How To Prevent Osteoporosis

By Mitchell C. Adams

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease in which the bones become brittle and prone to breaking. Though osteoporosis affects all bones in the body, of particular concern are fractures of the spine and hip. A spinal fracture or a fracture of the hip can have devastating consequences ranging from excruciating pain in the back or hip, temporary or permanent immobility, deformity in the bone structure and even death.

This can be prevented to a large extent if the proper precautions are taken at the proper time. A healthy lifestyle that promotes strong bones, particularly before the age of thirty is the best defense against osteoporosis. While the further progress of osteoporosis can be managed to a certain extent, there is no permanent cure.

Here's what you can do to protect your bones and yourself from getting osteoporosis. Remember all four steps work in conjunction with each other and each of them is equally important in the fight against osteoporosis.

1. Make sure you get your recommended daily dose of Calcium. Bones need calcium, to grow and to stay strong. Not getting sufficient calcium can be a major factor in the development of osteoporosis.

2. Vitamin D, which is got from direct sunlight as well as from egg yolks, fortified milk and liver, is used by the body to enhance absorption of calcium. Lack of vitamin D inhibits the body's ability to extract and absorb calcium from foods. Vitamin D3, also called cholecalciferol, is the form of vitamin D that is ideal for health of the bones.

3. Weight bearing exercises, including walking, jogging, stair climbing, hiking and dancing are hugely beneficial to the bones. Individuals who exercised regularly during childhood and adolescence are more likely to have denser bones.

4. Tobacco leaches the calcium from the bones. A healthy lifestyle that includes no smoking or excessive alcohol is a great way of taking care of your bones.

How To Prevent Email Spam

By Francis Kilkelly

Ever now and then I'll get an email into my inbox saying something like:

"I'm receiving lots of spam all of a sudden and because I signed up with your site then of course YOU are the reason why I'm getting it!"

I really hate these mails but rather than get peeved I'm going to share a few tips that everyone can follow to reduce the amount of email spam they receive.

----------------

- If you receive a spam/unsolicited email NEVER follow their 'helpful' Unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of the mail. What spammers do is send out millions of emails to random email addresses. If you happen to prove that your email address is alive by 'Unsubscribing' then what you are really doing is subscribing to their spam list indefinitely. I'm tech-savvy but I still fell for this one for a while.

- Related to the previous point, it's a good idea to use an email provider that doesn't display images in emails until you specify to display them. This is because if you open a spam email containing images as soon as the images load the spammers will recognize this and you have proved that your email address is alive. Gmail is one of the email providers that offers this protection.

- Never sign up to any forum/community using your email address as your username. If you do this spammers can read your email address straight from your profile page and when you write posts. You are displaying your email address to them, it's like throwing a little innocent lamb in front of a pack of lions! DINNER TIME!

- If a site asks you to sign up but you don't completely trust what they are going to do with your email address then I would recommend using a temporary email address service. Using a service like this you can sign up using a temporary email address that you can discard afterwards leaving your original email address untouched. However if you are signing up with a website that you DO trust and that will need to use your email address for sending notifications etc... (like Facebook, eBay) then I would not recommend using these temporary email services.

- Instead of using a temporary email address you can set up an entirely separate email account just for purposes like signing up to services etc... and use your existing email account for important tasks like emailing friends etc... Divide and conquer!

----------------

I hope this article has helped a few of you out there. Have a spam free day!

Anger - Detect It, Prevent It, Manage It, Just Don't Lose It

By Benedicta Dolson

Anger is one of the most misunderstood and overused of human emotions. It is a reaction to an inner emotion and not a planned action. The feelings underlying the anger reaction make us feel vulnerable and weak; anger makes us feel, at least momentarily, strong and in control, but anger can be devastating. One moment of madness can bring about lifetime of suffering and in vain repentance. To be more specific:

• Anger sends marriages and other family relationships off-course.
• Anger reduces our social skills, compromising other relationships, too.
• Anger means losing business that you could have won in a more gracious mood.
• Anger leads to increased stress.
• We make mistakes when we are angry, because anger makes it harder to process information.

Angry behaviors are learned over the life-span and therefore can be unlearned and replaced with healthier patterns of coping. To repress anger is unhealthy and yet to express it impulsively, as we so often do, may give momentary relief but inevitably will carry negative consequences. Here comes the anger management, following are some of the anger management techniques:

• Learn to talk about your feelings - if you're afraid to talk or if you can't find the right words to describe what you're going through, find a trusted friend or adult to help you one-on-one.

