Is Time Travel Possible?

Time is "resistant to simple definition," according to renowned astronomer Carl Sagan. He’s quite right: Many of us think we know what time is, but we would have a hard time actually defining it. It’s not a tangible thing that you can literally see or touch, but its effects are evident as we look at ourselves aging or trees growing. Time also seems to propel us in certain directions – whether to meet a deadline or catch a plane on time – based on the numbers on your clock.

Scientists, however, often describe time as the fourth dimension of our universe. (The other three dimensions pertain to space, including up, down, left, right, backward and forward.) The theory is that time cannot exist without space, and likewise, space cannot exist without time. This interconnected relationship of time and space is called the space-time continuum, which means that any event that occurs in the universe has to involve both space and time.

Albert Einstein had a theory of special relativity, wherein time slows down as an object approaches the speed of light. Today, this theory leads many scientists to believe that traveling faster than the speed of light could open up the possibility of time travel to the past as well as to the future.

Right now, the speed of light is believed to be the highest speed at which something can travel, so modifying our DeLoreans, and traveling "Back to the Future" is unlikely. As an object nears the speed of light, its relativistic mass increases until, at the speed of light, it becomes infinite. Accelerating an infinite mass any faster than that is impossible, or at least it seems to be right now.

However, there are other theories that lead to the notion that space travel will be a thing of the future.
  • Wormholes: Also known as Einstein-Rosen Bridges, these could allow travel many light years from Earth in a fraction of the time it would take with conventional space travel.
  • Cosmic strings: Thinner than an atom, these create intense gravitational pull on objects near them. Because their force distorts spacetime, some wonder if they can be used for time travel.
  • Black holes: When stars reach the ends of their lives, they create implosions known as black holes. Their gravitational fields are so strong that light can’t escape and anything coming in contact with it will be sucked in. Kerr holes — a type of black hole — have rotating black holes that some say could be used for time travel portals or to travel to parallel universes.

'GPS' for Students

Detecting roadblocks on the path to success
Provided by Tutor.com

Homework, studying and tests are a fact of life for every student -- and every parent. But, as the year goes on and classes get more difficult, students sometimes get lost in the maze of schoolwork.

Unlike the GPS system in your car, children don't always alert you when they make wrong turns, so parents don't always know when they're in trouble. There are warning signs, though, that parents can keep an eye out for before a major detour happens:

"The dog ate my homework"
Learning is cumulative, and that means every homework assignment counts toward complete understanding of a subject. Students might get away with one missed assignment, but several missed assignments can add up to lower grades and falling behind.

If your child is missing homework because he or she doesn't remember when it's due, you might suggest writing down each assignment in a notebook and check off the list each night.

If your child is skipping assignments because of a failure to understand the subject, don't wait to get help. Find someone who can step in to provide extra help so your child doesn't fall behind -- teachers and guidance counselors can provide referrals, or try online tutoring for immediate help.

"I don't like my teacher"
Sometimes students and teachers just don't click in the classroom. Teaching and learning styles vary, and it can be difficult for a child to recognize that problem and know when to ask for help.

Encourage your child to ask for further explanation of the subject in class, talk to other teachers, or ask for help from an outside source. Sometimes all your child needs is a different explanation of a concept to "get it."

"I'm no good at algebra -- I give up"
Most children won't send up an obvious flare if they have fallen behind in class, but they may exhibit signs of low confidence and self-esteem that are tied to schoolwork. This could be a sign that your child is stuck, frustrated and needs help. Take action quickly before things get worse.

Talk to your child to determine the root of the problem and work with the teacher to determine the best way to get your child back on track.

Getting back on the road
If you see signs that show your child is heading for a detour, act quickly. Help your child with homework in subjects you know, and ask for help with the subjects you don't know. Teachers and guidance counselors can provide resources for you, and tutors can provide extra help in difficult subjects.

Top 10 Useless Body Parts

By The Science Channel

When you're sick you may feel that certain body parts are more trouble than they're worth. And in some cases, you'd be right. While the human body has evolved and adapted significantly since the caveman days, a few biological traces of our prehistoric ancestors still remain with us in the form of freeloading body parts we lug around with us, but have no use for. Take a gander at the top offenders!

