Listen and Lose

Tuning in to your normal hunger signals will ensure that you never overeat again. Follow this 6-step plan.
By Heidi Reichenberger McIndoo, RD, Prevention

Humans have an instinctual (even good) fear of getting hungry. Take the film Into the Wild—when the main character can't find food, his hunger drives him to a screaming, shake-his-fist-at-the-heavens rage, a stark example of the primal nature of our need for nourishment.

Today, most of us know where our next meal is coming from, yet our reaction to hunger has not evolved with our convenience-centered world. This is why even the thought of being hungry may send you running to the mini-mart for sustenance.

If you want to lose weight, however, you must tune in to your body's signal to eat. "Hunger is a physical cue that you need energy," says Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD. It can be your best diet ally; if you listen to your body, you'll instinctively feed it the right amount. But fall out of touch, and hunger becomes diet enemy number one: You may eat more than you need or get too hungry and stoke out-of-control cravings.

These six tips teach you to spot hunger and eat to stay satisfied—so you control calories and shed pounds without "dieting."

1. Learn to identify your spot on the hunger scale

Do you really know what hunger feels like? Before you can rein it in, you must learn to recognize the physical cues that signal a true need for nourishment. Prior to eating, use our hunger scale below to help figure out your true food needs:

Starving
An uncomfortable, empty feeling that may be accompanied by light-headedness or jitteriness caused by low blood sugar levels from lack of food. Binge risk: high.

Hungry
Your next meal is on your mind. If you don't eat within the hour, you enter dangerous "starving" territory.

Moderately hungry
Your stomach may be growling, and you're planning how you'll put an end to that nagging feeling. This is optimal eating time.

Satisfied
You're satiated, not full but not hungry either. You're relaxed and comfortable and can wait to nosh.

Full
If you're still eating, it's more out of momentum than actual hunger. Your belly feels slightly bloated, and the food does not taste as good as it did in the first few bites.

Stuffed
You feel uncomfortable and might even have mild heartburn from your stomach acids creeping back up into your esophagus.

To slim down: The best time to eat is when you are "moderately hungry" or "hungry"—when you hit either of these stages, you've used most of the energy from your last meal or snack but you haven't yet hit the point where you will be driven to binge.

2. Refuel every 4 hours

Still can't tell what true hunger feels like? Set your watch. Moderate to full-fledged hunger (our ideal window for eating) is most likely to hit 4 to 5 hours after a balanced meal. Waiting too long to eat can send you on an emergency hunt for energy—and the willpower to make healthful choices plummets. When researchers in the United Kingdom asked workers to choose a snack just after lunch, 70% picked foods like candy bars and potato chips; the percentage shot up to 92% when workers chose snacks in the late afternoon. "Regular eating keeps blood sugar and energy stable, which prevents you from feeling an extreme need for fuel," says Kate Geagan, RD, a Park City, UT-based registered dietitian.

To slim down: If you're feeling hungry between meals, a snack of 150 calories should help to hold you over. Here are a few ideas:

Munch on whole foods such as fruit and unsalted nuts—they tend to contain more fiber and water, so you fill up on fewer calories. Bonus: They're loaded with disease-fighting nutrients.

Avoid temptation by packing healthful, portable snacks such as string cheese and dried fruit in your purse, desk drawer, or glove compartment.

3. Eat breakfast without fail

A recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition tracked the diets of nearly 900 adults and found that when people ate more fat, protein, and carbohydrates in the morning, they stayed satisfied and ate less over the course of the day than those who ate their bigger meals later on. Unfortunately, many Americans start off on an empty stomach: In one recent survey, consumers reported that even when they eat in the morning, the meal is a full breakfast only about one-third of the time.

To slim down: If you're feeling full-blown hunger before noon, there's a chance you're not eating enough in the am. Aim for a minimum of 250 calories and make it a habit:

Prepare breakfast before bed (cut fruit and portion out some yogurt).

Stash single-serving boxes of whole grain cereal or packets of instant oatmeal and shelf-stable fat-free milk or soymilk at work to eat when you arrive.

Eat a late breakfast if you can't stomach an early one. "Don't force anything," says John de Castro, PhD, a behavioral researcher and dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sam Houston State University. "Just wait a while and eat at 9, 10, or even 11 am. It will help you stay in control later in the day."

4. Build low-cal, high-volume meals

Solid foods that have a high fluid content can help you suppress hunger. "When we eat foods with a high water content like fruits and vegetables, versus low-water content foods like crackers and pretzels, we get bigger portions for less calories," says Barbara Rolls, PhD, author of The Volumetrics Eating Plan and a professor of nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University.

Bottom line: You consume more food but cut calories at the same time. Rolls has found a similar effect in foods with a lot of air. In a recent study, people ate 21% fewer calories of an air-puffed cheese snack, compared with a denser one.

To slim down: Eat fewer calories by eating more food:

Start dinner with a salad, or make it into your meal (be sure to include protein such as lean meat or beans).

Choose fresh fruit over dried. For around the same amount of calories, you can have a whole cup of grapes or a measly 3 tablespoons of raisins.

Boost the volume of a low-cal frozen dinner by adding extra veggies such as steamed broccoli or freshly chopped tomatoes and bagged baby spinach.

5. Munch fiber all day long

Fiber can help you feel full faster and for longer. Because the body processes a fiber-rich meal more slowly, it may help you stay satisfied long after eating. Fiber-packed foods are also higher in volume, which means they can fill you up so you eat fewer calories. One review recently published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association linked a high intake of cereal fiber with lower body mass index — and reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

To slim down: Aim to get at least 25 g of fiber a day with these tips:

Include produce such as apples and carrots—naturally high in fiber—in each meal and snack.
Try replacing some or all of your regular bread, pasta, and rice with whole grain versions.

