Best Video Games of the Summer

By Christine Flanders

I am a thirty-seven year old female. I am not particularly computer savvy. I don’t know what most of the features on my cell phone are for. I don’t text. But I love video games like the proverbial fat kid loves cake. I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, a gamer. I’m not even very good at playing video games. What I am is persistent.

I am perfectly willing to sit, unwashed and disheveled in my p.j.s, for fourteen hours straight trying to perfect that certain little left jump, spin, and flip combo that will allow me to pull that lever before the spiked ceiling collapses on me for the umpteenth time. That being said, here are a few reasons why other computer illiterates like me need to get off the board games and get on board with the video game revolution.

Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition: Yes, Lara Croft is back for another adventure, this one just released in June. What is wonderful about the Tomb Raider franchise are the exotic jungle locales, the complex puzzles, and of course the Indiana Jones motif. Like all of Lara’s adventures, the premise is presumably an effort to acquire some obscure artifact before it falls into the hands of evildoers (though I don’t know many legitimate archaeologists who carry automatic weapons and often leave the ancient ruins in shambles).

Originally appearing in 1996, Tomb Raider was the first game to successfully immerse the player in a pseudo three-dimensional environment. Rather than the linear Pitfall Harry-style of the popular Super Mario Bros. games, Lara could move into the depth of the frame and manipulate much of her environment.

The Anniversary Edition brings back all that is fun about the best Tomb Raider incarnations. Lara travels to Peru, Greece and Egypt. The landscapes are detailed, inviting and executed on a grand scale. She has excellent maneuverability and much of the trick is getting a handle on how to make her move with precision.

World of Warcraft: Yes, this has been around for a couple of years now, but how many video games let you interact with other players online, in real time, all over the world? Most of the “people” you will encounter in WoW are the avatars of other players whose strategy is spontaneous and unique, rather than part of predetermined program reacting to a single player’s actions. A newcomer to WoW will have to choose his or her character traits from one of ten different races.

Each race originates from a home country and that is where individuals choosing a character from that race begin the game. Players gain experience and elevate in rank by completing missions. Elevation in rank allows entry to other countries. The landscape is of the Tokien variety—often resembling something from the Lord of the Rings. Character mobility is fairly rudimentary: forwards, backwards, left, and right.

But the real strength of WoW lies in the necessity to interact with other players. Many missions can only be accomplished by a group of players banding together their vastly different skills to overcome an obstacle. Another really interesting thing about WoW is that it has become so popular it has spawned a virtual economy. For real currency a player can buy or sell WoW gold, weapons, and other virtually valuable items on eBay. WoW is an ever evolving world. The latest expansion pack, “The Burning Crusade” adds a new continent.

Bioshock: Welcome to Rapture, an underwater utopia created by scientists in the 1940’s looking to escape the horror of two World Wars and the looming threat of “The Bomb.” Rapture is a haven hidden on the bottom of the ocean. Unfortunately something has gone very wrong in Rapture.

This first person shooter-style game unfolds in a shadowy, art-deco cityscape. Most of the inhabitants are dead and the ones that are left are not quite…well…right. Let’s just say there has been a large amount of genetic enhancement going on in Rapture, not all of it for the better.
What is unusual about Bioshock that it is entirely interactive. In most video games, the only parts of the environment that the player can interact with are the ones that lead to the next stage. The rest is just scenery.

Not so with Bioshock. The creators boast that this game is all about choices. Each player can choose what to explore and follow their own moral compass in deciding how to play the game.
Each experience will be entirely unique. Available on X Box 360, the graphics are high definition1080p quality. Sleek and stylish, the stills alone made me want to drop $450 on an X Box. The water looks amazing. Bioshock was released Monday, August 21, 2007.

Summertime is a Perfect Time for Rituals

By Nina Amir

It's getting hotter and the days are getting longer. Memorial Day has come and gone, so it must be summer. While most of us look forward to summer vacations, June, July and August also provide great months for creating and performing any number of fun, interesting and spiritual rituals.

Don't let the fact that you haven't ever performed a ritual stop you. And if you have performed rituals previously, summer's a great time to come up with creative new ways to take them to a deeper spiritual level.

So, why is summertime the perfect time for rituals making and performing? Because the warm and bright mornings beckon to us to come out with the chirping of the birds and celebrate the rising of the sun, the blooming of the flowers, the beauty of the natural world around us. The equally warm and late evenings allow us time after our daily chores or work to light a candle or a fire and to join in the crickets' song and to look up at the heavens and feel our connection to the universe and to God.

Yes, the weather and the length of the days give us amply opportunity to take a few minutes or a few hours to create and perform whatever rituals we like. Here are four examples of rituals you can try this summer.

1. Greeting the dawn: Begin getting up earlier in the morning, going outside and greeting the day with a ritual. You might want to have a tea ceremony. Or go into your garden and sit and meditate. Then cut some flowers and bring them inside with you. Place them on an altar, light a candle and offer up an intention for the day. Or simply go outside right after you awaken, stretch to the sun, touch your toes (or the ground, if you can) and then turn around stopping to acknowledge each of the four directions. Before you go back inside, recite aloud a list of things for which you feel grateful.

