Start Your Holiday Shopping Now

By Meagan Farrell

I'll bet you are expecting an article about getting organized as part of your New Year's resolution? Surprise! I am actually going to tell you to go shopping!! January and February are the best times to shop. The stores are marking everything down to clear out inventory and bring new items. Personally, I spend a lot of time at Target around this time, waiting for the 75 % off clearance sales to start.

Why am I telling you to buy things? Because, if you start your holiday shopping now, you will have much less stress come November/December. Here is an idea: Take several paper shopping bags and write the names of those you need to shop for each year on them (one name per bag). Keep these bags in your closet, garage or hiding spot.

As you are out shopping, check out the sales with your gift recipients in mind. As you find things for your loved ones, bring them home and put them in the appropriate bag. As birthdays or holidays come up, you can go to that person's bag and find already purchased gifts for them. Not only will you save a ton of money, but you will save a lot of time and stress. Instead of frantically running around at the last minute looking for the perfect gift, buy it when you see it. Chances are it will cost less and it will really be the ideal present.

By Josh Taylor

The climate here is mild in winter with snow cover from December to April but there is plenty of snow around. The Bulgarian government has recently committed to developing the resort further under a scheme called 'Super Borovets', with the aim of turning it into a world-class, year-round resort.

Skiing in Borovets
Although a well established resort, Borovets has all the facilities and comforts of a modern winter sports centre. The resort has hosted the Alpine ski World Cup twice and offers visitors a wide range of world-class ski runs to suit all abilities from novice to expert. Skiers here can also take part in cross-country skiing, ski-doo, ice skating, snowboarding, biathlons and ski jumping. The biathlon track here is held to be one of the best in Europe.

The resort's ski facilities are excellent and will be improved further during the 'Super Borovets' initiative. The resort has around 19 ski runs split into three areas (Sitniakoyo, Markoudzhik and Yastrebets). International signs and markings are used across the resort which well maintained and serviced. There are a range of lifts including a gondola, chair lifts, drag lifts and baby drag lifts.

Accommodation in Borovets
The resort offers a full range of accommodation both for people who wish to go self-catering and for people who wish to stay in hotels. The hotels in Borovets include high-quality luxury hotels and mid-range and smaller options. There are plenty of hotels here due to the size and popularity of the resort. People looking to rent accommodation are also given plenty of choice. Self-catering options include chalets, bungalows, houses, villas and apartments. Visitors can choose to rent new properties or older, traditional homes and there are options available for all size of party.

Entertainment in Borovets
The resort offers all kind of options for eating-out and night-life. There are many restaurants, bars, cafes, discos and clubs in the town to suit all tastes. Many visitors like to try out local cuisine but restaurants also offer a full range of other options here from simple snacks through to classic modern European cooking.

Local attractions
Many visitors describe Borovets as being like a big friendly village. Although the town isn't large it is still full of local charm and tradition. The countryside in the area is lovely in both winter and summer and many people choose to spend their spare time walking and hiking and horse riding is also available. Taking a trip up Mount Musala is a popular option for many. Visitors should also make sure to visit the Bistrista Palace. This old royal hunting lodge is worth a trip in itself but make sure to take a look at the local woodcarvings there which are a local tradition.

Those looking for attractions further afield can visit Sofia which is around an hour's drive away. There are a lot of museums and churches worth a look here including the National History Museum and the St Nikolai Church.

Conclusion
It's not surprising that so many people choose to return to Borovets after their first ski trip. The resort offers high quality skiing and facilities, the locals are friendly and there is plenty to do in the town. Although the most popular resort in the country, costs are still relatively low compared to the UK which makes it even easier to enjoy a stay in Borovets!

Beat Motion Sickness During Your Holiday Travel

By Dan Beldowicz

If you or someone in your family suffers from motion sickness then you have an extra element to prepare for when you think about traveling for the holidays. Not everyone experiences motion sickness the same and it may not happen every time. For example some people get motion sick on a cruise ship but not while they are in a car. Others may get queasy when they are on a train but not on an airplane.

Common symptoms of motion sickness include sweating, nausea, dizziness, saliva in the mouth that is more than usual, and vomiting. Most people know when it is coming on and do all they can to minimize the effects. Many women many suffer from motion sickness when they are pregnant due to the changes taken place in their body. Children are also quite susceptible to it as well.