• Express yourself calmly - express criticism, disappointment, anger or displeasure without losing your temper or fighting. Ask yourself if your response is safe and reasonable.

• Listen to others - listen carefully and respond without getting upset when someone gives you negative feedback. Ask yourself if you can really see the other person's point of view.

• Negotiate - work out your problems with someone else by looking at alternative solutions and compromises.

Detect and Prevent Anger

There are very distinguishable physical manifestations of anger. If you are able to discern it you can pre-manage your anger by detecting and preventing your sliding into angry state of mindset. When you are angry, you would probably feel:

• Muscle tension
• Accelerated heartbeat
• A "knot" or "butterflies" in your stomach
• Changes in your breathing
• Trembling
• Goose bumps
• Flushed in the face

You can reduce the rush of adrenaline that's responsible for your heart beating faster, your voice sounding louder, and your fists clenching if you:

• Take a few slow, deep breaths and concentrate on your breathing.
• Imagine yourself at the beach, by a lake, or anywhere that makes you feel calm and peaceful.
• Try other thoughts or actions that have helped you relax in the past.

Keep telling yourself:

• "Calm down."
• "I don't need to prove myself."
• "I'm not going to let him/her get to me."

Stop. Consider the consequences. Think before you act. Try to find positive or neutral explanations for what that person did that provoked you. Take help of the people expert in providing stress management techniques, or join anger management classes, if you think you yourself are not capable of controlling your anger. To know more about anger management read articles on BIAM.org.uk.

Whatever you do to manage your temper, remember one thing; only you have the power to control your own violent behavior, don't let anger control you.
Be strong. Be safe. Be cool.

Breast Cancer - Prevent With Healthy Living

By Michael Russell

Generally speaking, breast cancer can be explained as an abnormal growth or a mass of cells, also known as a tumor, anywhere within the breast or immediate surrounding area. Usually the breast tumor is felt to be a lumpy mass during the early stages of breast cancer. If a woman feels a lump or abnormality of the breast of any kind, she should see a doctor immediately. In many cases, there is no cause for alarm, but because breast cancer can be a killer, medical attention is highly recommended.

When breast cancer is detected early, it can be treated quickly and effectively - usually with excellent results. Quick treatment is essential because all breast tumors start off benign initially. If the tumor has not begun to grow abnormally and is removed during the benign stage, the cancer may not spread. If the cancer does not spread, the woman is able to lead a normal, cancer-free life from that point on.

As with most cancers, the exact cause of breast cancer has not been pinpointed. However, there are many risk factors applied to many women. There are many arguments that breast cancer is hereditary, so if there is a history of the cancer in a woman’s family, she should see a doctor regularly for preventative measures. While heredity may play a role, life choices do as well. For instance, women who smoke cigarettes and consume alcohol regularly are at a higher risk for breast cancer than those who do not. Additionally, obese women that do not engage in regular physical activity are at an elevated risk for breast cancer.

It has been found, however, that altering the levels of hormones in the body can lead to different forms of cancer, breast cancer included. Many women take drugs and supplements that have estrogen as a main ingredient. These medications are used to increase sexual drive, assist in lactation, or deal with menopause. There are studies currently underway to help determine the influence of increased levels of estrogen on the development of breast cancer.

Despite the exact causes of breast cancer being unknown, there are many resources explaining and suggesting how a woman might prevent it. While much of this literature is purely speculation, there are precautions all women can take including maintaining a healthy body weight. Because overweight women have a higher chance of developing breast cancer, it is a good idea to lose the fat. Also, regular visits to the doctor are recommended. However, one of the best ways a woman can monitor her breast health is by conducting the at-home exam once a month.

In addition to regular doctor visits and maintaining a healthy body weight, a healthy diet and plenty of exercise can also influence the onset, or not, of many types of cancers. Foods that contain nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants essential to preventing breast cancer include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and legumes. Other good foods are any type of citrus, tomatoes and soy products. A diet low in carbohydrates may also be helpful.

Combining the healthy diet with regular exercise, a positive attitude and an overall healthy lifestyle may dramatically reduce a woman’s chances of developing breast cancer. By no means are these suggestions the only answer, but should be followed as part of an overall attempt at living as healthy as possible.