6. Include healthy protein at each meal

When researchers at Purdue University asked 46 dieting women to eat either 30% or 18% of their calories from protein, the high-protein eaters felt more satisfied and less hungry. Plus, over the course of 12 weeks, the women preserved more lean body mass, which includes calorie-burning muscle.

To slim down: Boost your protein intake with these ideas:

Have a serving of lean protein such as egg whites, chunk light tuna, or skinless chicken at each meal. A serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards or the palm of your hand— not including your fingers. For more on sizing up protein portions, visit Prevention's Handy Portion Control Guide.

Build beans into your meals. Black beans, chickpeas, and edamame (whole soybeans) are low in fat, high in fiber, and packed with protein.

Weight Loss - Mental Preparation

By Robertas Domarkas

There are so many information on how to lose weight easily and quickly. You have to be very careful which source information you should trust, because 80% of people don't want to help you at all. In this article I will go through the weight loss mental preparation which is required for every successful weight loss program.

If you are a person, who wants to lose weight you should first of all start from a goal. Every person who wants to achieve something should start from a specific goal, where he will describe what results he wants to achieve and how long will it take. In your case its weight loss and you should make yourself a goal, which would sound like "By the 23rd of June I will weigh seventy kilograms". Once you will set yourself a goal, you will lose the wanted amount of weight more easily, because you will how many kilograms you have to lose in a certain amount of time.

I personally think that this is the foundation of everything and once you have set yourself a goal you can move on. The second tip is to burn way more calories than you consume. If everyone could do this properly, everyone would have a perfect body, but the reality is that we can't burn more than we consume so successful weight loss experts try find their "perfect contrast" between how many calories they consume and how many calories they burn. Remember that effective weight loss workout starts from a goal and a plan.

In my opinion, person who has good mindset for weight loss, will lose weight quicker than a person who only goes to gym and does nothing more about his weight.

This is what I think about weight loss mental preparation. Readers don't have to agree with me, but I personally think this is the beginning of every successful weight loss program.

Top 3 Problems of Being Overweight That Could Kill You

By Ashley Mcallister

If someone came up to you and asked you if you wanted to live longer your answer would be of course I do. The way to do this is taking care of your body and that means if you have excessive weight it is unhealthy for your body and you need to get rid of it.

Excessive weight is a burden to your body because it makes your organs work harder, it is a lot of stress on your joints, and it raises your blood pressure and all this cuts down on your life span. You should try to make your body as fit as you can and that doesn't mean it has to be like an athlete's body for everyone it means the best shape that you can get your body into for you.

By losing weight your heart will pump slower and not as fast and your joints won't be hurting as much because the weight of your body won't be pounding down on the joints and with the weight loss your blood pressure will go down. Therefore being in this better shape will add years onto your life and you will enjoy life more with the newer you. So by losing this weight you keeping all your organs healthy you feel better about yourself and you enjoy life to the fullest. Also you will feel like a million bucks because all your organs are going to be in great shape and that is everyone's goal at the end of the day.

Excessive weight is also a burden on your joints and can cause obsessive pain in them. The joints of the body that excessive weight usually will affect are the knees, ankles, and toes. You don't want to go all through life having your legs hurting you and not being able to get up and move.
Ten years down the road you want to be able to move around and live your life and not be bed ridden.

Excessive weight will make your blood pressure go up and that is not good because you can die from it. Also with high blood pressure something that is right around the corner is diabetes and once you get that there is little you can do to get rid of it.

Those are some of the consequences that could happen to you if you don't keep your body in shape and put on some excessive weight.

Three Ways to Lose Post Pregnancy Weight - Post Pregnancy Weight Loss

By Ivonna Boss

There are few things you can do! Here are some basic ways you can try to lose post pregnancy weight. It comes down to nursing, diet change and exercising. The best off all, without starving diets!

The first one is the easiest one. If you are nursing, the pounds should be coming off as long as you are eating healthy. Avoid junk food and you should be o.k. On average women can lose from a pound to four per month just with breast feeding. If you add light exercise to that, it may be even faster. However, if you are nursing and making any extreme changes to your diet, you should really discuss this with your Dr. and baby pediatrician. Both you and the baby have to get enough nutrition.

If you have stopped nursing, then changes in your diet are a must. During our pregnancy if we had a sweet tooth, we filled it. That actually has to stop. I love chocolate, but sugar is really the worse food to eat if you are hoping to lose weight. Replacing your sweet tooth with fruit and vegetables will actually help your body recover faster, and you will have more energy.

When it comes to exercise. After your pregnancy you have to start slowly with your exercise.
The reason is that your body is still recovering. I personally have hurt my joints starting out too fast. I really wanted to lose that post pregnancy weight, but it did take nine months to gain it, so we have to take it easy. As a mom, finding time to exercise is hard, but possible. Try going for a walk with your little one, or just dancing in your living room. Kids do get kick out of it, and you do burn your calories and fat.

However, if you have tried and was unable to lose pregnancy weight with any of these, and are still struggling, you can try carb rotation diet. I managed to lose 20 pounds without any diet, but I had to stop nursing and I could not lose any more. I was really getting depressed and than I came across carb rotation diet. It really thought me a lot about nutrition, what food to eat that burns more calories and which food to avoid at all times.

Losing post pregnancy weight is difficult, but it is doable! Do not go on starving diets because most likely you will gain the weight back.

Lose Weight for the Last Time

By Jessica Bergkvist

You can cut calories and lose weight. It is simple math...you take in less calories than your body burns and that equals weight loss. Add exercise and the results are even better. So why does it seem so hard to lose weight and keep it off? Why is it that the diet industry brings in BILLIONS of dollars per year, and about 95% is repeat business?

Answer: Diets simply don't work. If they did, you would never have to diet again. Sensible eating habits and exercise DO work, so why doesn't everyone who wants to lose weight just eat right and exercise?

