisers want to come to our site," says Chris Kelly, chief privacy officer at Facebook.

MySpace Chief Security Officer Hemanshu Nigam agrees that advertisers like secure sites. "Every advertiser wants to make sure its brand isn't tarnished on a particular site," he says.

The focus on identity technologies makes the assumption that sexual predators are the biggest safety problems for social networks, but cyberbullying is far more common. According to a recent report in the journal Pediatrics, a third of children age 10 to 15 said they have been verbally harassed online, while half as many reported being sexually solicited.

Larry Magid, co-director of task force member ConnectSafely.org, an Internet safety site for families, says most children who get involved with sexual predators understand the situation. "It appears that kids who do get in trouble with predators are high-risk kids," he says. "In one way or another, they are seeking out this attention."

Magid and Thierer say there should be more consumer education to prevent cyberbullying and more common-sense practices to ensure greater safety on social sites. "There are no easy technical fixes for complex human behavioral problems," Thierer says. "We need to teach kids 'Netiquette.' "

Parry Aftab, a former Internet lawyer who now runs WiredSafety.org, another task force member, says it's too early to say how the task force will handle all these issues. "It's going to take us a little while to gather everything together," she says. "When you're dealing with social issues, everyone comes at it with his own perspective. The most important thing to come out of this is a reality check: this is important, this isn't. Do a lay of the land and here's where we go."

Top 10 April Fools' Day Joke Web Sites

By Scott Spanbauer, PC World

Normally staid sites and individuals celebrate April 1 with weird, silly and elaborate hoax pages. Here are our favorite pranks of years past. Will anything make the list in 2008?

What is it about April Fools' Day jokes that we love so much? Perhaps it's that, in the midst of the crushing influx of information that many of us cope with daily, a well-constructed prank provides a welcome break. For a moment, we smile, even when the joke is a tried-and-true chestnut.Google has a strong tradition of sublime hilarity each April 1. Last year, the company announced two faux products designed to elicit a chuckle from unsuspecting (and suspecting) readers: Gmail Paper (6GB of messages, rendered as hard copy) and Google TiSP, a plumbing-based Internet service provider dedicated to harnessing the underutilized potential of the nation's "dark porcelain." (See PC World Senior Writer Tom Spring's complete slide show for a retrospective of Google's April Fools' and other fun inventions over the years.)In recent times, many other sites have pulled our collective leg with April Fools' pages marked by realistic graphics and ridiculous but deadpan copy. Here are 10 of our favorites. Just click the linked header for each entry to see the prank (or its fallout) come to life.

10. Facebook Funnies
Last year, Facebook users noticed some unusual entries scattered among News Feed updates, including the announcement of a new LivePoke feature, which invited users to dispatch a real live person to physically poke their Facebook friends (offer limited to first 100 members of a network). Another entry reported that Harry (Potter, not PC World's editor-in-chief McCracken) and Voldemort (more of a MySpace kind of guy anyway) had returned to their former relationship status as mortal enemies. Good work guys, and better luck next year on moving up our list.

9. Dead Fairy on eBay
In late March 2007, Dan Baines posted a Web page describing (and illustrating with detailed photos) the discovery of what appeared to be the remains of a "real" fairy. Baines claimed that the mummified fairy corpse was recovered along an old Roman road in Derbyshire, England, by a dog-walker who preferred to remain anonymous. The bones of its diminutive, humanlike skeleton were hollow, like a bird's, making it "particularly light," an anatomical peculiarity whose contribution to airworthiness was enhanced by the body's extremely leaflike -- uh, lifelike -- wings.

Over the next several days Baines, a magician and prop-maker, received hundreds of messages from credulous and (and in some instances worried) fairy-loving readers. To put their minds at ease, he revealed the hoax. Eventually Baines sold his creation on eBay for £280.

8. PodShave and PodShaveLady
Sometimes, a prank's premise is so plausible that you have to ask yourself: "Why isn't there a product like that?" When iLounge posted breaking news of a new video-playing iPod V from Apple on March 31, 2004, no one took the bait. The real video iPod, which was just around the corner, made too much sense for the iPod V prank to be funny. But wags at the now-defunct PodGear.net had more success with their electric-razor attachments for iPod Classic or Mini. Several Apple news sites, including PC World's sister publication Macworld, posted tongue-in-cheek reviews of these ersatz iPod accessories, leaving many wondering, "Does my back hair need grooming -- and can I dance to it?"

7. Wikipædia Brittanica
If we can believe Wikipedia's own Wiki page on the subject (at first unqualified, but subsequently clearly labeled as a joke), the popular user-created reference site was nearly absorbed by venerable dead-tree competitor Encyclopædia Britannica on April 1, 2005. Despite the promise of handsome severance packages for the founders of what was slated to become known as Wikimædia, the deal likely fell through -- perhaps due to the onerous financial burden it would have placed on contributors to the newly merged publications. Though future costs were estimated at an astronomical £99.97 for each page creation or edit, the new Wikipædia promised to offset them by offering contributors a chance to win a rare photo of Margaret Thatcher from her days on the burlesque circuit.

