London Calling - The City of Old and the City of New

By Elisha Burberry

As far as cities go, there are few that can rival London’s bold, brash and bustling vibrancy. Not only is it a modern, cosmopolitan epicentre of international activity, it is also steeped in history, having been settled for almost two thousand years, including periods of Roman and even Viking rule.

It could be said that London has more than its fair share of iconic images, from Big Ben and Tower Bridge to Buckingham Palace and red double-decker buses. But these photo-friendly attractions may only offer limited entertainment for the snap-happy tourist, and as beautiful and historically significant as they are, it’s important to remember that London has so much more to offer. In fact, there’s no shortage of things to do in London that will appeal to all interests and budgets.

For starters, there’s the British Museum which is open every day and has free entry. It holds in trust for the UK one of the finest collections of art and antiquities in existence, including the Rosetta Stone which dates from 196 BC, and its subsequent discovery in 1799 which led to the deciphering of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Then there is the London Eye; the world’s tallest observation wheel, located on the banks of the River Thames and offering unparalleled views of the capital's skyline.

For outdoor activities, London doesn’t disappoint, as it has five football teams in England’s Premier League. So whether it’s a ticket for a title-decider or a tour of Arsenal’s impressive new Emirates stadium, there’s a lot on offer. Furthermore, London has plenty of sprawling parklands including Hyde Park and Regents Park which offer everything from boating, tennis and cricket to cycling, jogging and, perhaps more appealingly, fine-dining by the Serpentine Lake.

If that doesn’t appeal, then there’s also the opportunity to engage in some retail therapy in many of London’s shopping hotspots, including Covent Garden, which has everything from small boutiques to large High Street stores, not to mention an abundance of pubs, cafes and street performers that make Covent Garden a lively experience.

But, perhaps the one aspect of London that makes it such a prominent player in the world community is its position as a major transport hub, which consists of five international airports, a port and the largest underground railway system in Europe, in terms of route length. It also has a direct train-link with Europe via the Channel Tunnel, making it possible to reach central London from Paris in less than three hours without having to go near an airport.

With such connections to the international community, it’s little wonder that so many people choose to visit London, with more than 26 million overnight visits in 2006. And with London set to host the Olympics in 2012, the demand for hotels in London can only intensify, as it prepares to welcome even more visitors in the build up to one of the world’s greatest sporting events.

With its activities, vibrancy and accessibility, London seems to have all roads leading to it - sending out the aura that London is indeed calling.

Visit London

By Sunil Tanna

London is the capital city, and by a quite considerable margin, the largest city of both England and the UK as a whole. The term "City of London" (as well as "The Square Mile" or just "The City") is used mainly to refer to a very small (1 square mile - 2.6 square km) area that formed the ancient core of the conurbation, and which is today the most important center of the financial industry. The conurbation as a whole is referred to "Greater London" or simply "London", and even this is largely surrounded by further built-up and urban areas.
Approximately 8.5 million people live in Greater London, with perhaps 14 million in the metropolitan area.

As the former capital of a globe-spanning empire, London is home to people of many races, cultures and languages. Many of these people have their roots in former British colonies, but there European, South American, Turkish, Greek, Kurdish, Iranian, Arab and other communities too. While it would be incorrect to say that there have never been tensions, the communities get along remarkably well, and it is not at all unusual to go to school, live and work with people from diverse backgrounds. This cultural diversity has contributed not only greatly to the character of the city, but to arts, festivals, music and cuisine.

There are many tourist attractions in London, too many too mention in a brief article, but some must-see sights include Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament (including Big Ben), the Tower of London, the Millenium Wheel, Greenwich Observatory and Madame Tussaud's wax museum. Visitors to the city will also want to catch a theater production in the West End, see the London's many excellent museums and art galleries, check out the city's nightlife, and sample the variety of British, Anglo-Indian and international restaurants available.

Sightseeing In London

By Ray L. Walberg

London is one of the cultural capitals of Europe and has loads of sightseeing and activities for tourists of all ages. There are an innumerable amount of things to see and do in London but here are some "must see" sights that shouldn’t be left out of your travel itinerary.

The British Museum is vast and is so big that seeing everything in one day is near impossible. The Greek and Egyptian exhibits are especially impressive and are considered by some to be the best permanent museum installations of their kind.

The British Airways London Eye can be seen from all over central London; it is the tallest observation wheel in the world. Views from this wheel are impressive to say the least and it will give you a better orientation for your remaining sightseeing.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is over 300 years old and remains a spiritual landmark for Great Brittan. It has hosted weddings and funerals for Great Brittan’s royalty and leaders. The architecture is impressive and a beautiful piece of history.

The National Gallery located at Trafalgar Square is another must see that is impossible to cover in just one visit. The art contained at the National Gallery ranges from Leonardo da Vinci to Monet and is sure to impress even those who are not art savvy.

The London Zoo at Regents Park is home to an impressive amount of animals and is a big draw for families with children. There are daily animal shows and it is so large that two days should be given to see the entire park.

Another gallery that is sure to interest all ages is the Tate Modern Museum. The art installations use different kinds of mediums and range from Andy Warhol to Matisse. The building itself is a work of art and is a “must see” on your trip to London.

The Tower of London is another sight not to be missed. It was built of bricks imported from France and is most popular for its many executions. It was even dubbed the “bloody tower” after it was speculated that Richard III murdered his nephews there.

Another museum to take in is the Natural History Museum which contains one of the world’s largest collections of dinosaur fossils. This is another big hit with the children but is sure to impress adults as well.

If you’re in the mood for a fun and frightful experience do not miss The Madame Tussaud’s Experience. It’s a wax museum full of ghoulish figures; some of them are electronically animated which adds to the excitement.

Finally a trip to London would not be the same without a visit to Westminster Abbey which has become one of London’s most stunning churches. It is not only an architectural masterpiece but it is also the burial place for many famous figures.

Ray Walberg usually publishes long articles on themes similar to Benidorm and Costablanca. His comments on Costablanca and Costa Blanca can be discovered on his web publications. London is a fun and exciting city for all ages. Its not like Costablanca and Costa Blanca in Spain but it does have a flavour of its own. Ensure you include as many “must see” sights as possible to get the full London experience and the most out of your vacation.