There are plenty of things you can do on your own to help prevent the effects of motion sickness from occurring. Many adults find they don't suffer from motion sickness if they drive the car.
This is because the sensors in their brain view the scenery flashing by differently when they are in the driver's seat. This is why so many get sick when they travel by train. If you are susceptible to motion sickness as a passenger in a car avoid a window seat on a train. You also want to avoid those seats that face backwards.

Children should avoid trying to play games or read books in a moving vehicle if they suffer from motion sickness. They should also ride in the middle seat in order to offer them a view out the front of the vehicle instead of from their peripheral vision on the side windows. Offer them light snacks before travel such as crackers and water. Avoid having them travel on an empty stomach or after eating a large meal.

For those that still suffer from motion sickness, an over the counter or a prescription medication may be required for successful holiday travel to take place. Make sure you carefully follow the instructions of such medications. Don't exceed the recommended dose. If it says to take it with food or water then make sure you do so. Some of them require consumption during a specific period of time prior to your departure so pay attention to this important detail.

Even so, no method or medication is 100% foolproof when it comes to motion sickness. Some people experience it only once in a while and others deal with it all the time. Try to get to some fresh air if possible. If you are on an airplane turn on the air above you and take slow, deep breaths. You will find bags offered in case you do end up having to vomit. You can also try to make your way to the bathroom where you will have more privacy.

While it may be embarrassing you need to understand you aren't the only one that has problems with motion sickness. The fact that the mode of transportation you are taking may be full during the holiday season can be stressful but you will never have to see most of them ever again. You may want to carry extra clothing with you for those in your part that do suffer from motion sickness, especially children who may end up vomiting on their clothing.

Don't let your holiday travel plans be stopped due to your fear of suffering from motion sickness. Do all you can to subside the symptoms on your own. If that isn't effective then try various over the counter products. As a last resort as your doctor for a prescription medication to help ensure you can get through the travel process so you can enjoy your holidays. If you find certain types of transportation are more difficult for you than others you should avoid them if possible.

Great Holiday Villas In Paphos Cyprus

By Kevinor Moore

Cyprus is the perfect Mediterranean Island paradise and boast some beautiful coastal resorts especially along the Western coast. Most of the Island has seen some major development over the last few years and this in turn has led to the creation of a very lucrative rental market.
Holiday villas in Paphos are only one example of the huge increase in this type of letting to tourist. With so much new property in Cyprus it is now becoming the norm to rent an apartment or house in favor of the traditional hotel package tour. In fact thanks to the growth in internet bookings people are opting to create their own holiday packages from the bottom up with separate flights, accommodation and car hire.

Villas in Paphos Cyprus may be getting more expensive to purchase but there is an eager market waiting to rent them. Medium sized houses and villas make the best investment because the cost of renting can be split between a larger group. Multiple bathrooms or separate ensuite facilities are a must too for multiple occupancy if owners are hoping to get repeat business. There is nothing worse than eight people fighting over one bath room and a downstairs loo every morning especially if you have teenagers in tow. A pool is probably another prerequisite for rentals even if the property is near the coast. People searching for holiday villas in Paphos and elsewhere in Cyprus are looking for a luxury holiday and that includes their own private swimming pool.

In an effort to secure that dream holiday home in Cyprus many buyers are now able to buy early before prices rise and its thanks to this booming rental market. Some astute investors are even self financing their holiday villas in Paphos by letting them out to tourist. The great thing about Paphos is that it is now recognized as an all year resort. This is the best news any property owner could wish to hear. Although rentals will be markedly cheaper during the short Cyprus winter they are still much more profitable than long term lets on the domestic market. The problem with long term rental stems from the low average wage on the Island which tends to self regulate rental values. Of course those renting out holiday villas in Paphos and other parts of the Island will be unaffected by this restraint. As way of an example a typical property that lets long term on the home market may realize cyp500. monthly whilst holiday rentals on the same unit could exceed cyp800 per week!

Even withstanding seasonal variations the renting of holiday villas in Paphos Cyprus makes a great financial argument. Those buyers that make the move now stand a good chance of having their dream home in the sun bought and paid for by the time they are ready to retire in Cyprus. With its superb Mediterranean climate and over 320 days of glorious sunshine every single year this beautiful Island paradise is sure to keep on attracting those eager rental customers year after year. It could be argued that holiday property makes the perfect investment because all you need to do is sit back, collect the rent and look forward to all those carefree years in the Cyprus sun. All the while not only could the property actually pay for itself but the value should steadily increase over time too. Plenty of good reasons then why investors and private buyers should consider the benefits of owning holiday villas in Paphos Cyprus.