6. Water on Mars
NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day tends to be a beautiful high-resolution image of a far-off nebula, one of the moons of Saturn, or perhaps a comet streaking through the heavens. But the most startlingly unexpected image in the Astronomy Picture of the Day archive may be a photograph dated April 1, 2005, that conclusively establishes the presence of water on Mars.In other space-related news, alert readers of the ordinarily factual Space Daily news site were surprised to learn on the same day that President Bush had canceled the Space Shuttle program.
5.
Animated Tattoos
It was only a matter of time before someone achieved a technological breakthrough to lift body art above its humble drunken-sailor beginnings. That breakthrough was announced and documented on April 1, 2006, when the trusted HowStuffWorks Web site revealed the secret behind the animated tattoo -- the Programmable Subcutaneous Visible Implant (PSVI).

Warning: The article's graphic photos of the PSVI implantation procedure are definitely not for the squeamish.

Buoyed by the article's success, HowStuffWorks followed it up last April with another behind-the-scenes look at tech implantation: How Cell-Phone Implants Work.

4. Indescribably Geek-elicious
ThinkGeek, the Web-based retailer of "Stuff for Smart Masses," usually observes April Fools' Day by posting new products that not only serve as a catalyst for mirth, but often defy the laws of physics. Starting in 2002 with the Desktop Zero-Point Power Generator, which converted abundant and "naturally occurring" electromagnetic energy into 120-volt AC power ("less than 600 rem of residual ionizing radiation!"), ThinkGeek went on to offer CaffeDerm caffeine-delivering dermal patches (reminiscent of Nicarest smokable nicotine sticks, reported in the Onion back in 1998); a Buzzaire caffeine inhaler; a PC EZ-Bake Oven (fits in a 5¼-inch drive bay); wireless extension cords; the vinyl-ripping, 2-terabyte, 33-pound iZilla Media Monster digital media player; and a USB desktop tanning center.

But latter-day Edisons at ThinkGeek outdid themselves with the Screened Sphorb, a device so unbelievably awesome that its accompanying QuickTime video -- to say nothing of the attendant text description -- doesn't begin to capture its multifaceted brilliance. What self-respecting geek could pass up a product that lets you "mod elementals AND screen drive in twice the time using only half of the optional memory pods, while the other half waits to achieve a normalized state" -- for a mere $39.99? Best of all, legacy Sphorbs are fully engaged in the emulation process!
Caveat emptor: No matter what assurances ThinkGeek's Screened Sphorb page makes about availability, the item may remain on back order indefinitely (or infinitely).

3. Beyond Buggy
Usually, the moderated posts on the Forum on Risks to the Public in Computers and Related Systems (a.k.a. Risks) focus soberly on news about security flaws in computer programs -- and the life-threatening unintended consequences of those programs. But around the first of April each year, Risks takes a decidedly silly turn, featuring satirical, sometimes macabre and possibly fictitious reports of technology gone wrong.

Examples from the April 1 2006, issue include reports about a motorist trapped in a traffic circle for 14 hours by his car's malfunctioning lane-keeping software; and about the announcement at Cambridge University of new full-scale mapping software (where 1 kilometer of the real world is represented by 1 km of the map) that had revealed errors in the location of actual roads and buildings. (Spokesman Lewis Carroll assured reporters that the maps would be annotated to reflect the real-world errors.)

Then there was a post about the "successful" evacuation of an Airbus 380 in 90 seconds. The latter quotes a statistics-enamored Airbus source, who downplayed reports of injuries during the record- (and femur-) breaking deplaning: "In a group of 853 people, the chances that one person has a broken leg and doesn't yet know it are substantial. The test showed that everyone came out at least as healthy as when they went in."

2. Opera SoundWave
The Web-browser business is highly competitive, and developers like the Mozilla Foundation, Microsoft and Opera are always trying to outdo each other with breakthrough enhancements. So it seemed like business as usual when, on April 1, 2005, Opera issued a press release announcing Opera SoundWave, described as an exciting platform-independent real-time technology for short- and medium-range interpersonal communication. The company stated that it had accidentally discovered SoundWave during an R&D study to speech-enable Opera's e-mail client, and included a link to a demo of the analog-signal-processing technology.

We hoped that continued healthy competition in the browser market would prompt further advances in Web-enabled communications, but Opera's ill-advised 2006 venture into stock photography was a disappointing follow-up.

1. Deer in Camouflage
On April 1, 2007, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' blog, "The PETA Files" (say it out loud), contained a brief entry regarding a new Minnesota-based anti-hunting group called Hunting is Downright Evil (HIDE), which had developed an ingenious new plan to protect local deer from hunters -- first tranquilizing them (the deer, not the hunters), then painting them with a camouflage pattern, and finally rereleasing them into the wild. It certainly gave a new twist to the term "deerhide."

Despite the telltale date right next to the blog post's title, dozens of commentators blasted away at HIDE, PETA and each other until sunset. Only at 5:44 p.m. on April 1 -- after a score of vitriolic denunciations of deer painting, hunt interference and "tree-huggin' idiots" -- did a lone voice finally interject: "Y'all know what day it is, right?"