The answer to that question may be found in how you think. When you picture your body, what do you see? Do you see a naturally thin person who is getting better everyday? Or do you see "fat?" When you think of your body, what thoughts come up most often? Do you think more thoughts of having the healthy, lean body you want, or do you think mostly of what you don't want?

Your body cannot do anything without your brain telling it what to do. What the mind sees and thinks, the body tends to follow. If you constantly think about and picture yourself being "fat," then your body automatically does what it is told, so chances are that you will have a difficult time losing weight and keeping it off. If you train yourself to think of and imagine yourself the way you want to be, chances are that your body will follow those directions and help you to create new habits that will allow you to lose weight and keep it off.

If you want to lose weight and you imagine yourself as fit, lean, and healthy, it helps to subconsciously and automatically motivate you toward that goal. If you imagine yourself as fat, you actually become motivated toward exactly what you do not want.

So just how do you change what may be a lifetime of "fat thinking?" First, it takes awareness and practice. Awareness of your thoughts and then practicing replacing them with new, healthier thoughts. Sounds easy enough, right? Not always. The subconscious (or unconscious) mind contains these "programs" of old thinking and behaviors...and remember, these took years to create, so simply trying to think different thoughts may not be enough to create the change you want.

Using hypnosis, you can communicate directly with the subconscious mind and "reprogram" old thinking and behaviors into new, permanent, positive thoughts, images, and actions that will help you lose the weight and keep it off for good.

Diet Plans For Muscle Building

By Peter Tremayne

Diet plans for muscle building are crucial to your success. Exercise and weight training can only do so much for you. If you are not implementing the right diet into your muscle building journey, you are essentially not doing yourself much good at all. Knowing what to eat and how to eat are critical elements in it.

Remember when you were younger, your parents told you that every growing child has to eat the right foods to become big and strong? Well, the same applies now, even as an adult. In order to grow, you have to eat, but in order to grow in the desired way, you have to eat right. Eating the wrong foods will lead to fat. In body building, there is nothing worse than fat.

There are many different types of diet plans for muscle building. These include protein, anabolic, and low carb diets. The protein diet is one diet that many body builders use and maintain. It is a known fact in the world of bodybuilding that protein is necessary to gain the muscle mass you are looking for. There are many ways you can get your protein, but with a protein diet, it consists of animal meats and other such forms of protein.

Another one of the many diet plans for it is the anabolic diet. This diet is not as popular because it takes more discipline and careful planning. In this diet, all you eat is protein, that is it - nothing more. Carbs are kept to a minimum during the week. When the weekend comes, carbs are allowed and you try to eat as many as you possibly can. However, this really takes some discipline.

If you are not careful and watchful, the anabolic diet can actually increase your body fat instead of your muscles. It is important to stick to the diet during the weekdays, in order to refrain from gaining the fat.

The low carb diet is another of the diet plans for muscle building. Again, in this diet, you are limiting the amount of carbs you are eating. However, as with the anabolic diet, it is not the preferred diet for bodybuilders. It is difficult to stick with and tends to wear out the bodybuilder quickly, increasing fatigue and weakness.

The reason for this is that your body loves carbs. It turns the carbs into fuel for the body.
However, with this diet, the body is tricked into using fat for its fuel instead of carbs. Depending on who you talk to, this diet may also cause you to lose muscles as well.

Get Your Dream Jeans Body and Lose 10 Pounds

By James Penn

With the right kind, your jeans will be doing all the work of slimming you and showing your best features. Women want to lose pounds instantly and have great-fitting jeans. From strategically placed pockets to hidden panels, designers have made it easier to find your perfect pair while giving you a slimming effect.

Tummy Control
For tummy control, and who doesn't want a slimmer middle, get jeans with panels that are discreetly sewn inside. Macy's and other major department stores now carry tummy tuck jeans.

Celebrities love tummy tucks and you can find out more about where they are sold by searching "tummy tuck jeans" in your favourite search engine. The company guarantees you will look a size smaller. Lee jeans are also known for their stomach smoothing fit. For a sleek appearance and no lumps caused by bulky jeans, look for those with pockets sewn into the fly. And, be careful with a slightly elongated rise which can cause tummy spillover.

Trim Your Thighs
To trim your thighs look for a bootcut or straight leg style. This creates a long, lean line as does wearing a dark wash with no faded areas. To keep your dark jeans from fading all you do is add a couple of teaspoons of white vinegar in the rinse cycle. Wear stretchy, dark denims over your thighs to look sleek with a slimming effect, but make sure you have enough room around your thighs and knees. Stay away from clinging fabric because it can make legs look bigger. Riders by Lee jeans are only about $20 and give a leg slimming effect.

Flatten Your Hourglass Figure
Nothing is more upsetting than not being able to accentuate your waist when wearing trendy denim. You can try jeans with a bit of elastic at the waist...not the type that are obviously elastic. Mavi.com carries some styles like this. You can also opt for a contoured waistband that is cut higher in the back with a slightly scooped front. Adorn your jeans with rhinestones for a modern look.

Good Looking Derriere
For a better view, the trick is in the pockets. Wear jeans with curvy pockets for a beautiful shape in the back. For greater fullness, wear flap style pockets. To draw the eyes up, wear denim with fading at the back of the legs. Another trick for lifting your backside is wearing a belt that covers part of it to make it look shapelier. Try different sizes with different jeans and you will see which ones look better on you. Serpentine stitching also creates an uplifting effect.

When buying jeans, take your time. Most women try at least 10 pairs before finding the right fit.
To build your denim wardrobe, choose a darker jean for a dressy look and a lighter shade for casual days. It also helps to bring along the pair of shoes you plan to wear the jeans with so you can try them on and make sure the length is perfect.