10. Plica semilunaris
You may not know it, but you have a third
eyelid. Pull open the two more noticeable eyelids and take a look -- it's located right in the corner by the tear duct. This small third eyelid is left over from what's known as a "nictitating membrane," which is still present in full form in some animals including chickens, lizards and sharks.

9. Body hair
No doubt we were once hairier. Up until about 3 million years ago, we were covered with body hair. But by the time Homo erectus arrived, the ability to sweat meant we could shed our woolly ways.

8. Sinuses
Doctors don't really know much about sinuses -- only that we have a lot of them. Possibilities for their function range from insulating our eyes to changing the pitch and tone of our voice.

7. Adenoids
Adenoids trap bacteria, but they're also prone to swelling and infection. Just ask any 7-year-old. Luckily, our adenoids shrink with age and are often removed, along with ...

6. Tonsils
Also prone to swelling and infection. If you still have them when you reach your 30s, it's almost an accomplishment.

5. Coccyx
More useful as a game-winning Scrabble word than as part of the anatomy, the coccyx or tailbone, is made up of several fused vertebrae left over from the olden days when we had tails.

4. Arrector pili
When we were hairier (see No. 9), the arrector pili made the hairs stand on end when we needed to appear bigger and scarier. Now, it just gives us goose bumps.

3. Wisdom teeth
Back in the day, when we ate mammoth meat off the bone and didn't floss afterward, our teeth tended to fall out. Therefore, when those reserve molars, aka "wisdom teeth," came in, they were welcomed. Nowadays, fluoride and dental plans have made them just a huge pain.

2. Appendix
Darwin claimed the appendix was useful for digestion during our early plant-eating years; it's dwindled down to little since we started eating more digestible foods.

The April Fools' Day Defense Kit

This year, don't be taken for a sucker by the media.
By Jack Shafer

As April 1 approaches, prudent observers will be on the lookout for the media's latest hoaxes. Last year, in anticipation of April Fools' Day, Jack Shafer offered advice on how to avoid becoming the victim of the media's shenanigans.

You don't look gullible, but you are. Year after year, the media take advantage of your naiveté and humiliates you with an April Fools' Day prank.

You're probably still kicking yourself for being fooled by the April 2000 Esquire feature about "Freewheelz," an Illinois startup that promised "self-financing, free cars" to consumers. Every time you spot Discover magazine on the newsstand, you growl because you fell for its April 1995 article about the discovery of the ice-melting, penguin-eating hotheaded naked ice borer. Your father probably still gripes about Sports Illustrated's April 1, 1985, article about Sidd Finch, the New York Mets prospect who could throw a baseball 168 mph.

The Museum of Hoaxes Web site catalogs these greatest hits to complete its Top 100 list of the greatest April Fool's hoaxes of all time. There's the BBC's legendary segment on the Swiss spaghetti harvest (1957), Phoenix New Times' story about the formation of the "Arm the Homeless Coalition" (1999), and PC Computing's report on legislative efforts to ban the use of the Internet while drunk (1994), just to name a few classics.

April Fools' hoaxes succeed because the victims, conditioned by a stream of implausible but true stories in the press, aren't expecting the sucker punch. If you don't want to be anybody's fool this year, assume a guarded crouch, especially as the countdown to April 1 progresses. Some April Fools' Day pranks arrive in your mailbox a couple of days before the holiday in the form of a monthly magazine. Remember, to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Beware strange animals. If a story whiffs even remotely of the hotheaded naked ice borer, it's likely to be a hoax. Technology Review hoaxed its readers with an April Fools' story in 1985 titled "Retrobreeding the Woolly Mammoth." In 1984, the Orlando Sentinel did the same with a piece about the cockroach-devouring Tasmanian mock walrus. In 1994, London's Daily Star sports pages reported that invading superworms might destroy the Wimbledon green.