Needless to say, most subsequent commentators persisted in not getting it. PETA was no newcomer to the art of the prank, either: In 2000, the organization announced plans to sabotage a Texas bass fishing tournament by knocking the fish out with tranquilizers. It's a joke, son.

How Do You Want To Advertise Online

By Tsuyoshi E. Suzuki

Online advertising is often more cost effective than offline media, where seconds of exposure on TV can sometimes cost a few thousand dollars. Banner advertising has been popular 10 years back. It is powerful and immediate. The internet has become an essential component of any ad campaign. It is growing more than traditional advertising, and includes both search marketing and search engine optimization, which both tap into consumers' seemingly limitless demands for finding information on the Internet. In one eMarketer forecast, search engine marketing alone is speculated to climb to almost $6.5 billion this year, and to reach more than $10 billion by 2009.

Real-time reporting can be queried on any campaign parameter. Ad networks are critical for aggregating audiences. But if they're disconnected from the rest of the market, they can hinder efficiency and profitability because they offer limited supply and demand. Its AdLearn technology, which maximizes advertising revenues across the network, learns from the results of previous campaigns and gets smarter with each advertisement placed.

Advertising cannot compete with sales promotion and direct marketing activities in generating short-term (less than one year) sales effects. But in the long-term, the cumulative force of good advertising. Adopting online advertising into the political marketing mix has been a long-term process. In 2007 and 2008 political campaigns reached a breakthrough, incorporating online advertising as part of their campaign equation from day one. Advertisers are also considering ways to send relevant ads to mobile phones, though many people want to get free data or free calls in return for watching ads on cell phones.

Search engines will forever be linked in a type of partnership arrangement with corporate websites, through what others say about your business online, and how your company name, brand, and website are displayed in the search engine results pages. This is even more of a true statement when considering many of the large companies have numerous divisions and/or separate websites each targeting a particular market segment. Search Engine Advertising is now the world's fastest-growing advertising market. This year in the both the United States and United Kingdom it will eclipse newspaper advertising in total ad spend. Search and other partner sites with the Sponsored Search program. Connects businesses and customers online.

Internet services grew and so did resources. What fell out was the business idea, companies that were not built on a lot of solid ground. Internet advertising exceeded $17 billion in 2005. It has now surpassed billboards, magazines and cable in spending. It grew at an annual clip of 18% from 2001-2006 and only cable TV (10%) was close to a double digit growth rate. Other channels basically kept pace with GDP growth (about 3%), with newspapers (1%) and radio (2%) most negatively affected.

Online advertising is widely regarded as the most effective direct response medium, and achieves higher response rates than traditional direct mail ad campaigns, for a fraction of the cost. It is about getting the right product in front of the right audience. It's about the ultra niche markets talking directly to their target client base.

Internet Marketing - Why is Web 2.0 Essential to Your Business?

By Daegan Smith

How many popular sites do you know? Do you have any reasons why they became what they are today? Web sites such as Flickr, Propeller, Digg, MySpace, StumbleUpon are the only few of the many sites popping all over Internet. Most of these sites tag any kind of content like audio, video, graphics, articles, photos, etc. The difference with these social bookmarking sites to a conventional search where you acquire inclusive results for key words, these sites produce results based upon what other people labeled and have crated their popularity by casting their votes. If your Internet marketing business uses Web 2.0, you'll likely gain a lot of members thereby increasing your profits.

How Web 2.0 improves your business?
Social interaction and bookmarking sites marked as Web 2.0 also include wikis, podcasting sites, blogging, and video sites. So what makes these sites used by a good number of people? Those sites differ from the rest because the content in them can all be user generated. Just like Flickr and Facebook. Like what happened to YouTube, when it was purchased by Google, the number of people who visit has greatly increased. Sites such as BlinkList, del.icio.us, or Scuttle allow you to tag web pages, blog posts and any other written content. Google Video and Flickr allows you to share your photos to other members of these sites.

How Web 2.0 works for your business?
For example, when you visit a Web 2.0 site and you observed a blog entry, do you notice that at the end of the post, there is a bookmarking button? When you become a member of sites like this one, you are required to complete your profile and allow you to post anything unless it breaks the site's rules. After your post, do you notice you are obliged to describe your post and tag the fitting keywords? Yes, that's how it basically works. When people look for information in search engines, tags are generally helpful. People find immediately the written content they may be looking for. In addition, what makes this sites so cool is that they are open to anyone who views them. Moreover, if you don't want any other people who can view your content, you could possibly do so by setting your profile to private.

Applying Web 2.0 to you Internet marketing business
Web 2.0 is indeed an amazing marketing method for your Internet marketing business. If you create your own Web 2.0 site, make sure your rules are properly imposed by all members so it continues to run and attract more people into visiting it. Or, if you wish to start your own internet marketing business immediately without creating your own Web 2.0 site, you may tag your posts and that of the others. Just make sure you follow the rules so you won't be banned from the site. When people look for key words and have found any of the words you tagged, they'll see your products and services. If these people purchase any one of what you sell, then you generate sales. What's more, it doesn't cost you anything. Thus, when you go about joining an Internet marketing business, make sure you are using Web 2.0. There are many people who seem so far at making their online business successful. That's because they are not using Web 2.0. Make sure you're not one of them.