Kevin Moore lives half the year in Cyprus where he writes regular articles about all things Cyprus including holidays and Cyprus property purchase. Find out more by visiting his web site here Villas In Paphos Cyprus

How to Cut Down On Holiday Spending Without Looking Cheap

By Lill Hawkins

No one wants to look like a grinch, but most of us reach a point in our holiday shopping where we realize that we're going to spend more than we want to if we get everything on our list. What to do... If you're a parent, you have two options: ramp down on the number and/or the cost of the gifts you get your loved ones or get everything and live on that recalled dog food you didn't really throw out but hid behind the furnace. It's probably only toxic to dogs, right?

Well, if you don't have a dog and have to go with the first option, I have some suggestions for really nifty toys and gifts that won't bust your budget. Believe me, I know from making Christmas clubs stretch to cover more family members than I have chin hairs. At one time, what with step-siblings, foster siblings, bio-siblings and all of their kids, I was aunt to over thirty little darlings, all of whom presented me with their list of demands, uh, lists by Thanksgiving. I still shudder when I think of that year when Cabbage Patch dolls were the most popular toy and what the gray-haired woman said when I snatched one out of her hand.( Well, she did push me out of the way with her cane.) But back to buying really nice toys on the cheap.

I like the classics, because they stay classics because kids like them. Games, whether card, board or outdoor, are always a hit. Or how about a wooden card holder for little hands? It's sooo frustrating when you drop your cards and everyone sees that Old Maid or Old Man, ya' know?
Some old favorites in the board game category include Monopoly, Risk, Trouble, Hi Ho Cherry-Oh, Life, and several versions of Trivial Pursuit. My favorite game is the Un-Game which has many versions and is non-competitive so no one loses and everyone wins. And don't forget checkers and chess.

Puzzles, especially quality wooden ones with pieces that really fit together, are something that preschoolers will do over and over again. Good for their self-esteem and their fine motor development. There are puzzles in every category: construction vehicles, emergency vehicles, dinosaurs, science and nature, everyday life, unusual and difficult puzzles. If there's a picture of it, there's a puzzle of it.

Stocking stuffers or little presents that you can wrap in bright paper and hand to a child can be more than dollar store gimcracks. If you do a little searching on the Net, you can find many smaller items for under $20. Look for sales at places that sell traditional, unique toys.

And don't be afraid to think outside the box. You can even give kids clothes if they're really trendy. And of course, there's stationary, arts and craft supplies, calendars, hair accessories and anything else that kids need all year 'round, not just during the holidays. And if all else fails, gift certificates and cold hard cash are an option. Just put them into the nicest card you can find and attach a premium candy bar or designer candy cane on them. Believe me, they'll be very happy to accept it. Come to think of it, so would I.

Lill Hawkins blogs about resources for finding safe toys for Toddlers to Teens and maintains a recall list at How to Find Safe Toys Check in daily for the latest toy recalls and a long list of alternatives to blah big-box gifts.

Enjoy a Cottage Holiday in Ireland

By Donald Spearson

Ireland is a gorgeous country known from its rugged beauty, dreamy landscaped and rich culture and folklore background. There is no escaping from a colourful past and a sense of history seeps though every old building. When rambling through the Irish countryside you will encounter ruins, cottages and even the remains of ancient castles and churches.

The best way to get to know Ireland and its beauty is by mixing in with the local population. Every Irish village has a traditional pub where you can drink, eat for little money and often you can enjoy some great live music here. There are many self-catering cottages available for rent in Ireland. All over the area you can stay in this traditional type of Irish housing and many cottages are historic buildings and have a rich past.

You can pick from over 30 locations if you want to stay in an Irish cottage and most cottages are built in locations where you will have some neighbors in cottages built as part of the same cluster. You can choose a cottage with a wholesome breakfast included or you can decide to cater for yourself. Make the most of the local fresh [produce markets and enjoy a home cooked meal with a view on the meadows of Ireland.

Ireland has many activities to offer. You can watch dolphins, try water skiing and there are even some great diving spots. You probably won’t want to leave your comfortable pub seat but if you do there is plenty to see and do in this wonderful country. The Irish people are known for their friendliness and it is not a rare thing to be invited to a pub feast or a home barbeque. You will be treated to strong beers and great music. What are you waiting for? Ireland will make you feel right at home.