Turn off your radio. Deejays love to pull practical jokes on April Fools' Day. In 1989, KSLX-FM in Scottsdale, Ariz., broadcast the claim that the station had been taken hostage by Pima Indians, prompting calls to the police. WCCC-AM/FM in Hartford, Conn., told listeners on April 1, 1990, that a volcano had erupted not far away. San Diego's KGB-FM alerted listeners on April 1, 1993, that the space shuttle Discovery had been rerouted from Edwards Air Force Base to a local airport. Thousands showed up to view the landing despite the fact that the spacecraft was earthbound that day. It's not just shock jocks pulling the pranks—you can't trust NPR, either. Its "humorists" have aired pieces on portable zip codes you can take with you when you move (2004), federal health care for pets (2002), and advertisements projected onto the moon (2000).

Shun the British press. The British tabloids make stories up all the time, but on April Fool's Day, everybody on Fleet Street fabricates. The Times used the day to run a spoof ad announcing an auction of "surplus intellectual property"—various patents, trademarks, and copyrights. The Daily Mail announced the postponement of Andrew and Fergie's wedding because of a clash with Prince Charles' calendar. He was going to be butterfly-hunting in the Himalayas. The Daily Mail told readers that nuclear submarines were now patrolling the Thames. The Independent published a scoop about skirts for men at a fashionable shop. The Guardian declared it would replace the women's page with the men's page. In 2000, the Times complained that the surreal quality of the news—Labor turning right wing, for example—had taken the ease out of cracking a good April Fools' joke.

If they pranked before, they'll prank again. In addition to the British press and NPR, the weekly chain formerly known as New Times Inc. (now Village Voice Media) loves to hoax its readers.
Google has established a reputation for silly hoaxes with pages hyping its Google MentalPlex and PigeonRank technologies. It once posted openings for its Googlelunaplex office on the moon and introduced a smart-drink called GoogleGulp!

Too good to be true. News organizations sometimes fall for the April Fools' Day pranks perpetrated by outside hoaxsters, so don't expect every clue to be obvious. If an April 1 article declares that something valuable is now "free" or purports to break news about "hidden treasure," you're being had. Does an organization's acronym or abbreviation spell April Fool?
Also, scan copy for anagrams of "April Fools'" or some similar play on words. Discover's story on the hotheaded naked ice borer cited as its authority wildlife biologist "Aprile Pazzo," which is Italian for April Fool.

Alex Boese, curator of the Museum of Hoaxes and expert on all things April Fools', advises that you finish reading articles before rushing into the next cubicle to spread the incredible news.
Many hoax articles end with an obvious clue or an explanation that it's all a joke. Double-check all radio warnings of disasters—volcanic eruptions, floods, killer bee invasions—and question any story uncovering a new, onerous tax (say, on Linux).

New-product announcements that arrive on or near April 1, such as the left-handed Whopper, should be approached with skepticism, Boese says, but he cautions against reflexive hoax-spotting. On March 31, 2004, Google released the beta version of Gmail, which featured 1 GB of free storage, cavernous compared to other e-mail provider offerings. That was the same day the company unveiled its Googlelunaplex plans. The moon joke and the generosity of Gmail's 1 GB storage caused some nerds to sense a con and insist—wrongly—that Gmail was a giant April Fools' Day hoax.

******
For a GoogleGulp of hoaxes, check out Alex Boese's
book Hippo Eats Dwarf: A Field Guide to Hoaxes and Other B.S. What hilarious media-generated April Fool's Day hoax have I missed? Send your nominations to slate.pressbox@gmail.com.

Online Ruler - How to Copy Website Layouts

By Andy Duframe

Finding the dimensions of an online image or graphic is easy enough. Just right click and check properties. But finding the dimensions of website layouts - like tables, panels, and menu bars is not quite as easy. Here are few tricks I use to get an inside look at website layouts using an online ruler, the page source, and CSS files.

Online Ruler
This is a small program that you download to your computer. Once installed, the software launches a transparent window over your computer screen with pixel rulers along the top and left side. If you mouse over the bottom right corner, you'll see that you can shrink or expand the box, with a constant readout of the exact dimensions of the box. Drag the box around to different sections of the page to get exact dimensions in pixels.

Page Source
Looking at the html code of a website can often give you the exact dimensions of its layout. Most web browsers include a menu option for viewing the html code of a web page. With Internet Explorer, look for the page menu option and select page source. This will open the html code in Notepad. Search (ctrl + f) for table width and td width. If a web page uses tables for its basic layout, these dimensions will be easy to find.