Community websites are the most happening thing on the Internet these days. They are an exciting and interesting medium of connecting with people. They allow surfers not only to connect with people from across the globe, but they also serve the purpose of building contacts with people who can help them in their professional front too.

Coming to count the benefits of a community website, the most important factor that comes to mind is the ability of these websites to pull immense traffic. Why do you think these websites are doing so well on the Internet. And why they have millions of visitors every day? One simple reason for this is 'user generated content'

The community website design is such that they allow people to write on these websites. This is helpful since, the website owners does not have to take the pain of uploading fresh content everyday. The content keeps pouring in automatically and in large numbers which increase the content quantity and also the ranking of the website on the search engines. The higher the rank of a website the greater are its growth prospects.

Apart from content. The designing aspect of these websites too is quite an essential aspect of their creation. The Community Website design is generally quite casual and friendly. They work upon making Online interaction an easy and enjoyable affair for people.

These social websites benefit from the number of members they have on their website. Hence, the community website designing is created keeping in mind the fact that they should be able to attract more visitors to register with them and become a regular user of the website.

Here too a lot depends on the design aspect of these community websites. The social portals generally have a very informal outlook. They are more of a Online social platform where people meet, interact and discuss. This concept is now being used widely and businesses to are making way into these portals. They too socialize, interact and discuss affairs with the masses and make use of their suggestions and ideas in their business.

Analyze Your Traffic Make You Succeed

By Tsuyoshi E. Suzuki

Internet marketing is becoming more sophisticated as the shopping audience increases and is spawning its own industry within the industry of the internet. Internet companies will use very sophisticated internet marketing techniques in an attempt to gain an edge over the competition and in order to attract visitors to the site. It is the process of promoting an organization using online media, typically with the goals of increasing sales and boosting profits.

Internet marketing does not simply mean building or promoting a website nor does it mean simply putting a banner ad up on another website. It is becoming the principal vehicle for this customer-contact process. Other traditional marketing activities still have a role but are often used in a complementary way to give maximum impact and return on the total effort.

Web analytics measures and analyzes the result of internet marketing efforts by studying trends, behaviour and improving productivity and search engine marketing effectiveness accordingly. By applying web analytics a company can monitor a website in order to increase their business performance and improve their site to include the needs and preferences that visitors are demanding.

Web design is an art that is the business of small and large enterprises alike. Designing a web site is more about creating a positive image of a company.

Web presence is therefore vital for bringing in the right visitors to your site. Websites claim you're going to make money online by setting up a website, throwing up an offer and some content and watching magical bucks start rolling in, but it is actually hard work and there's no such thing as "magic".

Effective search engine marketing is an ongoing process that needs to be monitored, analyzed and adjusted to match changes in both your business and the online environment. Effective Internet marketing is what drives websites to the top of major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN. For the first time, companies large and small are able to compete on a level playing field.

Millions of people are buying products and services on internet with the help of websites. So websites are now popular platforms for such sales generated on internet. Millions of people are starting home businesses and many are failing. Could it be their lack of marketing know-how that is causing their failure?

Internet marketing is hard, technical, detailed work. Internet Marketing is not easy to do. It is also by no means difficult. Internet marketing is the great equalizer!

Online Ruler - How to Copy Website Layouts

By Andy Duframe

Finding the dimensions of an online image or graphic is easy enough. Just right click and check properties. But finding the dimensions of website layouts - like tables, panels, and menu bars is not quite as easy. Here are few tricks I use to get an inside look at website layouts using an online ruler, the page source, and CSS files.

Online Ruler
This is a small program that you download to your computer. Once installed, the software launches a transparent window over your computer screen with pixel rulers along the top and left side. If you mouse over the bottom right corner, you'll see that you can shrink or expand the box, with a constant readout of the exact dimensions of the box. Drag the box around to different sections of the page to get exact dimensions in pixels.

Page Source
Looking at the html code of a website can often give you the exact dimensions of its layout. Most web browsers include a menu option for viewing the html code of a web page. With Internet Explorer, look for the page menu option and select page source. This will open the html code in Notepad. Search (ctrl + f) for table width and td width. If a web page uses tables for its basic layout, these dimensions will be easy to find.

CSS file
Websites that use cascading style sheets (css) in place of tables will not show layout dimensions in the html source code. Those specific numbers are in the .css file for that page. To see the CSS file for a particular website, open the page source html code (see above) and search for .css in the text (this is usually at the top of the page). The code should look something like this: /css/mystyle.css

Next go to your browser window and add this code to the root directory of the URL address. Nine out ten times this will open the CSS file, usually in whatever html editor you have installed on your computer or in notepad. Now look through the CSS file for the word "width" to see the exact dimensions of all tables and columns. This method might take more time than an online ruler, but it gives you more accurate results.