You're now ready to show off your dream jeans body!

How To Lose 20 Pounds In 2 Weeks

By Vitaliy Gershfeld

If you've ever wondered how to lose 20 pounds in 2 weeks without using diet pills, doing rigorous workouts or depriving yourself of foods most diets require you do, then I commend you for coming to this page because here you will find out just how to lose 20 pounds or more in 2 weeks and keep it off for good!

There are many safe ways one can start to lose weight quickly without resorting to common tactics. Several of these ways are:

1. Eat grounded flaxseed's after each meal and eat a teaspoon of coconut oil (It's really tasty so don't be disgusted!). This helps digest the food you eat much better and increases circulation which improves metabolism.

2. Walk at least 30-60 minutes a day out in the sun. No need for power walking. Just a steady pace. Research has shown that walking out in the sun helps improve your mind and body and can normalize your weight.

3. Walking up stairs. This is a GREAT way to lose weight even quicker. Not only does walking up stairs train your legs and improves muscles but it also increases your calorie burn and metabolism. Generally speaking if you can walk up a few flights instead of taking an elevator, do so. It's a great workout and it will help you lose weight.

4. Avoid eating meat and bread together because it causes weight gain and stop eating fast foods all together. This includes chips, snacks, cereal (yes I said it), sugar and white flour/bread. Add these into your daily diet: honey, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, fruits and garlic. See which ones help you the most. For example whenever I fry chicken I use coconut oil and then put garlic on it. Very delicious and VERY healthy!

Now these 4 ways aren't unusual but they are very simple and once you try them a couple of times they become very easy and can fit into your daily routine. Just keep at it and you can in fact lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks. It's all about commitment and this isn't a difficult thing to accomplish.

There is another method of weight loss which works even faster. It is called calorie shifting. It is a dieting method that allows you to eat anything you want and lose weight without exercising. Personally it's recommended for people who need to lose weight VERY quickly for special events or are just looking for fast results.

It is safe and very flexible. And ironically it breaks every dieting rule ever invented. There are 2 articles that I highly recommend you take a look at:

1. How to lose 10 pounds in 10 days!

How Does Calorie Cycling Help Me Lose Weight?

By Rachel Jenkins

A brand new way to lose weight has been hitting airwaves all over the United States.
This diet, called "calorie cycling", allows people to effectively lose large amounts of weight in short periods of time. But before you dismiss it as a fad diet, read on.

This way of eating teaches people to switch up the amount of calories that they eat day-to-day. By doing this, their body can never figure out how many calories are coming to it (as is often the case with low calorie or low carbohydrate diets), and therefore it can't adjust... or plateau.

The diet actually enforces cheat days and says that it wouldn't be successful without it.

Rachel Rofe, calorie cycling expert, explains that our bodies are used to this way of eating.
During the cavemen era, our ancestors would have to go hungry for days at a time. Whenever they got the opportunity to eat, they would binge in order to stay satisfied until the next time they had the opportunity to eat.

Cheat days are similar to the days that our ancestors fasted. Because the metabolism never expects these days, it can never adjust to a certain way of eating, and the body is literally forced to continue dropping unwanted pounds.

Because people get to have these cheat days where they can literally eat anything they want, psychologists heartily recommend this diet. They love that dieters don't need to feel deprived of malnourished. Doctors love it because it's a natural way to lose weight without people having to deprive themselves of nutrients, food groups, or even "bad" food.

Because calorie cycling is much easier to stick to than a typical weight loss plan, it has a much larger retention rate than many of the other diets.

Rachel has lost 100 pounds herself, and is passionate about helping other people do it too. She has been featured in Woman's World, among others.

You can check out more about calorie cycling on her website at www.yayFOOD.com

Best Way to Lose Weight for Good

By Michael S. Brown

The best way to lose weight is something that simply eludes most people. The unfortunate thing is that usually its right in front of their face, literally. Yet most have no idea how to lose weight to begin with let alone how to find the best way to lose weight. Those that have found a way to drop the pounds have failed to keep it off as they give in and fall short of harnessing their own self control. Each and every year around the New Year people realize they've ballooned up and decide its time to shed the pounds fast. Indulge in the best way to lose weight, for good.

Its easy for me to sit back now and remember a time when I was overweight. I am a naturally slender person and never thought I'd look and the mirror shocked and realizing that I need to lose weight. In fact for me I couldn't even figure out why I gained weight in the first place. Later that afternoon I remember sitting down for lunch with 2 ham sandwiches, a side of mac and cheese, a baked potato with sour cream, and bacon and 2 glasses of pepsi. Then it hit me this is the problem, I am less active than I was in high school but I still eat in the same manner. 20 pounds heavier than I need be I decided I didn't have to find a way to lose weight I needed the best way to lose weight.

I put a lot of time into working out and running and doing all the things I knew were right after that. I was still lacking one thing, discipline. I could force myself to workout and get active but I still had trouble with eating and how much I ate at one time. Then it hit me that the best way to lose weight was to stop eating! I was used to eating a lot growing up, again I was constantly one of the skinniest guys in my high school. Approaching my mid twenties I discovered I simply could no longer afford to eat that way as my health began to deteriorate.

So in my quest for the best way to lose weight I found it to be portion control and food control. Controlling not only the portions of food I eat but the types of food as well helped greatly in my quest. I realized it was ok to eat a high fat snack every now and again but just not every single night. For me it came down to a combo of things such as moderate exercise, eating healthy, avoid salt and high fats and eating fatty foods in moderation as the means for the best way to lose weight. Now that i know the truth I will never go back to what I once was.

12 Simple Ways To Lose Weight

By Daron Payne

Drink green tea every day.
a. Besides tasting great, green tea contains EGCG, which accelerates calorie burning through increased thermogenesis.