CSS file
Websites that use cascading style sheets (css) in place of tables will not show layout dimensions in the html source code. Those specific numbers are in the .css file for that page. To see the CSS file for a particular website, open the page source html code (see above) and search for .css in the text (this is usually at the top of the page). The code should look something like this: /css/mystyle.css

Next go to your browser window and add this code to the root directory of the URL address. Nine out ten times this will open the CSS file, usually in whatever html editor you have installed on your computer or in notepad. Now look through the CSS file for the word "width" to see the exact dimensions of all tables and columns. This method might take more time than an online ruler, but it gives you more accurate results.

These are all points in the city's favour as a starting point for further exploration of the delights around Barcelona - but what about the attractions of the city itself?

Well, architecturally speaking Barcelona has it all - it is world renowned for its modernistic Gaudi structures and yet it is also famous for its Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture too. Have Made The Decision To Quit Smoking Yet?

By Tsuyoshi E. Suzuki

Nicotine is considered one of the most additive substances on the Earth and it takes time to rid the body of its presence and effects. So if you are in the market to quit smoking, which you should if you are a smoker, you need to be aware that there will be obstacles and one of these obstacles is overcoming nicotine withdrawal urges. Nicotine itself is an addictive drug that is naturally present in tobacco plants. It is so addictive that it rivals drugs like cocaine and heroine. It doses are gradually lowered as the treatment progresses.

Smokers who live after a heart attack are the most likely to quit for good. They're very motivated. Find a reason for quitting before you have no choice. They don't know everything about their habit, as it is the nature of habits to blind us to the mechanisms by which they enslave us. They often say that cigarettes help them deal with stress and that having too much stress makes it hard to quit. Stress is one of the most common reasons many smokers go back to smoking.

Smokers have to be de-hypnotised as much as hypnotised. They often say that it is very difficult to quit smoking. This might be true to an extent, however if the smokers apply right and effective methods, smoking cessation may become a reality for all. They face massive withdrawal symptoms during and after they have quit smoking. There are various quit smoking aids which help the smoker overcome these withdrawal symptoms.

Smokers may consciously want to quit smoking, due to the terrible smell and the effects that smoking has on their health. The decision to quit smoking is yours to make but once you have made the decision, you should try as hard as you can.

Addiction actually means there are powerful physical and emotional urges and needs, which overpower the willpower of smokers forcing them to surrender. A strong resolve to quit, professional treatment to resist these needs or a reduction in the frequency and intensity of their occurrences will surely help in overcoming the addiction. Addiction to nicotine gives rise to physiological changes, changes that could alter the mood changes and performance ability of you the smoker. If you have given thought to abandoning your habit, you might want to take a self survey.

Secondhand smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals; 200 are poisons; 43 cause cancer.
Secondhand smoke comes from two places: smoke exhaled by the person who smokes and smoke from the end of a burning cigarette. It is the third leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., killing a total of approximately 53,000 nonsmokers per year. Consider asking the person to "take it outside" and not smoke in your presence to protect your own health.

Nicotine is an addiction, and if treated as such will always stay under your control. All you need to do to control it for a day, a week, a month, a year, a decade, or in reality, a lifetime is to always remember to never take another puff!

How To Find Out Whether A Diamond Is Real or Fake?

By Gary Marjani

You want to know whether a diamond is real or fake?

1. Visit a reputed jewelry store in your area. The jewelers can test diamond and figure out how much it is worth. Jewelers have ways to test the molecular structure of a diamond and determine whether it is real diamond. Most of the jewelry store can do free of charge. Ask before store does any testing.

2. A weighing test can be used to find out the difference between fake and real diamond. For example, the weight of cubic zirconium is approximately 50% more than a real diamond of the same shape and size.

3. Fog Test. Just fog the diamond blowing air from mouth. If diamond holds the fog, then it is fake because real diamonds disperse heat quickly. This test may not be reliable due to oil layers and dirt on the diamond stone. Make sure you can clean diamond before doing this test.

4. If you put the diamond under ultra violet light, real diamond radiates blue color light. A real diamond reflects the light throughout the stone and it glitters and becomes a rainbow.

