Washington (the State, Not DC) Is Now on the National Political Map
By Ed Bagley
If you have ever watched late night talk show host Jay Leno do his Jaywalking segment
on the tube you are aware of how ignorant recent college graduates and the general public are about Washington State.
Colleges are apparently not teaching American history these days, or students are not learning it.
Not only do these dunderheads not know where Washington State is, they do not appreciate its significance like politicians in the current Presidential Race for the White House do.
Discerning readers and viewers might wonder why Hillary and Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Mitt Romney, Rudy Guiliani and President George W. Bush spend so much time traveling from Washington, DC to Washington State.
The answer is simple—voters.
Washington State has become at least the 14th most populous state in the nation and perhaps the 13th (passing Massachusetts) with 6.5 million residents.
Few people know or realize that after California, the most populous state with 36+ million, Washington is the second most populous state among the 11 Western states.
Arizona is No. 3 at 6.1 million, followed by Colorado, Oregon, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming at 515,000. Only Colorado—No. 4—has more than 3.8 million.
Washington also has some money, ranking nationally as the 16th highest in per capita income ($35,479). Among Washington's big bucks companies are Boeing, Costco Wholesale and Microsoft.
Once all but ignored during Presidential election years, candidates from both Republican and Democratic parties now make frequent visits to Washington.
They come not just for fundraising among Washington's well-heeled executives and professionals, but also to impact the electorate as Washington is now a state that must be fought and won during a close campaign.
