Using Your Embroidery Skills for Charity

By Hayi Mansoor

Embroidering by hand is a skill that in many cases is passed from generation to generation and the articles produced for it are used as heirlooms, as gifts and as articles to be cherished for many years. We use them in our homes, in our every day lives, to decorate toys and make our clothing more attractive. Most of us don’t think about using them to raise funds for charity, or, as a charitable donation in and of themselves. Embroidered items, with intricate embroidery designs and lovely embroidered patterns can be used in places such as hospitals, sales to benefit homeless or indigent, or as gifts to be sent to premature babies or older members of the community who are in nursing homes or hospice treatment centers.

Many hospices have elderly individuals who , due to their treatments, blood flow problems or medications are frequently cold. Taking a small amount of fleece, about a yard, and then embellishing it with a particularly bright embroidery design, of say floral embroidery patterns for a woman or a mallard duck embroidery pattern for a man would make an admirable lap robe with which to keep warm when the evenings seem chilly to them. Using our imagination we can find a way to turn our hobby into a creative source of income for our favorite charity such as a sale of smaller items for aiding a favorite charity, or to provide for the local animal shelter. If we choose to do so, our items can be a means to support our favorite charity or failing that,. To turn the items we produce into items that can be used by childrens hospitals or nursing homes.

Think of all the items that your embroidery patterns can adorn. Don’t you know of a nursing home in your area.? Have you visited it lately.

Many of our elderly are living there, with minimal visitors and very little in the way of discussion or sensory stimulation. Very often the women, and sometimes the men are embroiderers from years past and will be able to help us with our designs or embroidery stitching.

To embroider a wall picture with bright spring flowers may just draw out the elderly woman who has little to say or discuss with anyone around her. It may be that she has nothing new to talk about.

A discussion of the embroidery patterns, or a new embroidery design as you present her with your picture may just be the therapy that she needs to begin to feel as though she is still a useful member of society.

Drawing out people using the skills and talents that we learn while making that new embroidery stitch is particularly satisfying in that we may learn something new in the process. There are many ways in which our talents and our favorite embroidery patterns can become something special to someone else besides us, and that is a way to use the skill that will provide a great deal of extra pleasure.