Tips On How To Begin Making Money With AdSense

By Susan Velez

Everyone is looking for tips on how to begin making money with AdSense. However there is no secret to making money with AdSense. I will take the time to list some tips on how to make money with AdSense.

1. Taking Action: This is the most important part if you want to learn how to make money then you must begin taking action. People are more likely to make money if you take action. You can not expect to make money if you never take action.

2. Keywords: This is extremely important if you fail to pick keywords that people search for then your website or blog will just sit there without any visitors. Your goal is to find a niche that people are starving for more information and then begin building a blog or a website on that keyword. It may take you some time to do your keyword research; but it will be worth it when you begin to notice people clicking on your ads.

3. Add Content Daily: Many people begin a blog with full intention of wanting to make money with AdSense. However they do not post daily; Google loves fresh content and the more fresh original content you post Google will give your site love.

4. Use Your Own Content: Many people use content from PLR articles; while this does work and you can earn some money from it. Your site will never rank good because it is not your original content.

5. Start Slow: You will be better of starting off with 1-2 blogs or websites. You do not want to have a lot of websites out there and stretch yourself thin because you will not have the time to add fresh content to it. You do not want to put all your eggs in one basket; however if you have several websites out there on the internet without adding content. It will be just as bad as having no website.

6. Do Not Check Your Earnings To Much: It is exciting when you first begin making money and many people want to check their earnings everyday. You should be focused instead on adding new content. Yes it is okay to check your earnings; but I would suggest that you check once in the morning and then once in the evening.

If you use these tips on how to begin making money with AdSense before you know it you will be getting that check in the mail every month. You have to earn at least $100 before Google will send you a check. With the right amount of dedication and doing something everyday to grow your business you too can begin earning money with AdSense. Internet marketing is not a get rich quick scheme if you are looking to get rich quick then you should forget about learning how to make money with AdSense. If you liked these tips on how to begin making money and you are ready to get more information so that you can begin building your AdSense empire today then visit the website below.

Site Promotion - A Comparison Of Ezine Marketing And Article Marketing

By Fabian Tan

Ezine marketing is good, and can even be very effective if the right ezine is targeted. They are good for short-term traffic, but not long-term traffic. You won't really receive much long-term traffic from ads on the sites on an ezine ad broker like '2 Bucks An Ad' because your ad is situated alongside hundreds of other offers. And eventually it gets relegated because newer offers keep coming in.

You can make some money from '2 Bucks An Ad'; people have done it, but it's not going to shake the world. If it was that easy to push out an ad and make hundreds of dollars overnight, Internet marketing would be dead easy. Unfortunately, it rarely is.

Sure, ezine advertising sounds easy. Pay, submit your ad, and watch the traffic and sales come pouring in. It doesn't always work like that.

The thing with article marketing is it's long-term traffic. And that's what you want for a consistent income. Plus, it builds credibility and branding if you have well-written articles.
Outsourcing for articles is a great strategy to consider if you want to do any form of article marketing. It does save a heck of a lot of time especially if writing is not your thing.

So, my verdict? Do both, but focus on article marketing as a long-term strategy and ezine advertising as a short-term strategy. Remember that, and you can't go wrong. Article marketing does cost effort, and it may even cost money, but it will deliver better results on the long-term. It will deliver traffic that just rolls in on autopilot.

Search Engine Marketing - How To Use Blogs To Your Advantage!

By Fabian Tan

For many webmasters, blogging is just one part of operating a much larger website. While some people may feel that blogging is a craze that will fade, it does serve as a useful combination of other tools. As an example, if you use a public Yahoo group, or a message board for search engine optimization purposes, you will soon find that a blog is much more convenient to work with.

One of the most important aspects of modern search engine optimization is gaining access to live content. If you update your blog on a daily basis, you will be helping to meet this requirement.
Among other things, if you sign up for a Blogspot account, you may even be able to find a way to update your blog from your cell phone.

Over the years, website popularity has emerged as one of the most important factors in successfully getting your site listed in the top ten listings for a keyword. You can achieve this in a number of different ways. As an example, you can register multiple domain names and include your keywords in their names. That said, domain spamming is causing a number of sites to lose their ranking.

You can use blogs to gain link popularity without the risks associated with domain registration. Not only is this cheaper, your registration with different blog hosts will make it difficult for the search engine to determine that the same person is actually running all of the separate blogs. Considering that newer search engine spiders are being designed to thwart domain spamming, it is to your best interest to keep your website clear of it.

The Top 10 Web Sites You've Never Heard Of

By Chris Dannen and April Joyner, FastCompany.com

FastCompany.com has culled the most useful and entertaining sites from the far reaches of the Web so that when these sites go mainstream, you'll be one step ahead of the crowd.

The Internet is even more useful than you think. As more and more programmers and developers race to create the next killer app, some end up gaining momentum while others haven't quite caught on yet. We've slogged through the undiscovered masses to bring you 10 Web sites that are informative, handy or simply downright cool -- before they enter the zeitgeist.