2. Four Elements Release Ritual: Go to the beach (or a lake) and have a bonfire. Before you light the fire, offer an intention that you are creating this fire for the purpose of releasing the old habits, patterns, issues – whatever you no longer want or need – from your life. Then, on a piece of paper, write down all the things you want to release (debt, eating disorders, health problems, bad jobs, etc.). Fold up the paper and before placing it in the fire, say, "I now release these to the Universe or God. Something better is now coming to me for the highest good of all concerned."

Take a moment to look at the smoke rising from the fire. Say aloud, "This smoke is now cleansing me of those things I do not want and raising my desires to a place where they will be made manifest." Now take some breadcrumbs or pieces of bread and go though this same list while throwing them into the ocean one by one. Be sure to recite the intention before you begin and the affirmation when you are finished. Last, find enough rocks to represent each of the things you want to release, go through the same basic process as before but this time bury each rock in a shallow hole you dig in the sand. When you have released your unwanted issues to the four elements, simply say, "So be it, so it is."

3. Offering up Gratitude: Before you go to bed, go outside and sit somewhere where you can see the stars. Light a candle, and while staring at it's brightness in the dark of the night, feel appreciation for the light it offers. As you fix your gaze on the flame, begin reciting all the things you are grateful for that occurred during the day. Imagine them rising with the flame, reaching upwards, as if your gratitude is being handed off to the darkness by the tip of the flame. When you are done, look up at the stars. (It's easiest to actually lie down.) Gaze at the stars and try to feel what it is like to be on a planet – the Earth – hurtling through space. Try to get the feeling of this planet being such a small part of the greater Universe. Feel grateful for being a part of that larger whole and for the forces of nature – or God – that keep your planet safe, and, therefore, you safe. Feel awe and wonder for the vastness of this place you call home. Then, offer up a prayer – of gratitude, or petition.

4. Planting Ritual: Each time you place a plant in a pot or in the ground, or throw some seeds into the earth, imagine that you are planting a seed of change as well. If there is a particular change you desire, voice your intention to create that change as you plant the seed. Then, every day, talk to your seed (seedling, plant) about that change and how you plan on creating it. Speak of the steps you have taken or plan to take that day. Be sure to nurture the plant with water and fertilizer and generally to care for the plant in the same way that you are nurturing and caring for your change.

Summer Time Job Searching

By Carole Martin

The temptations are there – warm, lazy, casual days, when the shoes of choice are "flip flops." Taking the summer off and getting back into the groove of things when the "kids go back to school" would be very easy. You think to yourself, "Nothing's happening during the summer anyway – everybody goes on vacation during these months."

Stop! This is not the time for giving in to those pleasures and giving up on your job search, at least not all the way. You are better off pacing yourself during the summer months, and not stopping your search altogether.

Currently, the numbers of jobs being added to the workforce are reported as a positive sign that things may be opening up on the job front. You don't want to miss out on new opportunities or let someone else get that great job you've been waiting for – do you?

Here are six ways to get through your job search this summer and still enjoy some sun and fun – guilt free.

1. Get up earlier. The sun is up earlier and the early morning hours are much cooler than at high noon. Try leaving your blinds open or shades up and rise when the sun begins to stream through the window. Try to remember what it was like getting up for work on those cold, winter mornings. One bonus to early rising is that the house can be quieter. Hit the Internet before the rest of the family or household is even out of bed.
2. Set a schedule for yourself. Plan to work at your job search for a certain number of h
ours each day – 2,4, or 6 hours. Stick to the schedule that you set for yourself. If you work on the schedule that has a beginning and an end, you can quit on time and still enjoy the rest of the day – guilt free.

3. Take advantage of new networking opportunities. Getting outside more often or going to new places, will expose you to more people. Be sure and make contacts whenever and wherever possible. The best networking is done in the least expected places. You may be sitting at the community pool and connect with a neighbor you haven't seen all winter. Suddenly you have a new contact.

4. Use discretion when networking. Remember, it's summer for everyone. Don't take away from the relaxation of the day by "talking-shop." Be careful to use common sense and good manners when networking. You are never seeking a job – you are seeking information. Conversations can lead down new paths if you don't force the issue.

5. Work in the cool of the evening. Some people work best in the evening. If you are one of these people it is best for you to work when you are your most creative. Play during the day and set for yourself an evening schedule to work the Internet, to do research and to send e-mails.
Contacting people by phone when working in the evening is difficult, however. You may have to work in some day hours to connect with people when necessary.

6. Forget your search and enjoy. When you decide to enjoy a summer picnic or an all-day outing, let go of your job search and enjoy the day. Permit yourself a vacation day from your "job" of job search. Give yourself permission to have some fun and not feel like you should be out there job-hunting. The idea is to feel guilt free and to have some summer fun.

Although job hunting is certainly a key goal for anyone who has been out of work, it is also a good idea to take time "to smell the ocean" once in a while. You will find yourself refreshed and more energized if you take time to enjoy family and friends. By giving yourself permission to take the day off, you can "play" without the guilty feelings that you "should be home working." By setting some limits for yourself, you can work hard and still play. You might even surprise yourself by how productive you can be as a result. As the slogan goes, "You deserve a break today!"