Cut back on soda.
a. Essentially sugar water, soda is full of calories that only add to your waistband. Try to have only one per day. Better yet, none.. Substitute soda with green tea or water. A bonus to lessening how much soda you drink is an improved skin complexion.

Buy a pedometer, clip it to your belt, and aim for an extra 1,000 steps a day.
a. Most people take only 2,000 to 3,000 steps a day. Try adding 2,000 steps per day. It will help you maintain your current weight and stop gaining weight; adding more than that will help you lose weight.

Eat five or six small meals or snacks a day instead of three large meals.
a. Many health magazines note that eating smaller meals more frequently helps your body to fully break down food, helps your body to release less insulin, which keeps blood sugar steady and helps control hunger. This is also helpful when you're exercising and trying to add muscle.

Bring the color blue into your life more often.
a. Believe it or not, the color blue functions as an appetite suppressant. Try to serve up dinner on blue plates, dress in blue while you eat, and cover your table with a blue tablecloth. Try to avoid orange, yellow and red in your dining areas as they encourage eating.

Eat whole grain foods.
a. Try to eat whole grain foods whenever possible. The enriched, bleached flower you will find in so many of today's breads have large amounts of simple carbohydrates from white flour and added sugar. These wreak havoc on your blood sugar and lead to weight gain. Eating carbs is ok, just eat the good ones: whole grain.

Eat cereal for breakfast five days a week.
a. Studies have shown that those who eat cereal everyday for breakfast are significantly less likely to be obese and have diabetes than those who don't. They also consume more fiber and calcium -- and less fat -- than those who eat other breakfast foods. Of course, that doesn't mean Lucky Charms or Fruity Pebbles should be your breakfast of choice. Keep to the top shelf in the cereal aisle. That's where you'll find the healthier cereals.

State the positive.
a. It may sound bizarre but it actually works. (Whether you believe it or not) repeat positive thoughts to yourself. "I can lose weight." "I will get out for my walk today." "I know I can resist the ice cream sandwich after dinner." Repeat these phrases to yourself all day long. After a little while, they will start to come true. I've found this technique is true for just about anything. When you think positive, positive things happen.

Use flavorings such as hot sauce, salsa, and Cajun seasonings.
a. Besides providing lots of flavor with no fat and few calories, many of these seasonings -- the spicy ones -- turn up your digestive fires, causing your body to temporarily burn more calories.

Switch from regular milk to 2%.
a. Pretty straight forward. Reduce the fat = lose the weight. You'll find once you get used to 2% or skim milk, it's just as satisfying as whole milk.

Substitute a handful of almonds in place of a sugary snack.
a. Adding almonds (or almost any nuts) help with digestion, appetite suppression, adds healthy calories and tastes great. Avoid the sugar or salt covered nuts. Just plain old nuts are the best.

Brush your teeth after every meal, especially after dinner.
a. That clean, minty freshness will serve as a cue to your body and brain that mealtime is over... not to mention it will make your next visit to the dentist more pleasant.

All of these ideas will help you to lose weight. You don't need to make any huge lifestyle changes. You don't even need to implement all of them. Just do what you can and try to stick with it.

Who Needs a Gym?

5 ways to get stronger — without lifting a weight.
Workout by Cameron McGarr, C.S.C.S., Men's Health

Few men believe it, but you don't need barbells, dumbbells, or machines to build muscle; in fact, weight-training equipment often inhibits the process. That's because it requires you to be in a specific location, which might explain why more men consider themselves runners than lifters.
After all, running is the most accessible form of exercise — anywhere you go, there's your gym.
But learn a little bit about physics and the same can hold true for your muscle workout.

Consider the pullup: It's the standard by which all body-weight exercises are measured. And even the most hard-core lifters will agree that there's no better muscle builder for the upper body — with or without weights. The reason for its effectiveness: It takes full advantage of the scientific laws of motion and leverage, placing your body in a position that forces your back and arms to lift your entire body weight. Call it applied science at its finest.

Now imagine if all body-weight exercises were as challenging as the pullup. You'd be able to build muscle anywhere, anytime — at home, on the road, or even in a public park. Physical science makes it possible. So with that said... the Five Laws of Body-Weight Training.

Law #1: The longer your body, the weaker you become.

The science: By increasing the distance between the point of force (your target muscles) and the end of the object you're trying to lift (your body), you decrease your mechanical advantage.
Think of it this way: An empty barbell is easy to lift off the floor if you grab it in the middle. But try moving a few inches in one direction and it instantly seems heavier — even though its weight hasn't changed. The same is true of your body: Lengthen it and every exercise you do becomes harder.

Apply it: Raise your hands above your head — so your arms are straight and in line with your body — during a lunge, squat, crunch, or situp. If that's too hard, split the distance by placing your hands behind your head.

Law #2: The farther you move, the more muscle you work.

The science: In physics, "mechanical work" is equal to force (or weight) times distance. And since your muscles and bones function together as simple machines — they form class 1, 2, and 3 levers — the same formula applies to your body. It's the most basic of principles: Do more work, build more muscle. Of course, in a weight-free workout, you can't increase force (unless you gain weight). But you can boost your work output by moving a greater distance during each repetition.

Apply it: Each of the following three methods increases the distance your body has to travel from start to finish, increasing not only the total amount of work you do, but also the amount of work you do in the most challenging portion of the exercise.

Hard: Move the floor farther away. For many body-weight exercises — lunges, pushups, situps — your range of motion ends at the floor. The solution: Try placing your front or back foot on a step when doing lunges; position your hands on books or your feet on a chair when doing pushups; and place a rolled-up towel under the arch in your lower back when doing situps.

Harder:Add on a quarter. From the starting position of a pushup, squat, or lunge, lower yourself into the down position. But instead of pushing your body all the way up, raise it only a quarter of the way. Then lower yourself again before pushing your body all the way up. That counts as one repetition.