CrazyBlindDate
There are plenty of dating sites out there, but they all focus on finding compatibility based on users' profiles -- not necessarily on personalities. This site offers blind dates at public places in your neighborhood in New York; Austin, Texas; Boston; and San Francisco (with more cities coming soon). The dates can be arranged on short notice -- even as soon as tonight -- without viewing a profile or image for your date. It's the closest thing to a matchmaking friend you'll ever find online.

Better than: Pining over profile pictures on Facebook.

DailyLit
Being well-read might not be your biggest priority, but it comes in handy during dinner conversations. Luckily, there's DailyLit. The site offers both classic and contemporary titles, all provided in quick-reading installments that can be sent to you either via e-mail or RSS. Since most of the classics are in the public domain, they're free; newer titles are available for purchase. So, the next time the conversation turns to the genius of Herman Melville, you can join in.

Better than: Lugging around real books.

IWantSandy
While a glut of applications help you organize appointments on a calendar, there's a lot of activity in your daily life that doesn't fit neatly into your calendar's time slots. Not good at remembering to print out your flight confirmation code? Send a message to Sandy, and she'll remind you in a daily digest, in a text message or as an event on your calendar. Using e-mail, SMS, Twitter or Jott, you can set up and receive reminders for appointments, contacts, lists and random information. And, true to her humanlike presence on the site, Sandy speaks and understands plain English -- just like a real personal assistant.

Better than: Paying a real Sandy who needs sick days.

Cocktail Party Physics
Physics probably doesn't come to mind as a conversation starter, let alone an icebreaker in a room full of unacquainted guests. But in this elegantly written blog, stories about science and technology come to life as effortlessly as everyday chatter about politics, celebrities and vacations. Blogger Jennifer Ouelette makes science and technology engaging enough for 2,000-word posts. Now, that's a feat.

Better than: Trying to impress the in-laws with your martini capacity.

Newsmap
Newsmap is an amazing graphical representation of the constantly changing headlines on Google News. By relying on something called a "treemap algorithm" to aggregate news, Newsmap uses space to translate the importance of a story; in other words, more popular and important stories appear larger, while less important ones appear smaller. It also connects news stories by theme, using a variety of colors to represent categories.

Better than: Sorting through RSS feeds.

Run.com
You have no excuse for not keeping your New Year's resolution now that you can take that jog almost everywhere you go. Run.com, a user-generated database of running routes all over the world, uses Google Maps mashups, allowing runners to look up routes in their area and choose them by length, difficulty, scenery and other user-rated criteria. Business travelers who want to keep in shape on the road will be glad to find routes in all 50 states, as well as in dozens of foreign countries. The site is still in beta, so look for more routes to come.

Better than: Getting purposely lost just to mix up your running routine.

MakeUseOf
MakeUseOf is a tech blog that even laymen can understand. While early adopters delve into the tiniest details about Web technologies, most Web surfers want only the highlights of the latest developments. MakeUseOf offers just that, in considerably de-geeked language. The tech-savvy aren't left out, though: In the "Geeky Fun" section, the initiated will find plenty of fodder for hearty laughs.

Better than: Trawling through techno-babble blogs for something free, cool and useful.

5min
Try this: Write directions for tying your shoes, or making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It's not as easy as it seems; some things are best demonstrated, not written. That's what makes the 5min "videopedia" invaluable. It's a site featuring short videos that provide solutions or instructions for common and practical issues, like how to insulate your house or how to teach your dog to sit. None of the videos is longer than five minutes, and they're all user-generated, making 5min a kind of instructional video version of Wikipedia.

Better than: Reading About.com.

TryPhone
With so many mobile phones on the market, it's hard to keep up and know which one is right for you. That's the logic behind TryPhone, a fully functioning interactive phone-testing site where you walk through all the common features of the phone you're considering buying in glorious, high-resolution interactivity. The site also contains user reviews, specifications, product photos and links for purchasing.

Better than: The dummy devices at cell phone stores.

Damn Interesting
If you ever find yourself sucked in by the occasional History Channel special, you'll quickly get lost in Damn Interesting, a blog that writes long-form historical summaries of just about anything that's, well ... damn interesting. Read about the bizarre saga of the Trans-Siberian Railway, or the story of the failed invention of wireless electricity. If you're in need of an engaging academic time-waster, you've found it.

Better than: The "Random Article" link on Wikipedia

5 Surefire Ways to Make Money From Your Web Site!

By Ryan Matthews

A profiting website is a great business model with the internet changing every single second and more and more opportunities jumping up everyday for us to take advantage of and profit from.
Below you'll find 5 fundamental ways of making your site profit.

1. Selling Your Own Product or Service
Setup your own e-Commerce web site, where you'll promote and sell your own products, services or those of others. Like eBay or amazon but yours need not be that big. Setting up a e-Commerce site takes a lot of effort and hard work and many of these sites fail in the process.

2. Selling Advertising Space
One of the classic ways of profiting is to sell advertising space on your website to relevant and interested merchants, though not easy if your sites not strong enough but then simply integrate it with PPC (pay per click) by adding the advertising script to your page and there you go...