5. One of the famous known tips is to scratch glass with diamond. If glass scratches, it is real diamond.

6. Diamonds can also be tested by a hand held device known as probe which conducts heat through the stone and triggers a response, usually a beep or a flashing light. The fake diamonds actually have more color reflected, and they also have a pretty good amount of shine.

7. Most jewelers used the Mohs scale which ranks diamond. This means that sapphires, rubies and garnets are higher in ranking and hence can scratch glass too.

8. Check closely the wear and tear on the diamond. For example, cubic zirconia is not as durable as a diamond and may show signs of wear and tear.

9. Finally, you should get diamond appraised by an independent appraiser. Appraiser must be affiliated with a professional organization such as the American Society of Appraisers. It is important to ask for a certificate indicating the value and characteristics of the diamond.

How To Make Money By Blogging

By Justin K. Grayman

One of the most profitable online business innovations ever to be ignited was constituted by regular journalistic web logs transforming into a popular online business tool - The business blog.

Business oriented blogs are the newest trend to promote another site. And they can help you save thousands of dollars and provide you great business opportunities with a low financial or otherwise, energy expenditure. Not only are they free to use but they are also user-friendly, can be customized, and can be a flexible medium for circulating useful information for effective positioning of your products in the market.

Aside from profiting by gaining clientele for your products through utilizing your own blog, you can also garner patronage or testimonials over previous clients who had been satisfied with your services and even institute yourself as an expert in your field when you post information about your subject of expertise and exhibit your skill and knowledge on matters and topics of which you can be given the authority. Such reputation for subject mastery is a viable means that can increase your sales and consumer opinion.

A blog is known as a public online diary in which you can make regular updates, and also have other people discuss and comment on your postings - Which can be the latest news on your products, services, company, promotions, etc. Business oriented blogs have acquired lots of attention, as it is the easiest way for salesmen and saleswomen to connect with customers and other prospects. Entrepreneurs have discovered that business blogs help them substantially in getting higher sales because their services and newest information are spread very easily. With consistent updates, their customers are well-informed and well-accustomed.

There are many consumers out there who make use of blogs to find the products and services they desire. It is recorded that 30 percent of 50 million Internet users are blog readers - Imagine the number of possible audiences you can attract if you will advertise your product through blogs. Business blogging may be hard to manage. If you do not use it properly, it can cause you some embarrassment with the feedback of your prospects and consistent viewers. High Income With No Investment

By Melvin Polatnick

Having a degree as a guidance counselor is no guarantee that its holder will have the ability to help others. Many times the person with the degree will need guidance themselves. If they felt confident in their ability to guide others they would not waste precious time going to college. But would become very wealthy at an early age. That is what I like most about being a Life skills coach there is no diploma or certification needed to get into this business, the only thing that counts are results.

There are people that are born leaders. They are blessed with a sense of direction that is unshakable. Even if they chose not to be financially or socially successful that earthly focus is still with them. Some have decided to become a Life Skills Coach to help those that have lost their way. They know that they have innate abilities, and don't need certification from people who sell their diplomas to anyone that can afford to buy one.

The Life skills Coach has many enemies. Most are college graduates that don't want to see people giving guidance without paying their dues. Some of those graduates have spent over eight years in college and have paid over one hundred thousand dollars to earn a diploma. They feel that they alone should have the opportunity to sell their guidance. Our sympathy is with them, but it is wrong to interfere with a business person who has a natural talent to help others without having a diploma.

To those that have a natural talent to help the bewildered and misled there is a calling for you.
Print up some business cards stating your title as a Life Skills Coach and pass them out to people you believe need your help. Many after looking into your eyes will instinctively understand that you can help them. Also put a small add in your local newspaper stating your specialty. It might be helping people stop smoking or any other bad habit. You will soon have your appointment calendar filled. There is no large investment in this small business, it can be run from your home with the kitchen table as your desk.

If you can help just a few people quit smoking or lose weight those happy people will tell others about your talents. Even without a diploma or certification you will be recognized. Most of all, you will be your own boss in a successful business, and will have earned the right to call yourself a Life Skills Coach.