Hardest: Try mini-repetitions. Instead of pushing your body all the way up from the down position, do five smaller reps in which you raise and lower your body about an inch each time. After the fifth mini-repetition, push yourself up till your arms are straight. That counts as one repetition.

Law #3: As elastic energy decreases, muscle involvement increases.

The science: When you lower your body during any exercise, you build up "elastic energy" in your muscles. Just like in a coiled spring, that elasticity allows you to "bounce" back to the starting position, reducing the work your muscles have to do. Eliminate the bounce and you'll force your body to recruit more muscle fibers to get you moving again. How? Pause for 4 seconds in the down position of an exercise. That's the amount of time it takes to discharge all the elastic energy of a muscle.

Apply it: Use the 4-second pause in any exercise. And give yourself an extra challenge by adding an explosive component, forcefully pushing your body off the floor — into the air as high as you can — during a pushup, lunge, or squat. Because you're generating maximum force without any help from elastic energy, you'll activate the greatest number of muscle fibers possible.

Law #4: Moving in two directions is better than moving in one.

The science: Human movement occurs on three different geometric planes:
  • The sagittal plane, for front-to-back and up-and-down movements
  • The frontal plane, for side-to-side movements
  • The transverse plane, for rotational movements.
Most weight-lifting movements — the bench press, squat, curl, lunge, and chinup, to name a few — are performed on the sagittal plane; the balance of exercises — for instance, the lateral lunge and side bend — occur almost entirely on the frontal plane. This means that most men rarely train their bodies on the transverse plane, despite using rotation constantly in everyday life, as well as in every sport. Case in point: walking. It's subtle, but your hips rotate with every step; in fact, watch a sprinter from behind and you'll see that his hips rotate almost 90 degrees. By adding a rotational component to any exercise, you'll automatically work more muscle — since you'll fully engage your core, as well as the original target muscles — and simultaneously build a better-performing body.

Apply it: Simply twist your torso to the right or left in exercises such as the lunge, situp, and pushup. You can also rotate your hips during movements such as the reverse crunch.

Law #5: The less contact your body has with the floor, the more your muscles must compensate.

The science: The smaller the percentage of an object's surface area that's touching a solid base, the less stable that object is. That's why SUVs are prone to rolling, and tall transmission towers need guy wires. Fortunately, humans have a built-in stabilization system: muscles. And by forcing that internal support system to kick in — by making your body less stable — you'll make any exercise harder, while activating dozens more muscles.

Apply it: Hold one foot in the air during virtually any exercise, including pushups, squats, and deadlifts. You can also do pushups on your fingertips or your fists.

Waters Importance For Weight Loss

By Jared Wash

Unfortunately one of the main reasons people struggle with weight loss and dieting is the lack of water they drink on a daily basis.

Water is the central foundation to every health and fitness goal. You probably know that without water living would be impossible but why is it so important for losing weight?

Not drinking enough water could be the reason you are not losing weight.

Water is the most valuable substance you consume and has a wide variety of essential functions that are the source of life. Let's take a look at a few of the functions water performs in your body and the reasons why it is so important to drink enough water.

• Water makes up 60-70% of your body.

• It assists in digestion, absorption and assimilation which gives you the complete vitamins, minerals, and nutrients from the foods you eat

• Water helps with the excretion of waste from the bowels and kidneys. It will help you to avoid constipation and will relieve stress on your kidneys.

• Controlling your body temperature and keeping your body regulating in different situations and actions is another task water performs in your body

• Reduced head aches and stomach bloating are a result of increased water intake

• Water also makes up 92% of your blood that helps with nutrient distribution.

• Proper hydration will help keep your skin smoother and healthier

• It also Lubricates and heals the joints and muscles.

These are just a few of the important things water accomplishes in your system.

But why is water so important for weight loss?

Many people search for appetite suppressants to curve their hunger when the best way to feel fuller is to drink more water. Your brain treats hunger and thirst the same so when you think you are hungry, your brain could actually be signaling you that you are thirsty. People who do not consume enough water throughout the day usually develop hunger pains more than those who drink enough water. Drinking cold water is the best choice. It not only quenches your thirst but can actually boost your metabolism as the water has to be warmed up, burning calories.

Another thing that you should know is that drinking water consistently throughout the day will keep you from over eating, having cravings for sweets and can accelerate your energy levels the natural way. There are many other benefits as well; these are just a few select ones.

Try it! When you feel hungry drink a big glass of water and wait five minutes to see if you are still hungry. Try always having a bottle of water with you, taking sips every so often and see the affects it has on your appetite. You could also try drinking a large glass of water before eating breakfast to accelerate your metabolism, preparing your body to be a fat burning machine the rest of the day.

Are you drinking enough during the day to keep yourself hydrated?

The average person needs about 6-8 large glasses of water every day. You must also take in to consideration how much you sweat, your caffeine consumption, and amount of daily exercise as these are indicators that you will need to increase your water intake.

If you are not a huge fan of water, eating fruit with high water content is another great way to increase your water consumption without drinking plain water. Fruit with high water content will also fill up your stomach with fewer calories and tons of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients for a healthy body. There are other foods that have a high content of water and most can be easily recognized like some fruits and vegetables but certain diets may limit foods with high water content. In this case you will simply have to drink more water.

Diuretics like coffee, pop, and caffeinated drinks cause the body to lose water and dehydrate the body. By cutting back on these drinks, you will decrease the amount of water you need to consume and your body's absorption of vitamins and minerals will be greater.

Try to always have a bottle of water with you to take sips every so often and see the affects it has on your appetite.

How do you know whether or not you are consuming enough water?

There are several easily noticeable warning signs that your body is not getting enough water and is becoming dehydrated.