3. Paid Content Offering
By creating unique and useful content, you will be able to charge someone to view it, whether your whole site consists of pay per view or just a part of it is entirely up to you. An example of paid content is setting up a membership site.

4. Email Marketing
Email marketing has become ever popular where you start with optimizing a page with a opt in form and use the email addresses from that form to contact and let possible clients know about what your selling, make sure to stay away from spamming and that your customer truly wants your email before sending it.

5. Affiliate Marketing - "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IF YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT"
Probably one of the best ways to profit online as well as being hassle free with you not having to physically own, purchase or dispatch any of the products you advertise, rate and review. It basically works as follows you put a review of some product on your site providing it with your affiliate link which then sends the customer to the merchant site where if he makes a purchase you as the affiliate makes a commission.

So you want to start making money online?

I have a solution for you (scam free of course) that will enable you to learn Affiliate Marketing and become a BIG online earner like many others are doing right now. Affiliate marketing can be really profitable. You just need the right experts to guide you.

5 Things You Must Know About Business Plans

By Chuck Markham

First, if you're only reading this article because you want to find a good format for writing a business plan, then you will find some good formats, templates and software at Intuit's website - you know, the same people who make QuickBooks, Quicken and TurboTax. Well, if you go to the Intuit website, then you will find its new business plan service under the name of "JumpUp."

And even better, some of the templates and software are free. But, I have a feeling you might have a few more questions about business plans, so here are a few more pointers.

Second, something is more important, however, than just the writing a of business plan. The most important thing is that you decide WHERE you want your business to go and HOW you want to get there. Your decision about the where and how of your business goal is more important than the writing of it.

Third, the next most important thing is your specific use of the plan itself. If your business plan's purpose is to serve as a guiding light to you and your key people, then it will be in that type of format. If its purpose is to create measurable goals, help evaluate progress towards those goals, and guide decision-making, then the plan might take a different shape. And, if your business plan's purpose is to attract investors or to obtain a loan, then it might be in a different format altogether.

Fourth, and a special note for start-ups, if the business plan is for a start-up business and is for the last 2 purposes (measurable-goals/decision-making or investors/lenders), then I recommend a specialized process. First, write a business plan as if you were writing it to be your guiding light. I have worked with many clients with a new business who should not be writing an investor/loan business plan just when they are starting up the company.

Why? Because a business plan should not be a something that you create just so that it sounds good to other people (or yourself). The plan should really be an actual reflection of the desired destination and the means anticipated to get there. So, for the new business owner, these insights and realizations need some time to evolve. Sure, a new business owner starts out with goals, dreams and ambitions. But, it takes time for these goals, dreams and ambitions to mature in the marketplace. That is why it is important early on to write the business plan, but do it with the "guiding light" purpose.

When DO you take the next step and write the business plan with the potential investor or lender in mind?

When the heart and mind agree on the destination and the means of getting there. Then, and only then, is it the right time to transform the "guiding light" plan to a business plan for measurable-goals/decision-making or investors/lenders.

Fifth, once the mind and heart agree, then it is essential to commit the business plan to paper because without a clear destination, there is no basis upon which to make decisions. Decisions should be made with the destination in mind. Writing down how to reach the destination establishes mile-markers that will measure progress. Without some way to measure progress, we are only left with our feelings - and feelings change from day to day or moment to moment.
Milestones help us to make needed adjustments while the vision of our destinations keeps us on track.

To sum up, a business plan is important. The pre-work, however, is even more important. The follow-up, which measures our success against the plan, is what gives the plan its purpose.

New Year Resolutions for Your Website

By Landon Wisser

Well, it's that time of year again, a time to look back and assess the strengths and weaknesses of your website and set goals for next year. With the ever increasing rise of internet popularity, 2008 will be as important as ever.

Get to Know your Customer
It's time to learn more about who is visiting your site and what they are doing once they arrive. This information is essential for determining how well your website is performing. Installing Google Analytics is a great free and simple way to obtain information about your site visitors. Google Analytics provides information on:

• How many visitors came to your site
• The amount of time your visitors spent on the site
• Number of pages viewed
• Bounce rate(aka how many people left your site immediately after they arrive)

Optimize your Site for Search Engine Consumption
Your sites ability to be found on today's popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo is of the upmost importance. What's the point of having a fabulous website, if no one can find it? There are many ways to improve your sites search engine optimization, a few of these are:

• The addition of content rich minipages
• Appropriate use of alt, H1, and title tags
• Focus on primary keyword sets
• Syndication of an RSS feed to your domain(back linking)

Keep your Content Up to Date
Continually update your sites content. Fresh and relevant content will keep your customers interested and coming back for more. If your site includes outdated pictures and information, it doesn't reflect well upon your company's image. Some key areas to watch out for in regards to outdated content are:

• The "About Us" page
• Your contact information
• External or internal page links
• ImagesStart

Start Blogging
A good way to include new and relevant content is by implementing a blog. A blog provides a great medium for introducing fresh content, and will also increase your sites search engine rankings by creating quality back links. A blog is also a good way to position you or your company as an authority in a specific field or industry niche.

