The following are some of the basic things you would start with once you have created your website. Many people reading this would already have done this.

Manually submit your website to the major search engines. Use websites like addme.com or similar.

Determine the top pages of your website and Optimize each them for a particular keyword or search phrase.
Make a custom 404 error page for your website redirecting people to your home pa
ge.

Add a link to your webpages which can“bookmark this site” .

Keep an option to Invite friends. "Tell a Friend", "Email to friend" etc.

Add an RSS feed to your blog.

Add the buttons to social bookmarking sites on your webpages. like digg.com, etc.

If you site has registration. Send account reminder emails to those who have not signed in after they registered.

Print out business cards with URL of your website. Even better Make Stickers of your website URL stick it on your car , house or office.

There are many popular forums on the internet, that have thousands of visitors and posters per day. Here are some key steps to increase traffic by posing in forums and online communities.

Find the big forums with huge members and activity. Join atleast 3-5 such forums.

Most forums allow User Signatures with Links. Create attractive signatures with links to your website.

Lesser the links in your signature, more likely the person will click it.

Many forums have advertising boards where you can advertise your business for FREE. Write a catchy advertisement & post it there. Keep posting it 2-3 times a week, assuming you are not violating the forum rules

Try to increase your post count, REPUTATION, Trader ratings etc. This will all help in building trust with other forum members.

Make friends in Forums , you can use your friendship to do link exchange and advertising and mutually help.

Answer other people's questions, especially if you can link to your website. Write a good article that will help others, then if you put your website link at the end , it will look fair.
Be a good Netizen, report spams, follow forum rules .

Offer some free service to the users. This will make people read your post and signatures & can get you some reputation points.