Hawaii Christmas - Oahu Events, Holiday Airfares

By Cindy Blankenship

Christmas in Hawaii this year is as festive as ever, and some very well priced, holiday airfares can be found (at last check as low as $300 from US West Coast). Whether your vacation is budget or extravagant, you can create some beautiful holiday memories on Oahu.

Hawaiian Christmas memories are among my favorite remembrances of living in Hawaii.
Listening to the children belt out their favorites like "Here Comes Santa in a Red Canoe," and the Hawaiian version of "The 12 Days of Christmas," and hearing "Silent Night" sung in English and Hawaiian by an angelic choir on a balmy evening under the stars with palm trees swaying are experiences not to be missed.Just walking downtown is a delight during the holidays.

And I'll never forget arriving at the Honolulu Airport for the first time during the holiday season and being in awe of the towering tree all decked out with huge, lauhala woven pineapples and golden lights.

Holidays in Hawaii, especially Christmas are widely celebrated. This is a very churched community, but even many of the Buddhist families participate in Christmas traditions, especially the Japanese-Americans who come who have a reputation for loving to give gifts.
If you're visiting the islands for the holidays, you will find a myriad of Christmas events on Oahu, actually on all the islands, but more so on Oahu.

In Hawaii, Santa gives his reindeer a Christmas break and arrives in a canoe, barefoot, tanned and with his red furry pants rolled up. On Oahu, his first stop is, as it is for most of Hawaii's visitors, Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Keiki (children) visit their Hawaiian Santa at various cities on Oahu throughout the season.

While at Christmas time, many of the islanders enjoy watching the visitors in awe of this warm, friendly climate in the dead of winter, they also enjoy imagining what a white Christmas would be like. You'll hear many of the traditional mainland songs, like "Winter Wonderland" and "Jingle Bells."

Some Hawaiians though do have a white Christmas, that is if they're on the Big Island (island of Hawaii) and drive up above the tree line to the 10,000 foot high snowcapped peaks of Mauna Kea, transforming their boogie boards into sleds and building snowmen! With the current, cheap airfares from between Oahu and Neighbor Islands,a side trip from Oahu to the Big Island is more affordable than its been in a long time.

It's fun swapping tropical and white Christmas stories with locals. For us visitors it's especially fun to write home about how we spent our Christmas day on a beach! Some newcomers to Hawaii will even bring miniature trees down to the beach, although Hawaii has plenty Christmas trees. On Oahu,as on the other islands, trees from the mainland are sold. And, Hawaii has its own Christmas tree: the island Norfolk Pine. The tree doesn't have the spicy pine scent, but its largely spaced branches are wonderfully easy to decorate.

Hawaiian Christmas tree decorations are found everywhere. Craft fairs are great for finding local style ones: coconut frond woven ornaments, kukui nut and tapa cloth angels, Santas on surfboards in canoes and riding dolphins; along with beautiful wreaths made of island flowers and greenery.

Many of these craft fairs are events in themselves, complete with Hawaiian Christmas entertainment and food. You'll find many of these listed along with other holiday Oahu events in newspapers and free magazines at the airport.

Some of my favorite Oahu events at Christmas are the light displays in Honolulu and the music – choirs, orchestras and local style bands are found everywhere with free concerts at malls and on the beach. Adding to the holiday fun, many of Hawaii's most popular musicians like the Brothers Cazimero and Don Ho perform regularly in Waikiki.

The Honolulu City Lights (the city was given permission by Keola and Kapono Beamer to use the name of their all time hit song) is a spectacular display throughout Honolulu, including Waikiki, making Oahu a good pick for a Hawaiian holiday vacation.

The month-long, traditional festivities begin with the Kawaiahao Church Service in Honolulu (This was the first Christian church built in Hawaii and is extraordinary), the lighting of the City's 63-foot Norfolk Pine at Honolulu Hale (City Hall) and an electric parade and concert on December 3; however festivities continue throughout the holiday season.

For example, the Honolulu City Lights Trolley Tours run from December 8 to 30. The $2.50 fare (under age 4 free) benefits the Hawaii Food bank. For details, visit Honolulu Hale If you go, be sure to check out the other Oahu event calendars mentioned above as well as this one's. And check out the holiday airfares at places like Hawaiian Airlines and Hotwire.com.

