Why Women Are the Best in Sales

By Leanne Hoagland-Smith

Women in business are the best in sales because the results speak for themselves. During the last 10 years, women owned firms grew at a faster rate than all other firms. Women now control or own 40% of all privately held U.S. firms. This translates into 10.4 million women business owners of the 26 million privately held businesses.

So why are women in business becoming such a reckoning force especially in sales? To answer that question one needs to look at the definition of sales. After being in sales for over 30 years, I have come to define sales as:

Sales is an emotional and logical process where a buyer and a seller are engaged in a mutually beneficial relationship that involves the exchange of something, usually money, for something, usually a product or service, that will meet specific needs both known and unknown of the buyer.

Selling is all about emotions. Most women understand emotions far better than men because after all they have been conditioned to believe that they are emotional creatures.

Women also understand processes from cleaning to getting everyone where they need to be. I believe that most women are always looking for a way to improve their daily processes so that they can even get work done.

Women look to build long term relationships. They are not after big sale, but rather look to have the customer for years. Their intuitive sense to building lasting relationships results in creating exceptional customer loyalty.

Women know about what is mutually beneficial. For most women, their ego states are not as high as men. They are much more apt to make referrals and look to help others because they understand that business is truly about relationships.

Women whether in sales or as women business owners know their strengths in sales. Their strengths just to name a few are:
  • Communication especially active listening
  • Core values of quality and exceptional customer service
  • Flexibility to meet clients’ needs
As the first decade of the 21st century moves forward, women will gain even greater momentum in selling and truly will be the recognized as the best sales people.