Consult a Professional
One of the best ways to improve your websites productivity is to hire a professional. If you're unsure about where to start improving your site or if you have a great deal of questions, hiring a professional may be well worth your investment.

Best Affiliates

By Alice Sen

Online affiliates are like business associates who help in promoting the products and services offered by a merchant. One of the primary requirements for this kind of marketing is a website. Therefore affiliate marketers of online affiliates are basically website publishers or owners.

As business enterprises flourish in all parts of the world, the market is over saturated with products and services. To keep their business going, the business heads make use of every nerve to get hold of the customers. Apart from spending large amount of capital on advertising and promotions in the mainstream media, the firms are now knocking the doors of the online advertising and marketing authorities. The best examples of such industrious men who take upon the mediated messages campaign are the affiliates or super affiliates.

Best Affiliates and super affiliates: In affiliate marketing industry there are plenty of professionals who have achieved a great deal of success in terms of remunerations and their own credibility in the industry. Super-affiliates is the name given to affiliates who are able to make more than 10,000 dollars a month. Now that is some amount. There is no clear definition for a best affiliate, but by looking at some of the prospective business results and growth in the industry we can have a fair idea as who a best affiliate marketer is.

Traits found in the best affiliates: Best affiliates are market gurus; true products of the online marketing industry. It is a general finding that affiliates who have a good exposure of e-commerce and advertising do fine as affiliates. The primary skill set involved in affiliate business encompasses advertising and selling. People who have been engaged in one of these practices can really do wonders in online marketing.

The second interesting fact about the best affiliate marketers is that they are proficient in web development. Web development is a holistic term and involves various aspects like the website design, website promotion, search engines and optimisation, etc.

Key to success: To be a successful affiliate you have to be the best and for that you need to work out on every strategy and move that you make. Starting from the development of your own website, you can keep on reevaluating the content and design; at the same time keeping in mind your audience and potential customers. Try to find out what the customer wants and how you can convert most of the audience members into customers.

Keep a record of every thing. It is like managing a firm. You must store all information, all statistics and all findings at one place. By analysing the facts and figures you can bring in more value to your affiliate business.

Go for the best affiliate program. The best affiliates in the industry know where to dig. Take your time and select an appropriate affiliate program. The program must meet both your requirements as well as the requirements of your website.

A website is more or less like a shop or store. It has to have that look and feel; after all you are selling like shopkeepers do. There should be enough space to look around; a range or collection of articles and your shop must be on the right street and visible to all.

To boost up your sales you can give your customers incentives, like product reviews, specifications, user manuals, advertisements and may be some funny jokes also. All this helps in retaining your visitors and the probability of their visiting again to buy increases.

Top affiliates know which beats to play and rather than putting few commercials on their websites they focus on giving their customers a shopping experience which no one can. It is pure experimentation but then the people who make it are adept with the tools and techniques they utilize.

Best Web Hosting or Low Cost Web Hosting?

By Keshav Kaushik

Underestimating the Best Web Hosting Services of the Low Cost Web Hosting Companies.
With an astronomical number of web hosting companies around, it is always a harder task to choose the best company. You cannot simply close your eyes and pick up simply anyone.

Everyone desires and deserves the best company with the best possible hosting services. The hosting company that you choose determines the future of your website to a great extent.

There has been a surge in growth in the hosting industry in recent years, bringing in more competition all the time. And the resultant factor is the numerous low cost web hosting providers that have come to the fore, their chief tool to fight the bigger hosting houses being the low price.

When it comes to choosing your web hosting provider, the factor which is considered at the beginning, by a lot many of us is the price, the affordability. Everyone desires the best company at the lowest possible price. And as such the low cost web hosting companies are doing a rocking business. But there exists a constant competition between the high cost hosting companies and the low cost companies as to prove which is the best provider.

The hosting companies charging more claim that the low cost web hosting providers could hardly look after all the issues of hosting and also are unable to provide proper support at times. A common belief about the low cost companies is that they depend on sheer volume for their profits and so they are unable to support the demand of high bandwidth, slowing down the simplest of the websites. Most of us also believe that the low cost providers offer poor service as compared to the bigger and high cost providers. This is not true in all the cases as some of them provide better services than the high cost ones and the best web hosting services.

But as the old adage goes "You get what you pay for", this may sometimes prove true in hosting also. When you pay more it is most liable that you will get the best web hosting services. The companies that charge more are obligated to respond to all your queries, at any time. But the low cost companies are not impelled. Their price rebates could be the answer to all your queries.

And as far the high cost web hosting companies are concerned, it's their brand that counts. Most of us go for high cost because of the brand name, brand equity may be. But with such a high number of clients, it is sometimes impossible to render the best web hosting services to all of them, and they may not be able to provide proper support also.

Another view could be that going for the low cost web hosting companies is a compromise between price and quality service. They simply go for the basics - bandwidth, disk space and technical support. These pre-conceived notions restricts the customers from delving deep into very low priced and even the free services offered by them.

But the main point of all the debate is that nothing is predictable and as such it is imperative to conduct a proper research to get the best services.