Where to Find Holiday Work

By Ken C. Morris

Volunteering during your vacation is a wonderful way to give back to those in need and make you feel like you accomplished something special. Most people earn at least two weeks a year in vacation time, so taking a few of those days and donating some time to charity can really make a difference in your life and the lives of many others. There are many charity organizations that need volunteers to help serve meals, teach classes, build homes and activity centers, and other jobs. If you have experience in any of these areas or you want to learn a new skill, volunteering is a good way to do so.

Look in your community newspaper, church bulletin, or online to find organizations that are local. Call and ask which types of positions are available and give the organization the dates that you will be available. Even if it is just a few days, most organizations would be thrilled to have your help. Make sure you get all the details before committing your time so you can plan accordingly.

Because natural disasters can strike at any time, you want to volunteer to help clear debris, organize food drives, or deliver supplies to those who need them. This is a good way to use your vacation time, especially if you have a lot of days saved up. In these types of situations, being able to give time will be appreciated by rescue workers, other volunteers, and those you are helping.

Since many volunteer organizations plan events in advance, you will be able to plan your vacation around these events. Contacting these organizations is the best way to find out more information.

If you have teaching experience and want to visit a new part of the world, volunteering your time to teach English as a second language or other courses is a great way to learn about other cultures. This type of volunteer work will take longer than a few days, however. If you have a few weeks of vacation time saved, then you should consider this type of volunteer work. There are many countries that have programs in place that help people learn new languages and other skills.

Even if you cannot donate a lot of time, taking a long weekend here and there is enough time for you to help raise money for volunteer organizations by participating in organizing fundraisers, collection money, or by spreading the word about the organization to others. Many people volunteer to answer phones during telethons, go door to door for donations, or write press releases and other items that can be published in order to help an organization gain a little more exposure.

Donating your time is just as important as donating money. If you have traveled extensively, or you are looking to travel to another country you have not been to before, volunteering is one way to enjoy something new while helping others.

The technical writer Ken Morris is passionate about ideas related to Costa Dorada and Spain. Writing for publications, the columnist demonstrated his depth of understanding on topics dealing with Costa Blanca.

Have A 5 Star Holiday At 3 Star Rates

By Barry Allen

Ever dream of having a 5-star holiday without going broke! Well the dream can come true if you just know how to get the best rate. Travel and holiday accommodation can be expensive but today the market is full of unbeatable deals and you can get fabulous discounts if you book early, online, and off season.

Hotels and travel are most expensive during holiday season so if you want your family to have a great holiday then you need to:

• Spend holidays at home and plan a getaway vacation during off season. When hotels are not chock-a-block they run great packages, marketing promos, and discount rate offers. This is when you can book into a spa, resort or 5-star hotel and not feel the strain on your pocket.

• Throughout the year you should look for coupons or great getaway packages offered by your credit card company. Make use of these many of these include stay, meals, and trips for a set price at a great luxury hotel.

• Book early. Many hotels give discounts on rates if you make confirmed bookings with payment well in advance.

• Search the hotel directories on the World Wide Web for great offers. On the internet one can find deals, compare rates and facilities and book the holiday without leaving home.

• Check if your reward programs have any tie –ups with hotel chains. Many airlines and credit card giants have great networking and as a marketing exercise they offer their members unbelievable discounts on travel, stay, and pampering.

• Opt for a tour package. That way the whole family will have a great vacation at no extra costs. Many tour operators have tie-ups with big hotel chains and offer accommodation at wonderful places. By taking a tour you can see places and have a great vacation.

• If you are a great photographer and writer you could earn some of the money spent on the vacation by writing an illustrated article on the spot you vacationed in. Many travel magazines and websites are always looking for unusual and great material on travel spots.

• Very often if you are taking a long haul flight the airline will offer a free stop over in a destination of choice. Use this option and enjoy your stay. Before you firm up bookings find out from the travel agent or airline representative what your options are.

• If the family group is large choose the "group booking" option. Group rates are always lower than normal rates. Meet the hotel representative and ask whether the hotel will extend any special courtesies for groups. Many hotels will put together a package that includes stay, breakfast, packed lunches, and great dinners. Many even include a day trip or two for the group within the package.

If you know how your family can have a luxury vacation without going out of pocket. Many travel directories like Yahoo bring together the best travel and vacation offers. The World Wide Web has changed the way people perceive the world and offer users a great many advantages.