• Headaches. Headaches are the most common symptom of dehydration. Water flushes out all the toxins in your body and makes up 75% up your brain. No wonder a lack of water causes a headache!

• Lack of concentration and fatigue. With a built up amount of toxins in your body due to a lack of water, you will see a drop in your energy level as your body is concentration on dealing with the unwanted toxins in your body.

• Constipation. Water in your body will be directed to more vital functions resulting in painful and harder stools from the lack of water.

• Reduced urine output or dark urine. 200 liters of water is passed through your kidney's every day so a lack of water will limit your kidney's filtering ability, resulting in darker urine.

• Dry mouth and bad breath. When not enough water is frequently passing through your mouth to rinse away the food particles, bacteria can create dry mouth syndrome and bad breath over time.

• Skin. Water keeps your skin looking and feeling clear and smooth so if your skin develops dry spots, coloring, and roughness, it could be an indication of you is dehydrating your body.
Final thoughts

If you are serious about becoming leaner and healthier, drinking water is an absolute must. Nothing is more important to your health than drinking enough water, so give it a shot and start drinking more to help you achieve weight loss the natural way and put you on the right tract to a healthier lifestyle.

Have a great day and God bless!

The Best Exercise For Losing Weight

By Arkady Itkin

Both, scientific research and my extensive observation and study prove beyond any doubt that the best kind of exercises, which consistently makes people lose weight faster and more effectively, combines a simultaneous intensive cardio work-out and intensive resistance training which involves a large group of different body parts. This kind of combination of physical activities causes that essential all-encompassing stress on a body that makes your metabolism skyrocket not only during the time you work out but for hours or even for days later.

Although all forms of exercise contribute to increased metabolism and burning fat, the most common exercise - light jogging and lifting weights - are the most ineffective ways of losing weight because they are lacking the above essential elements of an effective weight loss work-out: they are lacking the "all encompassing intensity" - the activity that will put physical stress on different parts of the body simultaneously. Light jogging at a comfortable speed doesn't put serious stress on any part of human body. Simple weight lifting may put great stress but only on one set of muscles, and thus - the essential "all encompassing" part of the work-out is compromised.

One, incredibly effective exercise for weight loss that proves to bring amazing results over and over is climbing stairs. And by "stairs" I surely don't mean that little machine that moves underneath your feet at a gym; I am talking about real stairs - a long set of stairs and much preferrably outdoor stairs. Climbing / running upstairs is a great exercise because it is both a very intense cardio work-out and it also engages several of your major muscle groups - legs, lower back and upper back.

If you want to lose weight and you are serious about achieving your goal, I suggest that you explore your locality, drive around and find a hill or some kind of elevated landmark which has a stair access. The longer the set of stairs is the better.

A 20-minute intense stair skipping in the morning before work / school that can be done in sets of five minutes with 1-2 minutes rest will jump start your metabolism and will raise it to levels that very few other exercises can. As you get in a better shape, you can challenge yourself in all kinds of ways by using that same set of stairs. You got try reaching the top faster, or making your breaks between the sets shorter, or you could make it hard to go up by carrying a backpack or a set of dumbbells in your hands as you go up which will engage yet another group of your muscles and will make your work-out even more intense.

There are two huge advantages to this exercise:

First, it's much more fun to go up the stairs in a nice area outdoors, enjoy fresh air, and see all the different things around you than being stuck at a stuffy gym and pumping steel or stairs while standing in one place and impatiently waiting until it's time to go. And if you enjoy your work out more, you are likely to do it for longer and thus achieve better results.

Secondly, it's hard to find a more intense exercise that would combine both - muscle work and cardio work and that will be as effective when it comes to raising metabolism and burning fat as climing stairs.
So, go - drive around and find one or more stair routes and s
tart using them tomorrow to your great benefit and let me know how it goes!

How To Lose Weight - Be Sure To Eat Breakfast

By Michael M Thomas

When you were a child you were probably taught that one meal was more important than all the others. Do you remember what meal that was? That's right - it's breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And while most of us know that, many of us still manage to skip breakfast (or to eat something unhealthy).

It is very simple and basic, but eating a healthy breakfast is a simply way to help you lose weight. This is why: it starts your body burning calories early in the day. Yes, it gives you energy and that's great. But more importantly (when you are trying to lose weight), eating some healthy food for breakfast trains your body to expect nutrition and that keeps your body in a calorie burning mode. If you start eating a healthy breakfast, you will be on your way to losing weight.

What does breakfast usually consist of for you? If your answer is nothing or a cup of coffee and a piece of toast, you are probably unhealthy or at least unhappy with your weight.

It really is true: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating a healthy breakfast sets the tone (for your body) for the rest of the day. When you don't eat breakfast, your body goes into starvation prevention mode and stores anything you give it. That means your lunch gets stored and that often turns into fat. While you think you are helping yourself by cutting out the calories you would consume during breakfast, you are really hurting yourself.

Please make sure that when you start eating breakfast that you eat healthy foods. You will not lose weight if you start eating donuts, fried foods, and sugary foods. Your breakfast needs to consist of healthy, natural foods. Things like whole grain cereal (oatmeal, for instance) are great. They give you a steady stream of energy.

Eating a good breakfast is key to making sure you have a healthy diet. From there, you mix in a little exercise and you're well on your way to looking fit and fabulous.

Michael M Thomas became a health and fitness nut because of his wedding. Years of sitting in front of a computer (and a lack of exercise) added a "few" pounds to his midsection. If you want to learn more abs exercises and what worked for Mike, check out his site Fitness in 12 Minutes The site offers a $7 report that will help you lose weight, burn fat, and get fit. 10 Healthy Weight Loss Tips

By Kristi Patrice Carter

It's wonderful to want to lose weight and be healthy. However, with the different types of diets that are popular today, our health can be compromised. The best solution for losing weight and keeping it off is to eat healthy and smart. Here are 10 tips to help you lose weight and keep it off.

1. NEVER try any kind of starvation diet. Our bodies need different types and amounts of vitamins and nutrients just to keep going. Starving yourself to lose a little weight can deprive your body of essential nutrients and vitamins. This can damage our bodies severely, including damage to the liver, kidneys, heart, and even the brain.

2. Try not to deprive yourself. While it is not healthy to eat 'junk food' all the time, it may not be healthy to deprive yourself of sweet things that comfort you. The reasoning behind this is that you will stay away from these types of foods for a while, but one slip up, and you will automatically want to have more. This can lead to over-eating these types of foods, and that will definitely not help our diets. Instead, try snacking on sweet things like raisins, dried fruits, fresh fruits, or nuts.

3. Whether we like it or not, we must have exercise. No diet will successfully help you become healthy if you don't exercise. If you truly dislike exercising, and many people do, try something fun like jumping rope. This is a great cardio exercise and burns a lot of calories. It's also a lot easier on the knees and joints than jogging or sprinting.

4. Avoid the 'bad' fats. Saturated fats and Trans fats are considered the bad fats. Fats that are actually good for us are Monounsaturated fats and Polyunsaturated fats. These are absolutely necessary to the body and health. You can tell the difference because at room temperature, the 'bad fats' are solid, like lard and animal fats. The 'good fats' are liquid, like coconut oil or peanut oil.

5. Get the right amount of insoluble fiber. We actually can't digest this type of fiber, however it provides great benefits for our bodies. It slows down the body's digestion, and the process in which our bodies turn carbohydrates into glucose. This helps us feel fuller longer, which will keep us from over-eating.

6. Keep a food journal. This may sound kind of strange, but a lot of times we just don't realize how much we eat. Writing down what you've eaten will help with this. Going back to look over your journal, you will see what you are doing that may be inhibiting your progress. You will notice 'bad habit' patterns that you need to overcome, such as eating late in the evening, or snacking while you watch TV.

7. Count your calories. An average adult needs 1500 to 2000 calories a day to maintain a healthy weight. If we're not keeping track, we can easily go over this amount, as much as two to three times over! Counting and keeping track of calories will allow us to lose weight and keep it off. Pay special attention to the calories in the things you're drinking. Usually, by the time we have had our daily drinks, we leave ourselves very little actual 'eating' calories.

8. A lot of times when we're trying to lose weight, we find that we are hungry all the time.
Veggies can help with this. The recommended serving of fruits and vegetables is 5 to 13 servings a day. 2 to 4 of those servings should be from fruit, and the veggies are free. You can eat as many as you want. This will ensure that we are full and satisfied, not to mention the amazing benefits of fruits and vegetables.

9. Try smaller meals several times a day instead of 2 or 3 large meals. This will help you lose weight by speeding up your metabolism. By eating more often, you won't be as hungry or as likely to snack before bedtime.

10. Get a support system. Especially if you are in a household where you are the only one who is dieting. It makes it easier when we can talk with people who are going through the same thing. Having support from people will help you stick with your plan easier, and motivate you to get active and healthy.

Trying to lose weight can be difficult. Following these tips is a good way to lose weight and keep the weight off. It's important to get the right foods, and to stay healthy and happy.

Need to Lose Weight? Then Increase Your Metabolism

By Matt Falconer

If you need to lose weight, one great way to start melting pounds away is to increase your metabolism. By increasing your metabolism, you'll be able to process food faster and therefore will store less fat in the body. In fact, with a better metabolism, you're body will even begin burning away existing fat in order to get the energy it needs to support itself.

How Metabolism Works Your metabolism can either work for you or against you. The main way we all get energy is from glucose, commonly known as our blood sugar.

When our blood sugar runs low, our metabolism burns the fat in our bodies in order to make more energy. However, when our blood sugar runs high, our metabolism stores fat in our bodies to use later.

So now let's look at how you can get your metabolism to work for you.

Go Ahead and Eat Many people believe that the key to losing weight is to stop eating. Well, that will actually have a negative effect on your metabolism. Eating less will cause your metabolism to slow down because it will sense that you don't have enough food.

So when you finally eat, your blood sugar will jump through the roof and your metabolism will store the extra glucose as fat.

Instead of starving yourself, eat many smaller, healthy meals that are low in calories and fat. Also, consume plenty of water, fruits, and vegetables.

By eating smaller portions you'll not only curb your appetite, but you'll also trick your body into thinking that it's getting plenty of food. Therefore, your metabolism will kick into a higher gear.
Then when it doesn't get the glucose it needs for energy (because you're eating healthy) then it will begin to take that glucose from the stores of fat that are already in your body.

Get Yourself Moving Exercise is a guaranteed way to increase your metabolism. Always check with your doctor for what is the best exercise regime for you. Most of the time, walking as little as twenty minutes a day, will help increase your metabolism.

Exercise actually helps you lose weight in two ways:

First, exercise builds muscle and muscle burns calories on its own. Secondly, when you exercise your body is forced to come up with enough energy to support your activity. So, it begins burning fat in order to give the energy you need.

Don't be put off when I say exercise - there is no need to be pounding away furiously on a treadmill for hours a day.

A simple yet effective mini routine is all that is needed to give your metabolism a boost.
Some Final Words about Losing Weight If you need to lose weight, you're certainly not alone. Millions of people are in the same boat. However, most people don't realize what it takes to first lose the weight and then to keep the weight off.

If you increase your metabolism, you'll see that over time, your fat will melt off your body and your weight will gradually drop. The two best ways to increase your metabolism are to eat smaller meals more often and to exercise regularly.

Matt Falconer's latest guide helps you shift pounds, boost metabolism and burn fat without spending hours in the gym sweating away on the treadmill. =>
